Castiel took in a deep breath as he stood like stone on the Winchester's front porch. A million thoughts were racing through his mind but they were almost silent as he heard someone move beyond the door. However the night resulted, Cas knew that this would be the night that would change the rest of his life. He had ventured here without anyone's knowledge with this feeling in his gut that he couldn't get to dissipate.

The door opened revealing a confused and worried Mary Winchester. "Cas? It's two in the morning. Is everything okay? Where's Dean?"

"Everything is fine, Mrs. Winchester. Dean is back at the apartment sleeping. I wanted to talk to you." Cas wrung his hands as he ducked his head and took in another deep breath to calm his frizzling nerves. "It's important and I couldn't wait."

Mary nodded as she opened the door to her son's boyfriend. "Come in. I'll make some coffee."

Castiel walked into the Winchester home and immediately felt a little lighter. He was really going to do this. He was going to sit down at the kitchen table and do it before he chickened out and another few years passed by. As he took a seat, he watched as Mary maneuvered through the kitchen to get the coffee pot ready.

"So, Cas, what is so important you must come over at two in the morning?" Mary set the pot on and took a seat across from him, a mother's worry etched into her eyes.

"I-" Castiel took a deep breath but willed himself to stare into her eyes as he asked it. "I would like to ask for your blessing to marry Dean."

Silence fell on them. Their eyes seemed to sink into each other's as the moments passed. Castiel grew afraid that he would be refused, that Mary didn't approve. And then something happened. Her eyes slowly glossed over and a warm tint filled her cheeks. Just as a tear slipped down her cheek she reached across the table and took his hand in hers.

"I couldn't imagine another husband for my son." Mary placed her free hand over her mouth to hide her lips drawing up as more tears overflowed. "My baby is getting married."

Castiel grinned through foggy tears of his own and grasped her hand firmly. "I haven't asked him yet. I wanted to ask for your blessing first. I have the ring. I'd actually had it for a couple months now."

"I can't believe this." Mary closed her eyes and lowered her shaking hand to reveal a serene smile. "I never thought that I'd live to see the day that my son would find someone to marry him. I know that he always used to be so opposed to the idea. He used to tell me that he would never settle down. Then he brought you home and... and everything was different." She sniffled as she opened her eyes back and met Cas' with an intensity that had his gut warm. "You are the best thing that ever happened to my son. I used to tell him that angels were watching over him... and now I know that it is true."

Castiel bit the insides of his cheeks as more tears spilled over. "Mrs. Winchester-"

"Call me mom." Mary stood from the table and came around to yank Cas up into her arms. "I love you, Castiel."

"I love you, too... mom."
