Castiel Novak’s was defined by shades of black and white. The skies were white on good days and a numbing sense of gray on the not so good days. The ground was a darker shade of black that almost felt like he was walking into the pits of hell. For eighteen years he had spent deciding on what the world would look like without its dull luster of infinite gray. His brother explained that the world was so colorful that it had taken his breath away when he first found his soul mate. His sister told him that it made her heart swell so quickly she thought she would have a heart attack.

All of his friends had found their soul mates. All of them lived in blissful color. Their eyes mirrored the beauty that Castiel couldn’t find. A month ago he was a hopeless romantic, praying every Sunday to find his sight and love. Today he couldn’t find the energy to pray anymore. His uncle had never found a soul mate, he had lived in black and white his entire life. Many people believed his died before they could meet. That is what Castiel believed happened to his soul mate.

It was raining as he stepped out onto his porch. Light droplets of grey mush fell against the blackened ground. Slivers of light shadowed over the sky where the listless clouds would be parted. If he could ever find his soul mate, he thinks that the sun would be the first thing he would look at. Casting the thought away, Castiel climbed down his steps and started down the broken sidewalk with his head ducked. In his mind he counted the steps he was taking. It was a Saturday which meant he was to meet his brother for coffee at the shop just a couple blocks from his home. Coffee used to be fun with his brother, until he found his soul mate and found himself talking about colors endlessly. Castiel couldn’t even fake a smile when his jealousy raged so hard against his brother.

“Look, I don’t know what you are-“

“Dean, shut up, alright? I can-“

“No you can’t, Sammy-“

The voices are getting louder and almost angrier as Castiel tries to just scoot by whatever argument was drug out into the street. Both voices were raised enough to make Castiel step a little farther out of his way and try to stay clear of the testosterone bursting.

“I am not a child-“

“Oh you wanna bet? She isn’t-“

“She is my soul mate-“

“Don’t say that. She is awful-“

“Fuck you!”

“Fuck you!”

Just as the last insult was thrown Castiel dared to raise his eyes. Two taller men were glaring at each other with such venom in made Castiel shiver. They were standing inches from each other on the sidewalk smack dab in the middle of the sidewalk he needed to get through. His feet stopped him as he watched the two with hopes that they would resolve this and leave soon.

The taller one just shook his head slightly. “Whether you like it or not, she is my soul mate.” His voice had died down and that relieved the tension building in Castiel’s shoulders.

“Ruby is a bitch.” The shorter one rolled his eyes. “There is no way in hell I am letting her get near you.”

“That’s too bad, Dean. Cause I can finally see everything now. She makes me happy. If you cant be happy for me, then leave me alone.”

“Sammy-“

“Don’t, Dean.”

Castiel bit his tongue and knew that whatever the situation was it wasn’t going to be defused any time soon. He decided to just step out onto the road and walk around the two. It was already ten minutes past the time he was supposed to meet his brother and he knew Gabriel would worry. Without checking oncoming traffic, Castiel stepped out onto the road and took a few steps before he heard it. A horn. The next thing he could process was a splitting pain in his hips and asphalt on his cheek. Metallic exploded in his mouth and for a moment he froze because he couldn’t quite grasp a breath. Everything was numb, only a slight aching throb beat in his bones.

“HOLY SHIT!” A rough voice screamed before warm hands were pressing against Cas’ shoulders. “Holy shit. Holy shit. Are you okay? Jesus Christ, SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE!” The rough voice was familiar, but Castiel couldn’t quite place it as he felt another ache pound in his skull.

“Gabriel.” Cas managed to choke out through his rasped throat. “Meeting Gabriel… coffee shop.”

“I don’t think you should be trying to talk, man.” The voice was a little closer now. “But I think you should maybe open your eyes.”

“What?” But Cas opened his eyes just the same and saw the purest shade of green he had ever dreamed about in his life. Green eyes peered down at him and mirrored the wonder that was now grasping at his mind and pushing the pain from his body. “What?”

The man smirked, his ruby lips curling up at the sides and pinching his tan skin and Castiel had never seen anything more breathtaking before in his life. “You know, I never imagined meeting my soul mate after he got blindsided by a car.”

Castiel tried to smile, but he found he couldn’t concentrate on anything but the deep green that was so pure and vibrate. “Your eyes..”

“Yeah, yours too.” The man smiled softly before his eyes darted up for a moment. “Did anyone call an ambulance yet?! Sammy! We need to get this guy to a hospital! I refuse to lose my soul mate before I even have a chance to talk to him!”

“Castiel.” He managed to rasp it out just as his eyes rose and met the blinding blue splayed across the sky. His eyes tried to train themselves on the sun but it was too painful and he wasn’t ready to lose his sight just as he got it.

“I don’t think praying to an angel is going to do you any good.” The man’s arm wrapped around his shoulder and tried to comfort him.

Castiel broke out in a soft grin. “No, that’s my name. Castiel Novak.”

“Right. Sorry.” The man grinned down at him and Castiel couldn’t help but marvel in the dimples that formed into his rosy cheeks. “Dean Winchester.”

“Nice to meet you, Dean.” Castiel coughed a bit and winced at a searing pain in his abdomen. “I think I might have a broken rib.”

“Damn it.” Dean almost glared as he turned his face again and started to shout profanities at the people who were crowding around them. “Jesus Christ, you bloodsuckers! Back the fuck up and stop gawking at him! Give us some room for the love of God!”

“It’s okay, Dean.” Castiel managed to raise his hand and grip tightly to Dean’s leather jacket. “You don’t have to-“

Dean’s eyes came back and glued down into Castiel’s. “Someone has to before they are close enough to breathe on us. Let me take care of you, okay?”

“Okay.” Castiel wanted to close his eyes, but he couldn’t pass on the green that he never wanted to look away from. During his entire life he had wanted to see the leaves, the ocean, the sun, and all the other poetic things people talked about being beautiful. But right now, all he wanted was to keep staring into those eyes and never allow himself to forget that color.

Sirens were faint but they started to get achingly loud. Dean smiled with relief as he gripped tighter to Castiel’s shoulder and tried to adjust them in a way to easily lift his body. “I am going to go to the hospital with you, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Then after I promise to take you out on a date.” Dean winked as he flashed Castiel a brilliant smile and bent over to place his lips gently against his forehead. “You are my soul mate after all.”

“I am going to send God a fine wine for making my soul mate so attractive and sweet.”

Dean snorted and shook his head lightly. “Aren’t you smooth?”

“Dean!” The other man, Castiel presumed was Sammy, was by their side now. “The ambulance is here. You want me to drive the impala to the hospital?”

“Yeah, I’m going to go with Cas.”

“Cas?”

“Castiel is a mouthful.” Dean smiled again, this time a little more playful, before staring down into Cas’ eyes again. “So blue.”

“So green.”
