Dean hated clichés, hated the way that people would melt so nauseatingly over cliché confessions of love. So when he thinks back to the moment he finally proclaimed his love, he flushes until his face hurts from the heat and hides himself away before he can possibly embarrass himself any further. It wasn't until he saw the spark in Cas' eyes when they told the story to people that the cliché seemed to be second, what was the most important was the way that Cas melted over the story. That was all that had ever mattered and would ever matter.
"We were waiting outside the airport for Sam to come pick us up." Cas' voice raised and fell with a flood of emotion that made Dean's heart flutter. "I was exhausted from the plane trip but even more from visiting my parents." A few chuckles rang out through the party which only made Cas and continue with more excitement. "We were discussing what color to paint the kitchen, since Dean always hated that floral pattern."
"It's Martha Stewart-y, babe." Dean rolled his eyes but smirked at the light elbow that dug into his rib cage.
"Anyway, we were discussing this and it started to rain. I was horrified because I didn't want to get soaked, I was already miserable enough. Then my valiant knight in shining armor took of his leather jacket and threw it over me. He wrapped it up around me and I couldn't see anything. All I could was laugh at how childish he was." Cas shot Dean a warm smile. "So, Dean leads me and we run under to the side of the building for cover. It's pouring at this point, we are huddled up and trying to make sure out luggage isn't getting too wet.
"It was magical." Cas grinned as his eyes seemed to go somewhere in his mind. "The smell, the sound, the rain that broke us off from the rest of the world. I looked up at Dean and found him staring at me. I knew then and there that something was happening. It was pure love and adoration in his eyes and it made me weak. That was when he ducked his head and handed me the ring."
"I think I remember that you gasped like all those girls do in those romance movies." Dean snorted as Cas punched him and scowled playfully. A few more snickers and 'awe's rang out around them, but suddenly their eyes locked. "It was the cutest little gasp, babe."
A smile spread across Cas' face. "You told me that I was everything you ever wanted. You said that when I was with you you were in heaven and I was your angel. And then you got down on one knee, slipped the golden back on my finger, and asked. I will never forget the tears in your eyes, or the water running down you face. All that I could see was you, and that was why I said 'yes'."
The entire room went silent as Dean swallowed harshly. Cas was staring at him just as he had that night. The night Dean finally got up the courage to pull out the ring he had carried around for months. He asked him then because it just came so natural, the way Cas was pressed against him in the pouring rain... It was a moment that turned Dean's entire room upside down.
"I love you." Cas whispered before he leaned forward and pressed their lips together.
"I love you, too, babe." Dean grinned into the kiss and deepened it.
"Okay, get a room, love birds!" Sam called from somewhere in the crowd as people started to mingle again.
The story was over, but it echoed in everyone's minds. They went about the party but all of them found themselves smiling when they would catch a glance of Dean with his arm around Cas, or Dean saying something to make Cas laugh, or the way that no matter where they were in the room they could always find each other's eyes. Everyone who witnessed the story found themselves longing for the love and the stories that Dean and Cas had.
