The game had ended with a ruthless defeat that left Castiel feeling the sting of tears in his eyes. Although he was mostly benched during the game, losing was still something he was learning to come to terms with. The only reason he joined the football team in the first place was because his brother wanted him to meet new people and come out of his shell. What neither one of them expected was for Cas to fall for the first string quarterback, Dean Winchester.
Castiel shrugged off his shoulder pads in the locker room and waited on the bench until the majority of the team was out of the shower and heading home. Showering in front of other men still weirded Cas out and he wasn't comfortable being naked in a shower with other people. As the commotion died down, Cas stripped quickly and wrapped a dry towel around his waist.
"Hey, Novak, good game. Maybe next time we will get 'em." One of the other benchwarmers patted Cas casually on the shoulder before grabbing his bag and heading out the door.
Cas didn't say anything as he made his way into the showers. The steam was enough to choke on as he ducked over to an empty shower head away from more of the men. Tossing the towel up over the wall, he twisted the hot water handle and felt the warm spray of heat massage into his sore muscles. As he kneaded his soon soapy fingers into his dirty skin, he could hear the laughter and jokes from the popular football guys.
When he turned off the water and wrapped the towel around his waist again, Cas made his way toward his locker with his eyes down. A handful of the players were still in the showers or changing. This was Cas' least favorite part of the entire football season, the moments in the locker room when he had to avert his eyes from everyone. Especially Dean. It felt wrong if he took advantage of the locker room to check out Dean, like he was a peeping tom or something.
Cas made it back to his bag and quickly rifled through it for his plain blue tshirt and slightly faded jeans. But he paused as he held his clothing in his hands when he realized he wasn't alone in this brief hall of lockers. His eyes nervously flicked up to see the toned back of a guy with his own towel around his waist. This was new for Cas, because mostly no one changed in this hall and that is why he always did. His cheeks reddened almost painfully as the man turned around and Cas was met with Dean Winchester's piercing green eyes.
Dean smiled at Cas casually as he unzipped his own bag and fumbled around for his clothes. "You are Novak, right? Linebacker?"
"It's Castiel, and yeah. When coach puts me in that is usually where I am." Cas couldn't move a muscle as Dean flexed his plump flushed arms in search for something in his bag.
Dean snorted with a nod. "You just seem kind of small to be in that position."
Cas almost didn't hear what he said as his eyes trailed along Dean's chest and marveled at the beautiful curves that seemed to be chiseled by God himself. More laughter rang out from somewhere in the locker room and it reminded Cas that they weren't along. If only he could force his eyes to leave Dean's chest, the same chest that was causing a painful thudding in his ears and a sour lump in his throat.
Dean raised his eyes and peered up under still dripping bangs. When his green eyes caught Cas', a playful smirk came across his face. "You see something you like?"
Cas choked on his spit and flushed all over his body as he turned on his heel and grabbed at his bag. Maybe Dean had meant it as a joke, but Castiel's whole body tensed and his mind went numb. No one knew he was gay, and he definitely didn't want the football team to know he was. All he needed was to get beaten up and shunned away from the locker room. So, Cas held his clothes tightly to his chest and almost sprinted into a toilet stall to change without eyes on him.
In the stall, he changed slowly, making sure not to shake anymore. Breathing was painful every time he saw Dean's smirk in his mind and the way his whole body flexed with each subtle movement. Maybe Dean had meant something else, but no part of Cas' mind was able to rationalize the complete fool he had made of himself when he fled. He couldn't face Dean ever again, let alone see him in the locker room.
When Cas was fully clothed, he took a deep breath and stared at the door. Maybe he could wait a few more moments until the laughter died down and everyone left. He shifted his weight and clung to the towel and bag in his hand. As the minutes ticked by, the locker room was completely silent. Cas let out a relieved breath and walked out from the stall toward his locker to dispose the bag and towel.
Cas opened his locker slowly, in no rush, and stuck his things in it. Maybe next practice he could approach Dean and make up some lie like he felt sick or that he might have vomited and that was why he ran. Maybe Cas could just pretend like this all never happened.
"Thought everyone was gone?" Dean's low voice thundered from behind Cas.
Cas' heart almost imploded as he jumped off of the ground and spun around to see Dean leaning against a few lockers a few feet away. He was fully dressed, but still Cas could see the bronzed skin underneath of the clothing and it made his neck warm. Their eyes locked for a few moments as Cas gulped air and tried to quiet his thudding chest.
"Didn't mean to scare you so badly." Dean pushed off the locker and ran his hand through his hair. "Usually the guys go for some burgers after a game, I wanted to know if you would like to go with me."
Cas' eyes widened as he cleared his throat. "Go out for burgers? With you? After-"
"Dude, don't play coy. I know you check me out in the locker room all the time. Earlier I just wanted to prove it to myself by going closer to you." A small warm smile appeared on his face that sent Cas reeling. "When I asked you if you saw something you liked, I thought you were going to have a heart attack."
"I did." Cas murmured and couldn't hide a small trace of a smile. "Have a heart attack. I thought you were toying with me... maybe to beat me up later for checking you out."
Dean snorted and took another step closer to Cas. "You are oblivious aren't you?"
"What?" Cas' voice squeaked as Dean stepped closer until their noses almost touched.
"I have been checking you out for weeks." Dean smirked seductively and brought his chin up to brush their lips together.
Cas moaned at the sensation of chapped lips and selfishly smashed their lips together before Dean could pull away. A hot wet mess of a kiss ensued until both of them were breathless and intoxicated from the taste of each other. All Cas could think about was that this was a dream, but as they stayed close to each other and breathed in the other's breath, it was all so real that it made his heart race.
"How about those burgers? Just me and you." Dean trailed his index finger along Cas' jawline longingly.
Cas nodded, unable to verbalize anything. His eyes stared into Dean's and he felt found. This immense feeling of warmth and comfort washed over him until he almost felt like his body would puddle at Dean's feet.
