WARNING: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH

'

A man is many things. Let's count them all tonight

You're letting go of strings, replacing them with light.
But they want the hit about the teenage take on pain
There's nothing catchy 'bout the life of a saint
but I've got this song in my head
'cause it's breaking me down to tears...

To humans heaven was the great unknown, but to angels it was humanity that was the greatest mystery. Castiel stood on the edge of the park. The eyes of his vessel watched like a statue as young kids laughed and played as if the world was a fantastic melody. Castiel knew the truth, he knew of the world beyond the laughter that housed monsters and demons. He knew that falling from Grace was what damned him the greatest. He was the monster that he had tried so desperately to stop. Duty and honor were lost. He had nothing left but the guilt of his actions and a lifetime to pay for what he had done to those he loved.

If I scream, scream, scream
about a good man's life
would you ever stop and listen?
Would you open up your eyes?
Would you scream with me?
Sing it sad and sweet
Say goodnight, goodbye, love
In the morning, you will see...

His feet moved him from the park. The laughter faded as he trudged past the gate of the place he swore he would visit every day for the rest of his mortal life. It was a reminder of the man he hadn't saved. A constant reminder that a good man was dead, and he was still breathing. All the other headstones were foggy and useless. Under them were the bodies of men and women Castiel didn't know. They were just marks of long forgotten hopes. Only one headstone was worth the misery and the pain.

"Hello, Dean." The voice left Cas' lips and for a moment he wondered if he had spoken it. His memory flooded back to him when he would greet did in the same manner and he would always receive a smile. The smile that had made Cas warm inhumanly. The smile that shattered his world and made him fall from his home and everything he knew. The smile that was forever lost because he wasn't strong enough to save it.

Photos keep you close with increments of light.
The quiet wooden posts, the county's cold tonight.
But they want the hit about the teenage take on pain
There's nothing catchy 'bout the life of a saint
but I've got this song in my head
'cause it's breaking me down to tears...

Castiel stared down at the name etched into the stone. He wanted to reach down and run his fingers along the hero's name. He wanted nothing more than to have Dean standing there beside him. He wanted Dean to catch the tears falling from his face and tell him everything would be okay. Humanity was empty without Dean. It was a pale prison that constrained and choked. Every day he was reminded of the man that would never smile again. Sam had given him photos, the last they spoke was months ago, but they weren't the same. They were flat and silent. Dean's smiles in those photos were like daggers to Cas' heart. He would trace his finger along the colors that blended on paper to create Dean's face. But the photo was cold and worn. It was a reminder that Dean was gone. That Dean wasn't coming back.

"I'm sorry, Dean." The words floated over the gravestone. "I'm sorry that I couldn't save you."

I'd rip my eyes out for you.
You're screaming at the cold.
I pull you close - you're asking why
it's so cold tonight. I don't know why...

"You were always the hero, Dean, the angel. I was never good enough, but you were. It should be you standing here now. It should be me that is buried deep into the ground." A choked sob shook Cas' shoulders as he hunched down and kept his eyes on the stone even as painful as it was. "Are you at peace, Dean? Are you finally happy?"

Would it make you cry?
Would you finally see that
all your lives are moments?
All your words and closeness
keep you here and human
whispering tonight...
And so we scream (all your lives are moments)
the sadness sweetly for him (all your words and closeness)
while the stand and stare (keep you here and human)
Do you think they'll ever care?
I don't care. I don't care.

Cas straightened his back and wiped the tears that marked his face. The wind blew just enough to cool over his face and make him shiver. Staring down at the stone, Cas felt the air being sucked from him. The weight of the world hung on his very shoulders yet he felt weightless. Taking a step back, Cas somberly waved to the gravestone and turned his back to it.

"I love you, Dean."

The fallen angel took his leave from the cemetery as he had every day since the moment Dean was in the ground, and he would do until his last day on earth.

Sing it sad and sweet
Say goodnight, goodbye, love
In the morning, you will see...
