Prompt from insanity-run-wild: au where dean is very pent up about everything that's been going on and cas can see something is wrong and he finally asks and dean just breaks at the seam
'
The can clenched in Dean’s hand began to whine as it twisted inward sharply and sliced a small nip into his palm. Castiel stood at the far end of the motel and watched the hunter with silent eyes. Dean let out a ragged sigh and pitched the can off to the side without a worry as to where it would end up. Moments ago the phone had been hung up leaving a younger brother to scream in rage miles away. The older hunter needed to be alone. He needed to sit without the worrying eyes of his brother. The world was crashing down and nothing seemed to stop the aching emptiness in Dean’s soul.
Ghosts and demons come and go, but the ache that was left in Dean’s heart did not pass. It has been years of travelling and being alone that weighed down on his mind. The only thing that kept him going is the knowledge that the world would break without him. He had to stay strong and protect the innocence that the world still cherished so dearly. Dean couldn’t ever give in because he had to be the strong warrior humanity deserved. If he snapped, or showed weakness, then he would let everyone down. Strength was the only option.
But now, alone in a darkened cruddy motel room, Dean let a few tears finally come to the surface. If no one saw it, then maybe it would be okay. His father had taught him to never show weakness, that it was a sign of failure. And it there was one thing in this world that Dean wasn’t, it was a failure. All those years as a mindless servant to his father had hardened him to the point of almost destruction.
Castiel stood over the hunter as the guardian that he needed, but didn’t want to admit to needing. It was Cas who pulled Dean from his burden in hell, it was Cas who shoved Dean on in his battles, and it would be Cas who would go to the hunter in this dark hour of despair. Because Cas would hold Dean higher than all of humanity, even though Dean deemed himself as low as scum.
“I wish it would all go away.” Dean spoke hoarsely into the room he thought was empty. No matter the rest of the world tonight, Dean was ready to let himself slip into the depression that was always eating him just below the surface. The same depression that pushed him to sacrifice himself for every cause that was worthy enough. The same depression that had driven him to start to hate himself and everything he stood for.
Castiel took a step forward, but was still unnoticed by the hunter. The angel’s once unbeating heart started to break at the words his hero had spoken. Tears that Castiel didn’t understand came to the surface in a vessel that was just now starting to come to life. Misery was something Castiel didn’t understand but that he started to feel in this moment.
“Dean.”
The hunter’s shoulders shook as green eyes lifted to meet blue. They both lost their breath as they stared into the other’s watery eyes. The world was lost to them. A profound sadness gripped the room as both men realized the weight in each other’s hearts.
“What are you doing here, Cas?” Dean’s voice wasn’t as light as it usually was.
“I came because I felt your… your heart breaking.” Castiel came forward and sat on the edge of the bed a few feet away from the man who held the world. “I came because I couldn’t let you drown alone.”
“Funny, Cas.” Dean snorted bitterly. “I am always drowning and I am always alone.”
Cas let his eyes hover over the can that was now mangled on the floor. “How much have you had to drink?”
“What’s it matter? My liver giving out is the least of my worries.” Dean gritted his teeth and watched the face of his fallen angel. “Will you leave me alone?”
