Castiel’s slow climb back into reality came slowly this particular morning. He could still feel the strains of a dream trying to play out in his mind as he lifted his head slightly. Most mornings Cas woke up feeling groggy and a little grouchy. Since becoming human, waking up from a dream became the most dreaded part of his daily routine.

Then he heard it and his ears twitched. A low snore that came was so loud Castiel soon realized it was right above him. As he became more aware of his surroundings, he realized that it was skin his face had been lying on. Last night came back to him in a heaping wave. Dean. Dean had called him into his room after a night of watching TV. And then… Castiel felt his face redden and his body tense. They had kissed… they had done more things than Cas could process so early in the morning. His mind raced when he remembered back to the way Dean treated women after they spent a night in his bed. Castiel didn’t want to be another discarded part of Dean’s life.

Cas tried to move his leg but it was tangled in warm skin. His stomach was pressed into Dean’s hip causing an almost uncomfortable predicament. A pounding pain ached in his chest when he remembered the feel of Dean’s rough lips against his. All Cas wanted was more, but he didn’t want to lose Dean. He knew how Dean acted when things got emotional and it frightened him that he would be ignored or the night would be pushed under the rug.

Dean stirred a little as Cas tried to slide himself off of him. A warm hand pressed against Cas’ lower back causing his breath to hitch.

“Cas?” Dean slurred sleepily and pulled Cas up against him until Cas’ head was tucked under his chin snuggly.

Cas nuzzled his head in and treasured the warmth between them, but was still too scared that Dean would soon come back to reality and kick him out.

“Caaaas?” Dean murmured a little louder and trailed his fingers along Cas’ spine, pressing every so often to get a warm sigh from Cas.

“Dean.” Cas’ voice was rough like it was every morning, but the usual grouchiness wasn’t behind it.

Dean’s lips pressed against Cas’ bed head. “Mornin’.”

“Good morning.”

“How did you sleep?” Dean’s voice was still low and drawn out. His breathing was warm and every time his chest lifted Cas felt his heart beat against his own.

“Very well.” Castiel tilted his head up and peered under his bangs to see Dean’s peaceful resting face.

Dean’s eyes were still closed, but Cas could see the small trace of a smile along his lips. He couldn’t deny the genuine beauty of Dean in the morning. When he was almost blissful and ignorant to all the pain he had suffered throughout his life. When Cas was still an angel, and watched Dean vigilantly, he would always come in the morning just when Dean was coming back to the world. It was the only time Cas thought he could see a happy Dean and it made his heart swell.

“I should go make some coffee.” Cas spoke robotically as he began to pull away.

But Dean’s arms wound around his lower back and pressed him down against Dean until Cas thought he was going to break his bones. “No. Don’t go.” Dean grinned as his eyes finally peeled up and stared into the infinite eyes of Cas. “Stay here.”

Castiel felt his whole body still as he looked into the eyes of the man he loved. It wasn’t a secret to anyone the way Cas felt toward Dean, except maybe Dean. But as he looked into those warm eyes, he finally saw the warm look that he had waited for all these years. He looked at Cas like there was nothing else in the world. Like he was all he had. And it took Cas’ breath away.
