Cas lifted his left eyelid and dared a glance at the clock. The glowing red lights told him it was just after two in the morning, which meant his husband should have been done with his shift hours ago. He understood that work at the hospital was tough and many times Dean had to stay after to help when an emergency came about. But that didn't mean Cas didn't worry, or that he didn't fear Dean was off somewhere with a lover.

They had been together for seven years, married three of those. Routine was inevitable but Cas feared that his husband would bore of it. Before they were together Dean was a bachelor, he stayed out late and partied like it was his last day on earth. It wasn't until Cas managed to ask Dean to a date that the partying stopped. Almost abruptly, if Cas thought enough about it. Dean said that no matter his history of one night stands, when he was with someone he was with them and no one else.

That didn't mean Cas didn't fear the worst. He had been cheated on by plenty of exes. He had dated types like Dean and always gotten hurt in the end. Which should make him anxious. Dean was goodlooking, suave, and he could have any person he set his eyes on. Why would he settle down with a boring writer like himself? Why would he trade in the glamorous life for simple dates at home and nights filled with crochet and television? Sure they went out, they had fun, but Cas never felt it was enough for his husband.

Three years. Three years the golden band had been around his finger. When he took it off there was always a tan line that reminded him that no matter what he was Dean's. He just wished he knew if Dean was his.

A thudding of a slammed door jolted Cas from his thoughts as he rolled onto his side with his back to the door. They had built a life together, but what if one day Dean decided that he wanted to let it crumble? What if this was all too good and any moment it was destined to turn sour?

Cas heard their bedroom door creak open softly. There was shuffling of clothes behind him and a light sigh that was coated in exhaustion. The bed dipped, causing him to scoot just slightly, and then a warm firm body was pressed tightly to his back. It wasn't until chilled toes touched his shins that he sucked in a breath and knew that Dean knew he was awake.

"Jesus, Dean, your toes are frigid."

His husband chuckled before rubbing his peach fuzz against Cas' cheek softly. "Good morning to you, too."

"How was work?" Cas asked as he felt an arm loop over his waist and grab onto his hand. Their fingers intertwined like it was as basic as breathing.

Dean huffed a breath and buried his face between Cas' shoulder blades. "Horrible." He muttered barely audible. "I don't know why I let my brother talk me into medical school."

"Because you are smart and you love to help people." Cas reminded him, like he did every so often, as he pulled Dean's hand up to his face and pressed promising kisses along his knuckles. "Also, the money."

"Knew you were only into me for my money." Dean snorted softly, his breathing already heavier from exhaustion. "How was your work?"

"I finished another couple chapters. My publisher wants a rough rough draft by the end of the month."

Dean let out a soft hum and snuggled closer, letting their bodies melt until their breathing was synced. "Bet you'll become so famous that you'll leave me for some young hot stud."

"I'd never leave you, Dean." Cas started to become a little more awake as his voice became commanding. "You know I never would do such a thing. I love you. You're the only one."

"Calm down, babe, I was just kidding around. I love you, too. Never let you go." Dean tightened his hold on Cas' waist. "Never, ever. Love you so much it hurts me sometimes. I think of life before you and it was a fucking nightmare. I'd never go back to that again. My little angel."

"Dean." Cas scoffed at the nickname but couldn't help but smile at his husband's words. When he was alone, it was easy to think that Dean would leave him. It was easy to conjure scenarios of Dean divorcing him and leaving him with a cold empty bed. But now, when Dean held him like he was the only thing worth holding, Cas knew that Dean wasn't going anywhere. And that made all the difference.

"'M tired, babe, let's get some sleep. Got the day off tomorrow so I figured we could go out to that new yarn place you were raving about. Of course after we'll go to the movies or something. Just you and me and no work bullshit."

"I'd like that." Cas grinned with tears welling in the back of his throat. He clung onto Dean's hand and shifted back until he felt the warm familiar puffs of air against his neck and ear.

"I love you." Dean whispered as his lips grazed Cas' skin leaving goose bumps in their wake.

"I love you, too. Forever." Before he shut his eyes, he turned and pecked his husband's smiling lips once. Then he turned back and let himself melt into Dean's embrace. "Goodnight."

"'Night."
