Prompt from anon: ok so on a serious kinda AU where they're both at school when a shooting happens. Like there's dean, benny, Charlie, Castiel, and whomever you like in a room.
WARNING MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH
'
Dean felt his hand protectively clasp tightly over Cas’ thigh. When the gun shot had rung out during their fourth period class, Dean’s first instinct had been to grab Cas and push them both under the table that wasn’t visible from the window in the door. Now, Dean pressed Cas into his back and made sure that he was safe. They weren’t even dating yet, they had gone on one date and it didn’t even go that well. But when the thought of a gunman entering this room played through Dean’s mind, his first thought was keeping Cas safe from that maniac.
“Dean-“ Cas’ voice wavered and Dean could imagine the tears running down his face.
“Shh. I got you.” Dean’s voice was low but stern. He glanced over to see some of his friends under a table toward the back of the room. Benny had his arms wrapped around Charlie protectively. Dean could see the fear in their eyes and it made his blood pound.
A hand gripped at the back of his shirt and tugged lightly. Dean shifted on his knees and turned his head to see watery blue eyes staring at him in terror. Without thinking, Dean brought his free hand up and slowly started to wipe the tears away. It tore him up inside to see his friends like this.
“You’re gonna be okay. I won’t let anything happen to you.” Dean leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to Cas’ cheek. “Stay calm for me, Cas.”
The blue eyed boy nodded robotically and sniffled. “Okay, Dean.”
Dean heard a gentle knock on the door. He froze and grasped onto Cas with everything he had. A couple sighs were heard in the classroom. Luckily, their teacher had locked the door and maybe the gunman would just walk away.
“Dean-“
“It’s okay.”
Their voices couldn’t be heard by anyone but them. It even seemed like the words were never spoken. But Cas buried his face in Dean’s chest and stifled his sobs. Dean wrapped his arms around his friend’s shoulders and held him. No matter what happened, Dean would not let anyone in this room die. It was a sullen vow that might get him killed, but he would risk it.
After what felt like hours after the knock, Dean started to loosen a little. Maybe the gunman had left. But as if from a nightmare, the door cracked with a thundering roar that sent everyone jumping and scurrying as far back from the intruder as possible. Dean felt his heart thudding in his throat and an unbelievable tension take hold of his entire body. He forgot how to breathe as he heard the steps of rubbed boots enter the room.
“Come out, come out, wherever you are.” A low rough female voice interrupted the room. Dean recognized it instantly. It was Meg, a student who he had been in World Studies with last year.
Dean didn’t think, he acted. Drawing back from Castiel, Dean gave him a final kiss on the lips. It was sweet but forced and tasted like salt. When his head pulled back, he grabbed Cas’ wrists and drew them away from him. Castiel stared with terror and completely paled as he searched frantically through Dean’s eyes.
“Maybe, in another life, I wouldn’t gotten the chance to love you.” Dean whispered through a choke as he pushed Cas back and climbed out from under the table. He didn’t know if it was the last time he would see Cas, but all he could see in his mind was those two beating blue eyes that used to make his heart flutter.
“A sacrifice?” Meg’s voice snickered behind Dean.
Dean calmly turned and faced the student with the gun. Their eyes met, and Dean saw nothing but cruelty. The gun was held out in her hand and pointed directly at his chest. All Dean could think was Cas, Benny, and Charlie were here and he wouldn’t let them get hurt. If it meant his death, then so be it.
“What are you doing, Meg?” Dean didn’t let his eyes leave Meg’s. He felt cold, and oddly enough giddy.
Meg smirked at him and shrugged. The gun lifted and fell and with every jerk Dean let out a choked sigh. “You all think you are so special. Like high school is some big deal. Well let me tell you, you are nothing. You are all the scum of the earth. And when I wipe you out, paradise awaits me.”
Dean wanted to call her crazy, but he knew it would only aggravate her. If he could just get her to leave this room, then maybe everything would be okay. In the back of his mind he could see Castiel curled up under the table and it sent his heart racing.
“Please, Meg-“
“Begging? You, Winchester? Mr. Football Star?” Meg threw back her head and let out a sickening laugh before looking back into Dean’s eyes with a new ferocity that sent the world spinning. “I will not spare you. I will not spare any of you.”
“It isn’t worth it.” Dean whispered as his eyes softly fell to the small hole in the gun that held his fate. “Killing us, it isn’t going to bring you any satisfaction.”
“I have killed three already. Every single one was better than the last.” Her voice dropped deep as her hand raised and the gun became aimed right at Dean’s head. “And you, my dear, will be glorious.”
'
Castiel crumbled under the table as he stared at the back of Dean’s boots. A fit of sobs was backed up in his throat as he clung to desperation not to cry out. But when Dean had left him there, he felt the entire world stop. Dean had taken Cas on one date, and now the man was promising to try and stop a madman from killing him. Cas’ mind swam as he felt the brink of insanity clasp at his mind.
“And you, my dear, will be glorious.” Meg’s words echoed in Cas’ mind as a sickening ache formed in his head.
A gun shot rang out. Nothing special about it. Cas was numb. Nothing seemed to come to his mind as he watched the man in front of him fall to his knees. Slow motion. Screams from students to Cas’ left and right. But nothing seemed to enter into his mind. tears rose in him without him knowing it. The body of his protector fell face first onto the ground. Empty.
Cas felt his chest heave. He felt the way his eyes burned and his vision fogged. But his eyes wouldn’t leave the back of the body splayed out only a few feet away from him. Dean. The same Dean who brought him roses for their date. The same Dean who jokingly pinched at Cas’ side to get a smile out of him. The same Dean who crawled out from here to save him.
Blackness enveloped Cas as he heard more shots echoing in the distance.
'
Castiel stood there alone. He stared at the cold unwavering gravestone and felt nothing. His eyes trailed along the words chiseled into the stone. Dean Winchester. The same Dean who had given his life for Cas. If he could go back to that day, he would never have let Dean go. Cas would’ve held onto Dean even if Meg found them. He should be in that grave alongside Dean. The same Dean that made Cas smile.
“In another life, we would be together.” Cas’ voice was broken, just as he was. “Because I love you, Dean. And I will never forget you. I promise…” Sobs choked at his words as the tears flooded his vision. “I promise that I will be okay.”
A warm summer breeze lightly brushed past his face and warmed the tears. Gun shots echoed in Cas’ mind as he knelt down over the soil that covered Dean. The same Dean that had told Cas that life was worth living. The same Dean who promised him a second date.
“I will wait, for that date.” Cas raised his shaking hand and lightly traced over the name etched in stone. “Forever, if I have to.”
