“You’re fucking kidding me, right?” Dean snapped as he stared down at the small child sitting comfortably in a heap of the trench coat. The boy peered up through messy darkened hair with blue eyes that seemed so innocent and fragile. Moments ago this boy was an angel.
“Don’t swear around the kid.” Sam scolded as he bent down and reached his finger out toward child Cas. “I bet it was the witches.”
The moment Sam’s finger touched Cas’ shoulder the boy began to wail and flail his arms in anger and pain. Sam instantly coiled back as the boy shot up and clumsily ran with open arms toward Dean. The hunters watched with dropped jaws as Cas collided with Dean’s limbs and clung his arms around Dean’s knees. The boy was still sobbing lightly as Dean crouched down a bit and gathered up the boy in the humungous trenchcoat and curled him up against his chest. Cas nestled his head against Dean’s neck and wedged himself comfortably under Dean’s arm. The crying stopped almost immediately.
“You’re saying a witch made Cas into a little kid?” Dean couldn’t keep his eyes off of the little angel’s face as his eyes fluttered closed and a thumb popped in his mouth. “Why?”
“What I want to know is why he freaked out when I touched him, and then he ran like mad to you.” Sam scrunched up his face a little offended. “It’s just rude.”
Cas shifted in Dean’s arms and wrapped his free arm up around Dean’s neck and cuddle closer. Dean couldn’t deny that he melted under this kid’s touch. “I don’t know. Let’s get to some research and see what we can find about people just randomly turning into kids.”
Cas peeled open his eyes and looked up at Dean before pulling his thumb from his mouth. “I want to play.”
“Buddy, we need to get you back to your old self.” Dean cooed despite himself and ran a finger through Cas’ hair gently. “Don’t you want to be grown up?”
“No.” The boy snapped and dug his head against Dean’s neck. “I want to play. Play with me.”
“Well, I will get to research.” Sam grinned and winked at Dean. “You go ahead and keep kid Cas occupied.”
Dean glared after Sam for leaving him with a child, but he was soon melting as he felt Cas grow restless. Setting the kid down, Dean felt little fingers grip his hand and start to drag him clumsily out the door. Dean watched Cas’ little body stumble in the trenchcoat but make no effort to take it off. He had to admit, the kid was pretty adorable. His face was just like Cas’, only smaller and more fragile. A smirk ran across his mouth with the image of this little guy being the one who said ‘I gripped you tight and raised you from perdition’.
“Dean, play with me.” Cas whined as he let go of Dean’s hand and began to run with his arms out into the sky.
Dean paused a moment. He was never good with kids, he was current that his parenting toward Sam had made him as screwed up as his is today. But the way little Cas turned and smiled so sweetly at him had his heart melting. It was no secret that he always wanted to be a father, but the hunting life left absolutely no room for that nonsense. And even if he only had a few hours with the little rascal that was running around in circles on their lawn, he figured he might as well act like a father.
“Dean!” Cas squealed as his legs gave up from under him and he went face first into the grass.
Dean shot up and sprinted full speed to where Cas was now rolling around in the dirt and clawing at his knee. Bending down, Dean ran a hand through Cas’ hair to soothe him before he pushed away the fabric of the trench coat and saw there was a little scrape on the boy’s knee where the pants fabric had split. That was when something triggered in Dean’s mind. Cas was wearing little boy clothes, but his trench coat was the same annoying size as it has always been.
