Dean knew absolutely nothing about flowers. He knew that there were pretty ones, ones that looked like weeds, ones that were way too girly, and ones that you only got for your mother on Mother's Day. So when he found himself standing in a flower shop with the immense urge to get his boyfriend something, he tried his hardest to pick one that he thought Cas would love.
"Can I help you?" A cheery eyed woman asked as she gave him a warm smile.
"Um-yeah." Dean ducked his head and felt the redness seep into his cheeks. "I was-uh-looking for something for my boyfriend. He likes flowers."
"First time?" The disdain Dean had waited for was nowhere in her voice, only polite softness.
Dean nodded with a deep breath as he stuffed his hands into his jean pockets and finally brought his gaze back up to hers. "I just want to get him something special."
The woman nodded with some thought. "How long have you two been together?"
"Six months." The number was always playing in the back of his mind like a pleasant reminder of how lucky he was. "We're pretty serious and I have never really gotten him anything."
"Do you know if he has a favorite flower?"
"I don't."
A pause before the woman disappeared to his left. "I would say an orchid but I think I have something better. I only save it for the special people and I think it would be just the thing to knock his socks off."
"Thank you." Dean turned with a smile as he watched the woman hunt through the display cases. "You don't have to-"
"Yesterday a man came in here saying he needed flowers that would tell his wife 'sorry for sleeping with the babysitting but I still love you'." The woman shook her head. "I tend to deal with things like that. It's a nice change to have someone coming to look for something special for someone they care about."
Dean felt the nerves leave him as he slouched a little with a grin. "How do you know I didn't cheat on him and that's why I am buying the flowers?"
The woman paused with a smirk. "Because I can see it all over your face. When I asked you how long you had been together, your eyes were lit up. You love him. It's not hard to see."
"Oh." Another burst of hotness flushed across his face.
After a few moments of shuffling, the woman appeared back in front of Dean with a flower held delicately in her palm. Her eyes watched his as he sucked in a breath. If there was ever a flower that Dean would think matched the beauty of Castiel, it was this one.
"It's a passion flower. There is a lot of religious background of the flower, but I always imagine it being something beautiful that symbolizes a forever flourishing love. If you give this to him, I think he would like it. Not many people give it to loved ones, and therefore it isn't very cliché." The woman held out the flower with a warm smile. "I hope you two make it."
"Thank you." Dean sucked in a breath as he took the flower gingerly and studied it. "Thank you so much. Ironically my boyfriend is a Religions major in college."
"Then it's perfect."
"It really is."

When Dean gave Cas the flower after their date that night, he didn't know what he expected. In the deepest parts of his mind he thought that maybe Cas would think it was stupid or laugh at it and call Dean a girl. It wasn't until he heard Cas' sharp intake of breath and the way his hands shot up over his mouth, that he knew he made a good decision.
"Dean." Cas spoke in awe as he grabbed for the flower and held it preciously close to his face. "You didn't."
Dean ducked his head and felt a blush creep up his neck. "I did, cause you know you-"
The rest of his words were cut off as he felt the entire weight of his boyfriend crash against his chest and warm lips press hard against his own. They kissed until there was no air left in their lungs and each felt as though they would pass out. Cas pulled back and opened his eyes to meet Dean's gaze.
"I love you." Cas whispered in a breath. They had never spoken those words before. The room fell silent as Cas stared into his eyes and searched for something.
Dean smiled crooked and ducked to peck Cas' lips before wrapping his arms around him and holding him close. "I love you, too."
