Dean Winchester found himself grinning like a hopelessly-happy idiot as he felt his daughter squirm impatiently on his shoulders. Her small feet kicked at his chest enough that he grabbed onto her ankles to keep her from bruising him. It was a big day for the both of them. Mary was going to meet her favorite children's author and Dean was able to see his daughter's unbridled happiness. Ever since the night he realized that one day Mary would be too heavy to sit on his shoulders, he has been finding more ways to capture her youth so that he'd have memories to hold onto when she grew up.
"Dad!" Mary squealed as she tugged on his hair. "The line is so long!"
In was true. Dean couldn't believe the line that weaved through the aisles of the bookstore. If it wasn't for Sam buying the book for Mary's birthday they wouldn't even know who James Novak was. Apparently his book is a big seller with children. The story of a lost bee finding its way back to its family seemed to strike a chord with people.
"Patience, Mary. I promise we will get to meet him." Dean pretended to be the indifferent guy but he couldn't help the giddy smile that came from his daughter's excitement.
A quick check to his watch and Dean noticed that they only had a few moments until the scheduled book signing. Mary had their own copy, worn and pretty disgusting but she insisted that it be the one he signed, clutched in her palms. When the line suddenly started to move, Mary bounced softly before setting her elbows on her dad's shoulders and puffing out a dramatic sigh.
"You think he will answer my question?"
"I'm sure he will, sweetheart." Dean eyed over a woman standing in front of them. She was gorgeous, dressed in a formal business suit, had no book in her hand, and no children were at her side. Then he poked his head over and noticed that many of the people in this line were attractive women who were standing alone.
Feeling almost frightened, Dean let go of his daughter's ankle to tap on the shoulder of the woman in front of them. She turned with a raised eyebrow.
"This is the line to meet James Novak, right?" Dean asked politely.
The woman nodded with a dopey smile. "Yeah."
"Right. And this James Novak is the kid's book author?" Maybe there had been a mix up.
Again she nodded before something seemed to click in her head. "It's very sweet that you brought your daughter to meet him. I came to-uh-" her eyes glanced briefly up to Mary before she flushed at Dean, "-he's a really handsome guy."
Dean's eyebrows shot up as his jaw dropped slightly. "You're telling me-"
"It's stupid isn't it?" The woman shook her head with a nervous laugh. "But the guy was on a morning talk show the other day and he is perfect. Sweet, handsome, funny, humble, and he wrote a children's book! Complete package!"
Dean nodded, trying to figure out if it was the most insane thing he ever heard. "So you're hoping to score a number?"
Before the woman could nod Mary spoke up. "His number! Dad, that'd be awesome! Maybe he could read me the story to bed like you do! And I'd be able to call him any time I have a question! He could come to Christmas!"
Dean flushed but smiled softly when the woman only chuckled. "I don't think that's gonna happen, sweetheart."
Mary let out a sound of displeasure from the back of her throat and collapsed against his head. "Darn it."
The woman chuckled again softly before having to turn back since the line was moving steadily now. Dean gripped tighter to Mary's ankles and wondered idly what a guy like James Novak would be like to have women come to his book signing in hopes of scoring a date. He'd have to be Adonis level hot, with a Hemingway mind, and probably a Trump bank account. What a catch.
