“But Dean.” Castiel whined as he watched the hunter park the impala out in an open field. “Sam is back at the-“

“No. No work talk tonight. There is no case and I don’t care if the world is ending. I am going to have some fun with you even if this is our last night on Earth.” Dean grinned devilishly as he swung open his door and got out to stretch his legs.

Castiel exited the car robotically. It had been a tiring week on the three of them. When Sam had said something about it being a nice evening, Dean had agreed and stolen Castiel to enjoy it. The warm wind blew the sweet smell of apples into his face causing him to breathe deeply and chase the smell. Most little things Castiel was too busy to notice, like the warm summer breeze or the way the stars lit up the dancing field. But as he listened to Dean pop the trunk, he let the night soak into him and relieve him of the stress of humanity.

“Dean? What is this place?” Castiel’s voice was distant as he let his neck crane back and searched the stars listlessly.

“This is heaven, Cas. I used to come out here all the time when I would stay at Bobby’s. Bring a tent and just stare at the stars all night long.” Dean reappeared by Cas’ side and moved around him to toss a ratty old blanket over the hood of his car.

Cas brought his eyes back down as he watched Dean hop up onto the hood and straighten out the blanket. Their eyes met and Dean patted a spot beside him.

“The view is better from here, I promise.” Dean whispered as he let his back lean and brush the cool windshield.

Cas didn’t wait as he climbed up beside Dean and let their shoulders press together. A warmness started to buzz under his sleeve as Cas laid back and searched the stars again. Another warming breeze soothed over him as the humming sound of midnight crickets filled his ears.

“Dean?”

“Yeah, Cas?”

“I am glad you brought me here. It is nice. I don’t think I have been anywhere this calming before. I like it.” Castiel let his eyes flutter a little as he breathed in the summer night.

Dean watched the small strands of hair wisp along Cas’ forehead. The night seemed secondary to Dean, the real thing he had driven out here for was to watch Cas take in the night. It had been too long since either of them took a deep breath and enjoyed a peaceful summer night.

“I am glad that you like it.” Dean whispered as he let himself lean a little more into Cas than both of them expected.

“I love it.” Cas breathed out deeply. “It is… it really is heaven on Earth.”

“And I have my angel.” Dean whispered before his mind could install a filter. He felt himself tense as Cas turned his attention toward his eyes. They stayed eye locked for what felt like eternity before Cas cracked a small smile.

“I would give up all of heaven, for one of these nights with you.”

Dean felt his chest ache with a burning itch that he couldn’t quite seem to scratch. Castiel let his eyes wander back to the stars as his head fell limply onto Dean’s cold shoulder. They both breathed a little easier as Dean thought out precisely what to say next.

“I didn’t want Sam here, because I wanted to talk with you.” His voice came out sterner than he planned.

“Did I do something wrong?” Cas asked with almost a frightening shyness. His small fingers came up through the moonlight and traced some lines on Dean’s denim pants.
