Prompt from anon: Cas has a nightmare after falling and crawls into bed with Dean and maybe it becomes a nightly habit <3

'

Dean heard the something that jarred him from sleep and caused him to sit up in his bed. His hand shot out on his nightstand and grabbed the knife that he set there every night. Darkness was the only thing his eyes could see as he breathed low and listened intently for what he thought was a scream. As silence filled his head he worked himself down and figured it was a part of his dream.

Then his doorknob squeaked and the door slowly opened. “Dean?”

Dean let out a breath of relief as he set the knife on the nightstand and ran his hands over his face. “What is it, Cas?”

The ex-angel scooted in through the cracked door and didn’t seem to move. Dean swung his legs off of the bed and started toward Cas with some worry. When he got closer, Dean noticed that Cas’ shoulders were shaking.

“Hey, buddy, what’s wrong?” Dean stepped close and placed his hands on Cas’ shoulders to calm him.

“Dean.” Cas’ voice hitched as his shoulder fell into Dean’s touch. “I don’t want to be in there alone.”

“Alright, that’s fine. I’ll stay with you. What happened?”

Cas gulped in some air. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Dean nodded and felt a yawn grasp at the back of his throat. He didn’t want to leave Cas alone, but he was so tired he could pass out right here. So he gripped Cas’ shoulders and led him over to the bed.

“I will let you stay the night here with me, but don’t get weird on me.” Dean collapsed on his bed and soon wound himself under the covers as he plunged his face into his pillow.

“Thank you, Dean.” Cas was still sniffling as he crawled into the bed beside Dean and slept on his side with their backs facing each other.

Dean closed his eyes but listened to Cas’ hitched breathing for what felt like hours before he decided to step in and calm the man down. “Cas, tell me what happened.”

“I closed my eyes and had a ‘nightmare’. I didn’t like it Dean.” Castiel shuddered unto the bed and Dean could feel it.

It broke a part of Dean to hear the pain in Cas’ voice and to know he was dealing with something he had never experienced before. Still fighting for sleep, Dean turned around on his side and breathed out deeply. It was late and maybe part of him was still asleep, because he scooted toward Cas and wrapped an arm protectively around his waist drawing their bodies together.

Cas took in a deep breath. “Dean?”

“Just go to sleep, alright? I am here and there is no reason to be scared. Close your eyes and think of nice things.” Dean yawned as he burrowed his face into the pillow. “I got you, Cas. Just don’t tell Sam about this.”

“I won’t.” Cas’ breathing was soon level and then heavy.

Dean couldn’t help himself but smile as he held the calm sleeping Cas against his chest and felt the weight of knowing he saved Cas, even if just from a nightmare.

Exhaustion gripped Dean’s mind as he slowly let his body melt into the bed. Aches from the day’s hunt soothed into the warmth under the blanket. Laying down was Dean’s favorite part of the day, when he could unwind and close his eyes to a world that he could control. But this night, it seemed the sleep was pushed aside by the familiar sound of the door creaking open and then shutting softly. Dean kept his eyes closed but listened to the patter of feet that came toward his bed. Weight was put on the bed behind Dean as he listened to Cas’ short breathing.
