“They’ll be fine, angel.” Dean soothed with a melting tone and placed a gentle hand on the lower part of his husband’s back. “No worries tonight.”
Cas borrowed his eyes and seemed to pout as the two waited in the lobby of a fancy resturaunt Dean had been dying to take his overworked angel to. “I do not trust Gabriel to pick out suitable presents for us, Dean. You remember last year when he got us-“
Dena flushed and cleared his throat at the memory of the vibrating surprise Gabe had left under their tree for Christmas morning. “The kids are with them. Sam won’t let Gabe do anything inappropriate.”
Finally resolved to the warmth of breath now hitting his neck, Cas sighed and let go of everything that wasn’t revolved around the love of his life. “Okay.”
“Good.” Dean smirked before kissing Cas chastely. “Let’s enjoy this one night of peace away from those rambunctious children.”

“NO!” Mary screamed at the top of her lungs with a reddening face as she broke into a fit right in the middle of the mall. “NO!”
Sam flustered and gave apologetic glances and waves to the many people walking past them and raising eyebrows at the now sobbing child he was supposed to be caring for. “Mary, please. We aren’t shopping for you tonight, sweetie, we are shopping for your dads.”
“I WANT TO GO INTO THE TOY STORE!” Mary glared up at him with anger that matched even Lucifer, in fact Sam would rather face Lucifer all over again than try to fight this battle with his niece.
“When we get presents picked out for your dads, maybe we could go for ice cream?” Sam panicked and tried the bribe that Dean always seemed to manage when Mary got upset.
Immediately her eyes dried and she broke out into a brilliant smile. “Okay.”
Sam rolled his eyes. Maybe she had planned that, but at least she wasn’t screaming and causing a scene anymore. “Let’s go find your brother and uncle.”
Mary slid her little hand into Sam’s and started to skip alongside him down the rows of stores. Sam didn’t regret taking the two youngsters out to shop for Cas and Dean, but he did regret splitting up because he knew he wasn’t the best with children. His life had made him good with demons, not small kids that were demanding and ruthless to get their way. There was no doubt in his mind that Mary was a Winchester.
“Uncle Sammy!” Little Bobby’s voice broke out through the chatter of the shops just as his little head poked up through the crowd.
Sam watched as Gabe appeared behind a group of people with Little Bobby perched up on his shoulder. The little boy’s feet dangled down where Gabe was holding them and Sam couldn’t help but melt at the way Gabe was smiling like he had never been finding more joy in his life. It was in that moment he knew they would be adopting soon, actually probably the moment they stopped hunting and settled. Not that he minded, Gabriel would make the best father.
“You two wayward outcasts find a present?” Gabe raised his eyebrow as they got closer and Sam noticed the small bag clasped tightly in Little Bobby’s fist.
“No. Mary had a little breakdown-“ Sam felt a pinch on his thigh, “-but we were just heading off to find something. What did you two come up with?”
“It’s a blue tie!” Little Bobby grinned widely and enthusiastically waved the bag in front of Gabe’s face. “Uncle Gabe said that Dad would love it!”
Sam cracked a smile and snickered warmly toward his boyfriend. “Really?”
Gabe shrugged. “He lost that old ratchet this ages ago, thought it would make him smile. He was quite attached to it, though I think it isn’t really his color.”
“I want to get Daddy a bracelet!” Mary squealed with delight at her idea as she tugged at Sam’s hand. “A pretty one.”
“Oh, I am sure your Daddy would love that.” Gabe grinned devilishly before turning slightly and scanning over the stores. “Maybe we can put an engraving on it?”
“YES!” Mary didn’t wait before reached out and tugging at the bottom of Gabe’s shirt and leading both men clumsily toward a jewelry store.
Sam bumped shoulders with Gabe and leaned down to kiss him for just a moment on the cheek. Gabe reddened but leaned into his embrace just slightly. They dutifully followed Mary’s lead and ended up huddled in a jewelry store that looked expensive enough to make any hunter turn their nose up. But Sam wasn’t going to deny Mary her present, call him a sucker for those big green eyes.
Gabe shifted a little and managed to get Bobby to where he was cradled against his hip. Little Bobby’s eyes drooped from exhaustion of running around the men’s store in search of the treasured blue tie. Sam smiled again as Gabe combed his fingers lovingly through their nephews hair before turning to a woman who was grinning at them behind a glass counter.
“What may I help you with today?” Her voice was pleasant, but Sam could read the subtle aggravation of her tone.
“I want to get my Daddy a bracelet.” Mary spoke up as she rose on her tip toes and stared at the woman intently. “It has to be pretty and we want to say something on it.”
The woman’s eyes immediately softened and Sam knew that no one could be aggravated when it came to his niece. “What kind of bracelet? Maybe a gold band?”
Mary made a sound of pleasure in the back of her throat before nodding furiously. “Yes! He will love it! Dad told me that Daddy likes nice things. I want to give him something nice because he is the best Daddy in the world.”
Sam and Gabe both let out “awes” just as the woman did. She peered up at them. “Are you the fathers?”
“Uncles.” Gabe stepped forward and searched over the display carefully before pointing to one. “How about that one, Mary?”
The woman pulled it out when Mary nodded and eyed it over with determination. “That is perfect. I love it. Daddy will love it.”
“What do you want the engraving to say, sweetie?”
Mary paused as she turned over her shoulder and met Sam’s eyes. He could see small buds of tears start to swell before she turned back and cleared her little throat. “I want it to say ‘Hey Jude, don't make it bad, Take a sad song and make it better’.” My Daddy sings that to me when I go to bed.”
Sam felt a sob choke in the back of his throat as he watched the back of Mary’s head with so much love he thought he might keel over right in the jewelry store. It was then that he realized what his family was, how much his family really was. A single tear slipped down his face as he felt Gabe’s hand envelop his and give it a tight squeeze.
Little Bobby stirred a little and sang under his breath, “Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah.”
