“I wish it could be different, at least for you.” Dean let his eyes fall down to the tiled floor. His leg began to shake as he tried to contain all the pain that was beginning to surface in his words. Tear clawed at his eyes as he swallowed what felt like the weight of the world trying to bubble up and choke him with sobs.
“I know, Dean.” Sam laid on the hospital bed. He couldn’t even summon the strength to open his eyes. A monitor beeped in the distance and caused Sam to sigh. All he wanted was for his brother to leave him here and continue on without him. A cough scratched at the back of his throat but he tried his hardest to conceal it. He didn’t want to worry his brother.
“The doctors said-“
“Shut up.” Sam clenched his fists into balls over the rough unkind hospital sheets. “Just, shut your mouth.”
Dean stayed silent as his eyes raised and looked over his brother. The rings around his eyes, and the paleness of his younger brother’s face made Dean nauseous. But he stayed quiet as his brother wanted. He couldn’t find it in him to take a seat. If he sat, then this would all be final. He would just be waiting around for his brother to die.
“I love you.” Sam whispered as his voice wavered. “And I want you to go. I don’t want you here when I am weak. I don’t want you to remember me like this.”
Dean felt his cheeks crunch as his mouth twisted up in an ugly pained expression. He bit his tongue and felt a burst of a sob compact his chest. Breath seemed like a trap toward crying. Dean didn’t want to cry in front of his dying brother.
“Oh God, Sam. I am not leaving your side. You will not die here alone.” Dean reached his hand up and clasped it over his mouth. His shoulders began to shake as he suppressed the violent sobs that wanted so desperately to surface. Suddenly his vision was clouded.
“We all die alone, Dean.” Sam turned his head from his brother and felt his own spasm of shakes begin to climb in him. “We knew this day was coming.”
“Dammit Sammy, we said we were going to beat this.” Dean let his hand fall as the tears flowed and he choked a little with each exhale. Bile was beginning to form in the back of his throat.
“I wasn’t strong enough.”
“Don’t you dare fucking say that. You outlived far past when the doctors had said you would. You were so close-“ Dean felt his chest collapse as he began to sob loudly. Each one broke another part of his heart. His entire being was shaking and falling to pieces as he stared down at his unmoving dying brother.
“I know. So close…” Sam turned his head and finally opened his eyes and looked up at his brother with a small warm smile. Tears began to streak down his own face as he watched helplessly as his brother crumbled. “Dean, it’s okay. It’s all going to be okay. You are going to walk out of here and start fresh. Do all the things we were going to do. I love you, okay? I love you so much.”
“No.” Dean managed to break his sobs a little as he bent down and burrowed his wet face into Sam’s chest. “No. No. No.” It was the only word that he could manage to mumble as he started to scream into his brother’s warm still beating chest.
“Dean.” Sam used all of his strength to bring his hand up and run it through Dean’s hair. “Please. You have to go. You have to keep living. You can’t let my death ruin everything for you. I love you. And I can’t sit here and watch this destroy you.”
“You are all I have, Sammy.” Dean was trembling now but his sobs became a little softer. “I have nothing without you.”
“I will always be there.” Sam reached under Dean and felt the pendant that he had given Dean a few years back. He squeezed it and warmed it in his palm. “I will never leave your side for a moment.”
