Paint The Sky

"I would paint stars into the daylight." Castiel pondered as he shook his head to make it more comfortable against the grass.

Dean crossed his hands over his chest and sighed dramatically. "That's so cheesy. This whole thing is cheesy."

The two best friends lay out on Dean's front lawn and stared up at the sky. Most days after school they would do this and discuss things that most kids never gave the time to think about. It was always Cas who started it, making Dean feel like an idiot for some of the things his best friend said. Dean already knew Cas was smart beyond his years, and he was glad to be the one that heard all of the genius ideas before the rest of the world caught on. Today, the discussion had turned to painting the sky.

"I'd draw a dick."

"Of course you would, Dean." Cas rolled his eyes but didn't let the rude comment detour his wondering mind. "What if the sky looked like a Picasso?"

"Or a Dr. Suess?" Dean snorted at his own humor but tilted his head to watch his friend's eyes scan the skies. Cas was really beautiful when he was lost in thought.

"I'd paint it green." The older boy smirked softly to himself. "An array of greens that would marble over and take everyone's attention. A green that could capture your heartbeat and store it in a bottle. A green that would make you forget about every frown that ever lined your face. A green that would make everything else in the world seem gray and dull."

Dean turned his eyes back up to the sky. He tried to imagine the baby blue as any color and immediately he smiled warmly. "I'd paint it a deep blue. One that was deeper than the oceans. Maybe through in specs of purple when the light hits it just right. On stormy days it would look like crashing waves, and on sunny days it would look like that pond we used to swim in. Swirls and blotches and somehow it would come together and knock your socks right off."

The two boys stayed quiet for a while. Dean's ears twitched when he heard Cas shifting. Then he felt a warm hand slip into his and fingers intertwine his. A flush creeped up his neck but he didn't dare turn toward his best friend, instead he closed his eyes to the dull sky above them and squeezed Cas' hand tight in his.

"Maybe one day the two would clash." Cas whispered softly. "The blue and the green would melt together and move against each other until the sky looked as though it was on fire. It would burn inside everyone and never turn dark."

"Yeah." Dean exhaled and clenched his eyes until he was seeing circles on his eyelids. "That'd be cool."

"We'd paint the sky, Dean. You and I." Lips pressed against his cheek. "It would be breathtaking."

"Forever, Cas." Dean let his head fall to the side and captured those lips against his. "The sky would be ours forever."
