Click. Whir. And it begins.
Clementine's tight grip on the small recorder, her thumb continuing to hold down the play button as the whirling of the tape inside filled her ears. Ever since she had been given the little device, since Kenny had slipped it into her palms upon their reunion, she had never let it out of her sight.
<I>"I've never listened to it before." She remembered he had stated gruffly and softly back then, not wanting to wake the other cabin members as they had talked and caught up late into the night.
"Why?"
"Batteries." He had stated with a weak chuckle. "They need 'em but for the love of me I've never been able to find any. Or if I did I've never had time to ever put them in."
She remembered glancing down at the small plastic object, twirling it in her dirty, unwashed fingers. "So I can keep it?"
"For the rest of your days, Clem."</I>
She pressed her body against her mattress, allowing the feeling of the cool sheets against her heated shirt fabric.
"Sweet pea,"
And now she was down the rabbit hole. The first two words caused her to flinch, physically feeling her heart break. His first two words; the first of the last and already she was on the brink of tears.
"I need to tell you something very, very important." He stated gruffly. She never would understand when he had the time to record this. "You need to know sweet pea, that I love you very much. I never want anything bad to happen to you. I never have and I never will."
"Lee..." She whimpered, clamping her eyes shut and throwing her palms to stop the flow of tears before it cascaded down her pale cheeks.
A small cough escaped the speaker of the recorder, causing her stomach to jolt. She knew he wasn't well when he had recorder we this. She knew that the as soon as she had graced with this key to the past. Yet still with every shallow breath and jagged cough, she lurched just imaging the pain he was going through.
She could imagine him sitting somewhere, finally managing to escape the rest of their group for even a few short moments. His bite visible through whatever dimly lit room he sat in, she could picture him reaching into his back pocket and tugging out the recorder he had with him. Ever since Carly had given it to him way back at the motor inn he had kept it and always spoke about not knowing what to do with it. Now he was finally going to use it. She could visualize the pain he was going through, the groaning and the sighing of the infection sinking into his blood and bones. The feeling of morphing into the undead. And to take him away from the pain and sorrow of the world, he turned to her; his little angel. The one thing that could brighten even his darkest moments. So he turned his pain into a message of hope for her, and she would never be able to thank him enough for that.
The squealing of floorboards outside caused her eyes to drift towards her oak door. Yet again, they found the need to listen in. To know. To witness her sorrow.
She knew that it was simply out of love the things that they did; the way that they watched over her. She never felt violated or angry, only saddened. They worried about her health when really they needed to focus on their own. Cold would be fine, it was them who needed the care. One person in particular always awaited outside of her door, but never came in. When her crying began, that's when his walking did as well as. Today wasn't going to be any different Clementine had assumed.
"I loved you ever since I first met you. I knew you were..." A faint sigh, a distant groan in the background. Clementine had always assumed them to be walkers lurking around outside wherever he was. "The sweetest little girl I had ever met."
She gave a sad smile, hugging the small plastic device against her chest. Even deceased he still had the power to make her smile.
"You know, after spending so much time with you, I think I'm finally ready to answer that question you asked me so long ago. We hadn't known each other for too long then."
"What is it Lee?" She asked softly. Speaking to the recording always made her feel a little closer. She had almost memorized all of his responses she had listened to it so many times. At this point she was nearing one hundred at least. Soon she would need new batteries.
The floorboards outside of her room creaked with interest.
"You asked me if I ever thought about having kids."
"Yeah, I remember that Lee."
He chuckled. "After spending so much time with you I've decided. Yes. I want kids. Maybe when this all settles down."
"That sounds amazing, Lee." She remembered he had told her he wasn't sure if life was ever going to settle down. Know in his final moments, attempting to assure her that there was a light at the end of the tunnel, made her heart swell.
"But until then, and after then, you're my one and only sweet pea. I'll take care of you. I won't let anything bad happen to you."
"Promise me, Lee?"
"I promise you."
Clementine smiled, feeling the gentle tears fall down her cheeks and land onto the mattress beneath her. She had no words to describe the level of love she had and continued to have for him. "I love you, Lee." She managed to choke out through the lump in her throat.
"I love you sweet pea. Forever."
"Forever."
Click.
And it was done.
After a few minutes of silence the floorboards shuffled and a gentle knock came against her door. Today there was silence. No crying. Clementine's frequent visitor seemed to now want to come in.
A distraught Luke poked his head in, with the studying eyes of Kenny watching from the floor below. "Clem? You okay?"
Clementine remained silent, allowing her tears to flow down her face. She didn't move or flinch, or say a word. She just say and studied the ceiling, squeezing small device as tightly as she could. Until finally, the male drew closer and gathered the breaking girl in his arms, rocking her back and forth. He was unable to watch her in this much pain. He could listen to her from outside the door and leave her be, but now he was here. He was watching her pain, and he knew she needed someone.
"I'm just talking to Lee." She finally whispered.
"I could hear. He sounds like an amazing guy."
Click.
And it began again.
"He still is."
