Clementine was used to sharing a room with Sarah. While Carlos was hesitant to allow it at first, the two eventually wore him down; most of the work being done by Sarah. But something that Clementine wasn’t used to was the sound of slicing skin through the thick night air.
Hearing this sound, Clementine brushed it off. It was probably just Sarah shifting in her sheets and it made a weird noise. After all, Clementine was found to normally overreact when it came to Sarah. She couldn’t help it. She was only worried for her friend.
But there the sound was again.
The tearing of skin, and the soft whimper of an innocent girl.
“Sarah?” Clementine’s soft voice filled the air as she pushed herself out of her blankets, and waddled closer to the female’s bed.
Silence.
Worry consumed Clementine’s mind as she walked closer, carefully and cautiously approaching the resting place of her friend. Finally, she gripped onto the fabric and tore it away from the mattress, exposing through the moonlight Sarah, teary eyed and glancing up at Clem and away from her bloody arm.
“Sarah…!” Clementine breathed in shock, shakily dropped the blanket her fingers were grasping.
“I’m sorry Clem, I….I just couldn’t take it….I-I can’t….can’t do this…” The raven-haired girl sobbed, curling into herself and smearing some of the crimson liquid against her shirt.
Clementine, now recovered from her shock, took a seat in front of the female against her mattress and nervously squeezed her hands together in her lap. “Sarah, how long has this been happening?” Clem tried to fight the shakiness in her voice and failed, squeezing her fists closed in anger at herself.
“Just over a week.”
Clementine exhaled sharply, ripping her gaze away from the female’s eyes and only focusing on the pair of metal scissors in her hands. “Give them to me.” She demanded.
Holding the object close to her chest, Sarah declined. “N-No! I’m not!”
“Sarah, come on!” Reaching out for them, Sarah tugged them away before the raven-haired child could grasp them.
Her face forming into a scowl, Clem walked over to her end of the room and ripped a loose nail from out of the wall above her bed.
“C-Clem?”
Walking back to her friend, Clementine rolled up one of her sleeves and sliced the sharp metal edge against her skin, causing Sarah to gasp.
“C-Clementine! Stop that!”
“No. Not until you stop.” She demanded, making another long harsh dash along her arm.
It didn’t matter to her if she harmed herself. After all, nobody in the house would notice. If her parents were alive, they would have cared immensely. But now everyone was too worried about survival to notice if anyone had any pain. They wouldn’t see how badly she was hurting, they were only concerned about themselves. That was the kind of world they lived in now.
She flinched slightly in pain as the stinging feeling ripped up her arm, but she continued to do so another three times before Sarah spoke.
“O-Okay! Okay! J-Just stop that.” Clementine quickly ripped the metal scissors out of her hand and tugged down her sleeve.
“It hurts to see a friend in pain, doesn’t it?” Sarah opened her mouth to answer, but Clem had already turned away. She placed the two objects under her bed, and crawled under her sheets once more. “Goodnight Sarah.”
“G-Goodnight…Clem.”

“Hey, Clem?” Luke grunted, screwing in one final bolt into the wind turbine’s engine.
“Hm?” The child’s golden eyes perked up upon hearing her name. “Yeah?”
“Pass me the pliers, would ya?”
Clementine nodded, despite the fact that Luke couldn’t see with his head stuck in the machine. Placing the object in his outstretched hands caused the male to tug away from the machine and give a nod of thanks, removing it from her grasp. “Thanks, kiddo.”
Clementine gave a tiny nod, retracting her arm, but not before Luke could faintly see scratch marks along the girl’s skin.
Blinking in shock, the male gave a tiny, nervous cough. “U-Uh, Clem? Do you also mind passing me that pair of gloves there?”
“Sure.” Repeating the same gesture, Luke was able to grab a better look at the child’s arm. Sure enough, five long cuts ran across the female’s skin. Luke’s eyes widened in horror as he stared down at Clementine, watching as she placed old equipment away; blissfully unaware of his discovery.
How could she, harm herself?
“Thanks for your help Clem, you can go hang out with Sarah now.” Luke said quietly, still recovering from his disbelief.
Kenny, off to the side and working on his own device, turned to watch where the noise was coming from. “Luke, you almost got that done yet?” He snarled, watching as Clementine raced off to be with her friend.
Luke grumbled slightly in return before speaking. “I actually need your help with something.”
“Well, shocked there.” Kenny groaned, standing from his seat and stomping over to the other male. “What is it? This can’t be that hard can it?”
“That’s not why I called you over here.” Luke whispered, casting a side glance to the girls.
“Well, then why the hell are you wasting my time?!”
Luke scowled. “I’m worried about Clementine.”
Just hearing the child’s name was enough to tame the adult. “Why? What happened?” He demanded, his face now painted with concern rather than annoyance. On any occasion, on any day, Clementine was his weak spot.
“I think I saw…No, I know I saw scars along her arm.”
Kenny immediately crossed his arms. “Kid, everyone has a few scars now-a-days. The dead are up and walking around, clearly some people are going to get scratched.”
“No, no! They looked…self-made.” He whispered, not wanting to grab too much attention from the others in the area. Only Kenny deserved to know. At least for now.
Kenny’s eyes grew a little more, turning over his shoulder to watch the bubbly girl giggle and laugh happily with her friend as they spoke, relaxing on the frozen grass outside of the ski lodge entrance. “You better stop making this shit up, boy.”
“I’m not.”
“Are you trying to tell me that Clementine—that sweet, darling, little Clementine—is hurting herself?”
“I’m afraid so.”
When Kenny turned around once more, Clementine reached her hand up to Nick to take a water bottle from his hands, and two bloody scars were revealed along her skin. “Dear god…” He sighed sadly, watching as she returned to her previous duties of laughing with Sarah. “Clementine, what’s happened to you?”

As Clementine sliced another cut against her skin, she stuffed the scissors and nails under a floorboard by her bed, and glared across the room at Sarah. “You promised.”
“I-I’m sorry, Clem.” She whispered sadly. “I just can’t do it. I need to do that. I can’t explain why.”
“Then I guess I need to do it too then.”
Sarah glanced down at her fresh cuts, and quickly covered them with her sweater sleeve, emotional pain stricken over her features. “I’m sorry, Clementine.”
Clem remained silent, crossing her arms and giving her always-sassy skeptical gaze. But a gentle knock against their bedroom door caused the female to relax her expression towards the visitor.
Or at least this time, visitors.
“Hey Sarah,” Luke began. “You’re Dad said that he needed your help downstairs. Something about that Christmas tree again.”
Sarah forced a tiny smile and nodded, working her way past Luke and brushing into another figure on her way out.
Seeing that the girl was now safely out of earshot, Luke opened the door and allowed Kenny to enter the room before him, and clicked the door shut behind the two. “Clem, we need to talk to you.”
Clementine tensed as Kenny gently sat her on her bed as the two adults took a seat on either side of her. “Uhm…okay.” She said softly with a tiny shrug.
“Clem, we’ve seen your scars.”
Clementine froze solid.
Oh god.
Oh god.
They saw the scars she had made for Sarah.
“Guys, I—”
“Clementine, I can’t stand to see you like this.” Kenny cut in, turning his body to face the female. “I don’t want you to feel pain.”
“Neither of us can. Neither of us want you to.”
“Clem, we’re here for you, okay? Don’t ever think we aren’t.”
Clementine’s eyes teared slightly as she glanced between the two, listening to them continue to display how much they truly cared for her. They didn’t even need to, but they didn’t know that. They thought she was hurting, and they wanted to fix it. Even if they didn’t need to do it. They cared that much about her.
“We love ya, Clem. To the moon and back.” Luke, placing an arm against the female’s shoulder.
“You’re our family.”
Clementine knew that they were being sincere. And while she should have told them about Sarah, about how she wasn’t doing it because she personally felt pain, she didn’t.
She remained quiet.
She would keep Sarah’s secret, and wouldn’t say a word, because that, right there, is what Sarah needed.
She needed to be told and shown how much she meant to someone. Then all the pain that caused her to act such a way, would disappear.
And all the doubts Clementine once had clouding her mind, were now gone.
She was loved.
She did have a family that cared about her first.
They cared for her.
And she cared for them.
“I love you guys too.” Clementine’s head flopped against Kenny’s arm in a quick, comforting hug before Luke took her hand and helped her towards the door.
Together. As a family should.
Stepping outside of the room, Clem could see Carlos wrapping his daughter in a tight embrace, and a warm, loving hug.
One of the girl’s eyes opened to see her friend watching her, causing Sarah to smile and nod.
She knew she was loved in the same way that Clementine now knew.
They were both free.
As Kenny brushed past Clem on his way dow the stairs, he gave her hat small rub causing him to emit a soft chuckle. “Oh my darling Clementine, it’s good to have you back.”
