“I need it! We can’t leave it behind!”
“Clementine, we don’t have time. Move it!” Kenny growled, pointing in the direction of the museum gift shop.
Clementine frowned, her face contorting into one of sorrow. “Kenny, please—”
“We don’t have time to argue. We need to go!” Kenny placed his hand against Clementine’s back and shoved her forwards, watching behind her for any lurking walkers. “They’ll be on us any minute now…”
Clementine gave a tiny cry as she stumbled forwards, holding her arm sadly as she started forwards.
Hearing the commotion, Luke turned around and re-entered the area, startled by how upset Clem seemed. Even more shocking; her hat was missing. “Clem, what’s going on? Where’s your hat?” He asked, keeling to her level and placing his hands on her arms to stop her walking.
Clem glanced up with a frown, slightly pulling out of his grasp. “It fell off in the last attack.” She said quietly with a sigh. “We don’t have time to go back for it though.”
Luke’s eyes darted past the young girl’s sorrowful face to see Kenny storming towards them.
“What are you guys still doing here? We need to get moving!”
Luke stood, his face painted with rage. “I’m going this way.” Luke stated, brushing past Kenny and starting towards the location of the last attack.
“Why the hell would you do that dumbass?” Kenny growled. It wasn’t a secret that the two didn’t like each other, but it also wasn’t a secret that Kenny was getting harder to live with day by day.
“I have a hat to find.” He yelled over his shoulder, determination radiating off of his body more and more with every step.
Kenny groaned in defeat. “Good god, all this trouble for one lousy hat.” Kenny’s hand smacked Clementine’s shoulder ushering her forwards and away from Luke.
“Aren’t we going to go and help him?” She asked, her hands balling into little nervous fists around the ends of her jacket.
“If he’s so set on finding that thing, he can do it alone.”
Clementine’s eyes widened in horror as Kenny continued to push her forwards, ranging from gentle to rough. He intended well, she just needed to keep reminding herself of that. She couldn’t forget that.
After finally reaching the small gift shop, Clementine nervously squeezed her arms as she glanced over the bare field, searching for any signs of Luke. “Where is he…” She whispered softly to herself.
“Clem?” Bonnie called softly, cautiously approaching the girl, aware she was in a fragile state. Clementine seemed like glass now; if you’d touch her, she’d shatter. “Don’t worry, he’ll be back soon. With Luke that’s always the case.” She placed a hand on her shoulder and gave a small smile, hoping to calm her nerves even the slightest bit. But seeing Clementine’s eyes meet hers for a moment and then tear away to resume her search, she frowned and left the young girl in peace.
“Clementine, we need you.” Rebecca called as she was rested down on the ground by the others.
Clementine sighed, glancing at the wasteland once more before turning away to help her group. Where was Luke? He couldn’t be gone again, could he?
“We need to close the gate.” Kenny claimed, storming closer and reaching up to grab the latch.
“No! Luke’s not back yet, we can’t close it!”
“Clementine, he went looking for your hat and he knew the consequences. He knew what he was getting himself into. Close the fucking gate!”
“No!”
Kenny violently grabbed Clementine’s arm and shoved her into the room, slamming the gate closed and starting towards Rebecca. “There, now let’s get this done.”
“But what about Luke?!”
“He’s on his own.” Kenny growled, glancing over his shoulder.
Clementine gasped in sorrow, turning to stare at the closed gate. He was gone. That was all that mattered to her anymore.
She sadly wandered aimlessly into the gift shop, and stopped at the back where she sat in a tiny chair and stared aimlessly at the ground.
Kenny was too busy prepping an in-labour Rebecca, and her cries of pain muffled the noise of the metal gate opening once more with help from Bonnie.
Kenny glanced up and glared as the figure wandered through the gift shop, striding with determination towards the young girl at the back.
“Clem, you look a little down.” The voice stated in its classic accent.
Clementine’s eyes widened and glanced up to meet the gaze of the figure. “And you’re missing something.” Pulling the cap out of his back pocket, Luke held her classic hat in front of her.
A gasp escaped the young girl’s lips. “I thought it was gone!” Her golden eyes locked into his hazel ones. “I thought you were gone.” Her eyes glazed with sorrow as she stood in front of him, sliding her hat onto her head.
“Thank you.” He whispered quietly, kneeling down to be at her level.
Happily, Clementine wrapped her arms around him in a warm hug, so unbelievably thankful that he was back safe and sound.
And for some reason, this all felt familiar. She felt a warm feeling in her heart, and a small smile worked it’s way onto her face.
And she knew why.
