It wasn't a surprise that eventually they would stumble upon a moment like this. The defining moment that proved that these two would be together through it all.
Clementine and Lee had been stuck like glue for years. It was hard (not to mention painful) for them to think back to a time where they didn't have each other. They were each other's support systems, friends, loved ones, and - most importantly - they were each others family. The only family either of them had left.
Not only had the two suffered through horrifying and life-flashing-before-eyes moments in their time together, they also managed to fight through revivals.
"L-Lee..." Clementine whispered, her voice shaking as she glanced down at her "father's" wrist. The gash was huge. Deeper and far more disgusting than the little girl ever could have imagined. Her finger wobbled as she gestured to the gaping opening. It wasn't bleeding however, it was simply an open purple contortion that covered his normally healthy skin like a body bag.
Lee followed her eyes as, they too, landed against the gruesome disfigurement. "Clem, sweet-pea, it's okay."
"L-L-Lee you're bitten. It's not okay." She mumbled, bubbling and slurring her words as she felt her eyes well with tears and her lips wobble. She could hardly speak. Think. Function. What do you do in an instance like this? When everything in your life is being waved in front of you like a toy you can't have, then ripped away?
"Clem, I got bit a long time ago and nothing's happened. I'm fine. Okay? I'm going to be okay." He knew deep down that if anything was going to happen to him revolving the bite it would have started to happen by now. Almost a full day had passed and not a single side effect had taken over his body. Nothing had changed, except for the throbbing of his wrist of course.
Clementine paused, eyes raising to scan his eyes for sincerity. And that was the moment he knew. He was immune.
Clementine's hand reached out and rested itself against his arm, just above where the bite scar was and smiled up at her companion. "Do you think we're safe out here?"
Lee glanced behind their small herd, studying for light sources from Carver and his gang before turning to face his adopted-daughter. "Positive." Truthfully, he was not. He simply said the words to calm the child down and not rile up her anxiety if it wasn't necessary. If they needed to worry, he would tell her and they would safely organize a plan. Until then they would wait and remain calm. At least Lee would ensure Clem would.
Clementine had changed a fair amount as she grew up with the male - whom she had now grown to see as her father. While she still called him Lee, anyone could see clear as the stars in the sky that she saw him as her Dad now, and everyone knew Lee saw her as his little sweet-pea. Clem had grown up rather happy despite her world. For a while after the "death" of her parents she went through stages of intense sorrow and darkness that no amount of tugging could bring her out of. But as time progressed and as she grew older she didn't age into someone with a heart of stone. Instead she blossomed into a young woman that had a caring soul and offered help as often as she could to Lee or groups they came across on their journey.
The group began to slow as they started their way up a rather large hill. Lee pat his child's back to urge her forwards while he followed close behind; just in case she fell or needed support on the steep climb.
Without Clem looking Lee glanced back and studied the area he previously glanced at to calm Clem's nerves. Studying where they had been closely he noticed a few lights painting the bridge they had crossed a few hours back. "Shit..." He mumbled under his breath. How on earth were they onto them so quickly? All he knew was now that they were off the beaten path, they needed to find a place to lay low. At least for the night.
Working their way slowly up the hill, upon reaching the top the group paused much to Lee's dismay. They needed to keep moving if Carver's gang was onto them. "Why don't we keep go--" He froze mid sentence, gazing upon what the others had feasted their worries with. A ski lodge. Dark, slightly run-down, but - best of all - quiet. Potentially abandoned. Hopefully abandoned. "Wow." He breathed softly.
With excitement and gratitude lingering behind his lips he turned to speak with the other adults only to meet nothing but empty air. He paused, blinking in confusion, before turning his head and watching as the group had already started forwards up onto the front deck and towards the doorway. His eyes widened in panic, desperately clasping to make sure Clementine was still beside him.
The child glanced up at her caretaker confused. They made arrangements before they met up with their new group that they would need to stick by each others sides no matter what. Literally and figuratively. This, however, was a "literally" moment. "What's wrong?"
"They shouldn't be going up there without arming themselves."
"But it looks like it's empty."
"That doesn't mean it is. People are sneaky now, Clem. They'll do anything to stay alive."
Sure enough, before he could finish his last word, yelling could be heard from the front doors of the building.
Clementine gasped and Lee instinctively pushed the child behind him, snatching her hand in his own. He slowly started up the hill, his free hand tugging his gun out of his pants and sliding it into position between his fingers. With every step closer he could hear the yelling and the constant back-and-forth of "what your intentions were walkin' up onto our property".
"Lee..." Clementine whispered. He didn't respond as he slithered up to the back of the group, hiding behind them begging to see who their threateners were.
Clementine's hand slowly loosened itself from his grasp, and before Lee had a chance to snap it back, he realized that the little girl was gone and had been consumed by the group of terrified friends in front of them. He couldn't whisper-scream for her to come back because then his presence would be made known. Instead he just needed to sit in horror, his heart slamming against his chest, waiting to hear any sign that she was okay.
"Kenny?"
Lee paused, the single word making his heart stop its screaming for a brief moment. Why did she say that? Of all the things she could have said...why that? Lee stood, back tall and strong as he glanced forwards, eager to see what exactly Clementine was calling to.
There was a man with a green jacket, scruffy beard and dark, looming hat standing before her holding a riffle aimed at the unlucky members of their group standing at the front. His head raised, his aged nose and eyes finally coming to light of the setting sun and the rising moon. "Clementine?" The voice breathed. But that voice, the accent, something about his stance and harsh appearance; it was all coming together.
The child lunged forwards, grasping her old friend desperately in her child-like hands. Her palms were squeezing the fabric so tightly the colour may as well have oozed out and onto her fingers, staining them the old shade of discarded grass. Her orbs were sealed shut like a treasure chest hiding it's beautiful brilliant secrets from the world. Her feelings. Her thoughts. "I can't believe I found you."
"I can't believe you're back." He whispered, glancing up at the group as the child slowly pulled away, allowing him to push himself back up to his feet. He studied the group she was with, whom had all lowered their hands as they watched in confusion as the two rejoiced in reunion. "Y'all are welcome inside. Go on in." He grumbled, holding his hand back as a way of telling his team to stand down. "You're okay to go."
But as the group dispersed Lee slowly emerged on the shoreline of what was once an ocean of people. Kenny was about to enter following suit behind his crew when Clem tugged at his sleeve and gestured with her head to the figure lurking in the shadows. Kenny's eyes squinted, fixating on the man as he drew closer and loomed over his younger companion. Kenny remained silent, drinking in everything that had changed about the man he once called his best friend. It was him. It had to be. There wasn't a doubt in his mind. Their departure seemed far too long ago.
He grinned, his beard tugging at the corner of his mouth as he did so. "Welcome back, bud."
Lee gave a gentle chuckle, watching Clem admire the two with utter joy at the miracle taking place before them.
"Good to see you again, Ken."
Wrapping his arm around his friend's shoulder, Kenny escorted his two old friends inside, welcoming them to their new home.
