"What if you two went on a dinner date?"

"What?" Clementine turned, halting the action of cleaning her gun to respond to the odd question. With a cloth in one hand and weapon in the other, Clem did a once-over of Javier in confusion. The request seemed to be out of nowhere. She couldn't quite figure what he was suggesting.

"Oh you know," Javi nodded his head forwards, gesturing to the teen who had just parted ways from speaking with her. Gabe had only just began to walk away, going to assist a mother carrying a box of supplies into a small medical tent. Before he vanished he had been speaking with Clementine, asking her the backstory behind her prized weapon.

"Gabe?"

"Obviously." Javi shrugged, settling his hands on his hips. "The guy has a major crush on you. Why not give him a chance?"

Instantly, the girl's muscles clutched tighter, spreading tension throughout the upper half of her body. "I'm not," she hesitated slowly putting her weapon away. "Interested."

Javi's arms deflated, his body sagging in disappointment. He could already knew how crushed Gabe would be when he delivered the news. "Not at all?"

Clementine shook her head, her hands swinging to now be in front of her body. "Not really. I don't really uhm," she cleared her throat, rubbing at the back of her neck. "Swing that way."

Javi paused. "Are you trying to make a baseball reference?"

Silence.

"I mean, I guess yeah."

"Because I don't understand."

"Of course you don't." Clementine sighed, hands now setting against her hips. It didn't seem like there was any other way she'd be able to explain herself without spelling it out clearly for him.

"So," he began again, snapping the teen out of her cautious daze. "Do you mind explaining it?"

Yep. She would spell it out plain and simple.

"I'm gay." Her heartbeat escalated dramatically, slamming itself into her throat and causing her to choke on the sensation. She coughed to brush the feeling away. "I like girls."

Javi stood in silent shock, arms swaying limply by his sides. "Oh." He breathed, nodding his head and hoping to force himself out of the awkward position he had wedged himself into. "I see."

"Yeah," the girl sighed, eyes wandering around Richmond in hopes of not meeting his gaze. "So when I said I don't swing that way--"

"Okay, now I gotcha."

She gave a small nod, stifling the laughter she could feel bubbling in her chest at how slowly the puzzle pieces were clicking together for him. The reaction was actually better than what she was expecting. She had braced herself for anger, even the usual 'it's a phase you'll grow out of' spiel but, yet again, she didn't have anything to fear around Javi. Yet again, he understood her.

Behind her, Clementine could sense the faint crunching of footsteps and watched as Javi's eyes darted past her shoulder only to meekly shake his head. Still, she knew exactly who it was. Turning around she met the gaze of Gabe, red in the cheeks and meekly shifting from foot to foot.
