Her eyes drifted the sunset. Her mind wandering as did the leaves that fluttered to the ground around her.
She was alone.
Alone to her thoughts.
A daunting idea for someone of her age in this world.
In the days she grew up in, being left to ones thoughts was a dangerous task. One may think they're wading in a pond of ponders but can quickly be felt drowning in the deep seas of emotional turmoil.
Knowing this, and knowing what too much thinking could do to a person almost drove little Clementine insane.
How long would she have? How long until the hauntings dwelling in her mind came forwards?
Her lip quivered. Her head dropped. Her heart sagged. What had she done to deserve this? What had she done to be cursed with this life? What had she done that allowed her family's and friend's blood to coat her hands?
She lifted her palms, looking deep inside of them for answers. Lee. Mom. Dad. Duck.
"Clementine?" A breathy voice.
She looked up.
Kenny.
And Kenny.
His name escaped her lips in a breathy, hushed tone; much like the way hers did his. She could only see as much as an outline through her teared vision. Blurred, faint, but definitely there. Unless her mind was already starting to play tricks with her, waggling the ones she had lost just before her nose before cruelty ripping the false illusion away.
Feeling the warmth of skin touching her shoulders, she knew her mind wasn't attacking her just yet.
Kenny was real. Kenny was here.
"Kenny!" She cried. It sounded as if she was terrified, the way his name leapt from her lips in a cry. Really, she was astonished. Amazed. Breath-taken at the idea that he was here before her. He lived. He had survived where others had failed.
Where her parents had.
Where Lee had.
Where she had.
"Hey, hey, come on now." She couldn't understand why he was cooing such sweet words into her ear, telling her to calm down. She felt calm. At least she thought she was. Until her mind finally registered on the situation before her.
Her fingers were desperately clutching the back of his shirt, squeezing any life out of the fabric he wore on his back. Her mouth was partially open, broken wails escaping at every breath.
She couldn't feel it. She couldn't feel herself physically breaking. She was so numb to it all.
She was becoming numb to herself.
"Shh, it's fine Clem. It's fine now." His rough hands pat her back soothingly, allowing the bottled up trauma to burst from her body in broken, horrified sobs.
"Clementine," His soft voice - while dripping with exhaustion - was still so relaxing to hear against her tortured ears. She nodded against his shoulder, unable to bring herself to tug away from the warm hug of another. Maybe she hadn't been out in the world on her own for long, but that was exactly it.
She had shot her best friend, her caretake, she would even dare to say her second father, in the forehead. Then fled.
Young.
Alone.
"Where's Lee?"
Her body shook, her legs collapsing under her and allowing the entirety of her weight to press against his chest as she felt his arm wrap itself around her back to hold her up steady.
He stood silently, holding her tightly as her body shook, now silent tears creating storming oceans against her once calm seas.
"It's okay Clem, I gotcha now."
Suddenly, as if out of nowhere, her feet were dangled above the ground, the feeling of weightlessness carrying her body up into the sky before crashing back down into his arms.
Kenny had hoisted her up, wrapping his arms around the small child and surveying the landscape before them. The field of vast possibilities who, much like their own lives, has holdings which remained unknown.
"I gotcha." He mumbled again, rubbing her back as he started away from her tree stump and shade and ventured out into the grass. Her cheek rested against his shoulder, bobbing with each step he took. Her fingers latching onto his his shirt tighter and tighter each passing moment. As each daunting thought entered her head each was fought away by his tight grip on her reality.
He had saved her in more ways than one that day. Ways she still had yet to tell him.
Even now, whenever the thoughts of the war they fought plagued her mind, the child would close her eyes and think back to the fall day underneath the oak tree.
And she would remember Kenny coming to her rescue.
Saving her from herself.
