With the slamming thud of a loud oak door, Luke panted desperately and rubbed his brow. "Dang..." He groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose in his dirty fingers before turning to the young girl beside him. "You okay, Clem?"
The little girl panted and nodded, leaning her back against the door with a sigh of defeat. "Yeah, I'm good." After a moment of hesitation, refilling her lungs like a balloon, she smiled up at her friend and nodded.
Ruffling her hair playfully, the male glanced deeper into their tiny hideaway to scan over the rest of their group. A swarm of walkers had fallen on top of them like a boulder, so using all the energy they had they ran until they wound up on the outskirts of a small town, and made their way into the first building they could see.
"Okay, first things first we really need to get this door blocked. If there's any chance those walkers followed us here we need to make sure we have the entrance sealed off."
"I'll go get the others. I'll look for another exit on the way." She shrugged. "Just in case."
Nodding and giving her a playful nudge on the arm the male nodded. "You've been taught well, kiddo."
"Only by the best." As the girl wandered away to attract the attention of the others, Luke crossed his arms and studied her movements. Even though they had only known each other for a rather short period of time, everyday he could still see the little girl growing up more and more even in the littlest of ways. Like whenever someone was cooking dinner she would step in and finish, or when someone needed help opening a package, or if Sarah needed to have someone to talk to before she went to sleep. The things that a parent should have to do Clementine would always step in and offer to do. For whatever reason, it made Luke's heart ache a little.
That little girl was growing up too fast. All because of the world around them.
"Hey Luke?"
"Wha--hm? Yeah, Clem?" He mumbled, jumping out of his pit of thought.
"There's a back door but I blocked it with a whole bunch of boxes of clothes. The others are coming to block the front door."
Luke nodded before freezing and glancing at the girl with an odd gaze. "Clothes?"
"Yeah. There are tons of crates in the back full of them." She quickly scoured the nearly empty room, gloom and sorrow filling its walls and air. "I assume most people passed through and took what was in plain sight." She sighed and crossed her arms. "Maybe it was a clothing store."
Luke gave a small nod and studied the child carefully. Even though Clementine loved her look, Luke could tell it was wearing off. Her classic jeans were starting to get rips against the knees and thighs, and her comfy purple shirt was starting to get holes and tears from all the woods they needed to brush through. "Wanna go take a look with me?"
Clementine raised an eyebrow. "Hm? At what?"
"The back room. The boxes of clothing."
"Why?"
Luke gave a small chuckle. "Cause we might need some along the way. You never know." One of his eyebrows peeled upwards as he glanced down at the girl, tilting his head in interest as he awaited her response. "So, are you in?"
After studying the male's odd pose for a moment, she nodded. "Yeah, might as well."
Patting her back sweetly and guiding her away, the male gave a small wave to their friends and gestured to where they were going. In times like these, it was good to keep tabs on people.
Stepping into the concrete room the male's eyes instantly widened. It was odd, the room was compete concrete and yet it seemed so bright and colourful. The large boxes were strewn around the room, some open and popping with brightly coloured attire. While the walls were a plain grey, the rest of the room was dancing with radiance before of the fabric tossed everywhere. Even thought the room was trashed, it seemed like a colidascope of beauty.
"Wow." He breathed. "We have a lot of stuff to sort through." Making his way towards one of the large stacks of boxes, he tugged one from the very top off the shelf and ripped it open against the floor to begin sorting through. He tugged out a few shirts and jeans, including a leather belt that he personally found interesting. But the thing that really caught his eye was the fresh pair of blue jeans and a light blue long-sleeve shirt resting at the bottom.
The male gave a side-glance over to the girl who was busy organizing one of the smaller stacks. In a split second decision he stood and walked over to her, holding out the armful of fabric.
The child blinked in surprise, glancing back up at the male. "What's this?"
"New clothes. They look like your size, you should try them on."
Clementine gave a skeptical gaze, her eyes shifting back down to the shades of blue and running her fingers along the arms of the shirt. "Uhm..."
"Just trying them on won't hurt. If you don't like 'em, I'll toss them back. I promise."
His reassuring promise caused the female to give a small smile. "Yeah, okay." She said softly, rubbing the back of her neck shyly. "I'll go try."
"There's a small bathroom across the hall." He assured, patting her back in comfort. "I'll be waiting here."
As the girl stood and vanished through the archway, Luke smiled and watched her click the bathroom door closed behind her. She really did seem to be growing up quick, and the little moments where he could just sit and talk to her made it all worthwhile. Clementine was still here, and that's all that mattered to him. She was there, with him, and that's all he cared about.
Luke sauntered forwards and leaned against the small doorframe of the storage room, hands in his pockets and eyes drifting back and forth as he patiently awaited for his little girl to emerge.
Hearing the satisfying click of the door seeping open after a while, the male watched with a sweet smile as she stepped out in the new clothing perfectly wrapped around her body. "Well hey!" He teased playfully, smirking and kneeling to her level.
"It's actually nice. A little big, but it's warm and comfy."
Luke nodded, placing a hand against the young girls head. As his palm made contact with her hair, a sudden thought dawned onto him. "Oh, right! Gimme one sec."
Turning back into the room, he popped open one of the boxes at the top of his pile and tugged out a medium sized, army green shaded jacket.
"Try this on for size." Kneeling back down to her level, he threw the fabric over her shoulders and watched as she slipped her arms in and through. "I think it looks good on you, Clem." He commented, tapping her hat in affection as he often did with the girl. It was just a small reminder of how much he loved her.
Turning to see herself in the mirror, she adjusted her jacket with a smile, tilting her head and hat to get a better look at herself.
As she did so, Luke couldn't help but crack a grin. Her clothes were still slightly too big but she seemed to love them all the same. It just reminded him that she wasn't entirely grown up yet, she still had a child left in her and still got to do younger things like wearing coats and hats that were a size too big.
She may not have seemed like a little girl, but deep down Luke's little Clementine would always be his.
