They hadn't reached the ski lodge that long ago, but already the gang seemed to be making themselves right at home. Except for one, of course. Out of their entire group, only one was refusing to socialize with their new allies.Nick.
Of course, Clementine couldn't blame him. Watching the way he stared absentmindedly into the fire was reason enough to tell her everything she needed to.
He was terrified of himself and of what he could do. That, at the very least, they had in common.
He had looked so horrified staring down at his gun. The way it fell limply out of his hands as the struggling victim gurgled on his own blood, struggling off of the bridge and into the frigid water below. She remembered the screams of their team, baffled at his actions and pleading for him to set the gun down, only screeching in agony when it was too late. It all had rolled out like a horror movie. For Nick, she couldn't imagine the pain he was bathing in.
"Leave him be, Clem." Clementine turned, brows furrowed in confusion as Luke manifested behind her, his voice soft and gentle.
Was she really that transparent that he knew exactly what she was thinking?
"Why should I?"
"He's dealing with a lot." He countered, crossing his arms. His voice remained soft and quiet, hoping that if they kept their voices down the child wouldn't be able to hear them over the crackling of the fire he sat right in front of. "He just needs some thinking time."
Clementine's brows relaxed, although frustration still jostled its way through her veins. "I think leaving him to his thoughts is dangerous."
Luke's arms crossed before his chest, a flicker of confusion passing through him. "Why's that?"
Clem's gaze softened to one of pity rather than desperate curiosity. "His thoughts will be rougher on him than any of us ever could be." She remained silent, her body shifting with her gaze to fixate on Luke. Clem finally managed to capture the gaze Luke gave towards the child; one of sorrow rather than frustration. "No matter how much Rebecca's yells at him or Carlos scolds him, they can't compare to how rough he's being on himself."
Luke glanced down, his eyes demonstrating a pinch of unsureness. "How do you know all this?"
Clem's brows fell, sorrow flashing across them. She returned to staring at the young boy, his head now downcast to study the fingers which had shot a man. "Experience."
Luke grew quiet, his expression falling even more so suddenly understanding exactly where her knowledge stemmed from. "Then maybe you should go talk with him."
Silently, she gave a nod and started forwards, venturing closer to the fellow child in the room. It wasn't until she was right beside him did she speak as softly and gingerly as possible, not wanting to startle him.
"Hi Nick,"
Instead of a response, she was greeted with silence.
With a slight frown at his lack of reaction, Clementine eased herself onto the floor and stared into the fireplace, feeling his gaze drift to the same place.
"What do you want?" His voice, while direct, wasn't bitter or harsh. His words were laced with confusion and concern. Even regret that he had made himself noticeably distressed to a point that she came over.
