Clementine and Luke
I will never stop writing these. No regrets.
This one is when Clementine gets sick and Luke is taking care of her, as requested by shslshipperofeverything and so I decided to give it a shot! Hope you all enjoy!Luke was thrown awake by a startling sound.
A sneeze.
He glanced around his dark room, his eyes squinting as they made contact with a window blind that was open ever-so-slightly, causing one beam of sun to land against his eye. It must have been around six am for the sun to be that interesting shade of orange. There was another tiny sneeze that bounded off the walls, finally giving Luke the energy to sit up against his bed. “Clementine?” He called softly into the dark room. Because there was very limited beds and very limited space, Luke and Clementine were forced to share a room. Neither of them minded, they were both pretty close after all.
“Yeah?” Her weak voice called out, sounding almost plugged.
A small pang of worry arose in his chest as she propelled himself from his bed and threw himself to the base of the other.
“Clem, are you alright?” Before he waited for an answer, his hand slid on top of her forehead causing a rise of panic to fill his voice. “Oh gosh Clem…” Luke whispered in awe.
“What? Is something wrong?” She asked, just above a whisper.
“Clem, you’re forehead’s burning up.” Luke said softly, biting his lip in worry.
Without waiting a beat, Luke threw himself out of the bedroom and dashed down the stairs and towards the kitchen. Kenny raised an eyebrow from where he was seated as Luke rustled around in the adjoining room before emerging with an armful of supplies.
“Woah!” Kenny commented with a small awkward laugh. “Got enough stuff?”
“It’s for Clem.” Luke’s tone was rather stern and harsh as he continued for the stairs, not even stopping for a minute to explain. He had a place to go and he had a little girl to take care of.
“Clementine?” Kenny asked, worry coating his voice as he stood, ready to follow at any moment.
“She’s under the weather.” He claimed, wobbling up the stairs as he made a mad dash for the door to their room, Kenny now right behind him.
“Clem, I need you to look up.” Luke said softly, gently rolling her over so her face was exposed to the two of them.
“I’ll go put on something for her to eat.” Kenny said, dashing out of the room again.
“Luke…” Clem whimpered, feeling him place a cool washcloth over her forehead.
“Shh.” He said softly. He quickly grabbed two painkillers and a bottle of water and handed them to her. It took him a while to track down the medicine in their kitchen, and was aware that some of the others may be upset that he had taken so much, but he couldn’t help it. He needed to make sure Clem was feeling better even slightly. She was his number 1 priority 24/7. “Look, Kenny’s making you something to eat, ok?”
Clementine’s eyes folded shut again, quickly taking the medication she was given and placed the water bottle back on the floor once she was done. “I feel awful.” She whined, scrunching her face in disapproval.
“You’re gunna be ok, kiddo.” He said, forcing a tiny smile. “I promise.”
They sat silently for a few minutes, Luke occasionally brushing hair away from her eyes as she attempted to get some rest, watching as her body tried to desperately fight off the cold she was given. “Out of anyone, why did it have to be you…” He whispered to himself, watching as she breathed unevenly in her sleep.
Upon hearing a gentle knock on the door, Luke opened it to reveal Kenny holding a steaming bowl of soup. “Took me a while to track one down, but I found one. This is the only one we’ve got.” Luke gave a small smile and held a finger up to his mouth. Kenny frowned slightly and nodded, stepping past him and into the room.
“Any of the others awake?”
“Not yet.” Kenny replied, kneeling at the young girls bedside. Luke instinctively sat on the edge of her bed, watching over Clem as she slept soundly. He couldn’t help but feel protective, he didn’t want anyone to disturb her in the process to getting better.
Just as the thought flew through his mind, a sudden slamming door caused Clementine to jolt awake. “Nick…” Luke grumbled under his breath. Upon hearing the name, Kenny scowled. “Please go tell him to shut up and keep it down.” He growled under his breath, carefully seating himself beside Clementine and taking the bowl from Kenny’s hands.
“Gladly.” Kenny claimed with a small smirk, quietly exiting the room.
“Why don’t you go and tell Nick to shut up?” Clementine groggily asked, eyeing him and the food in his hands.
“Because, I’m taking care of you today. I’m not worrying about anyone or anything else.”
“What about yourself?” She asked as Luke scooped up some of the hot liquid and brought it to her lips, causing her to gladly took a sip.
“That’s last on my priorities today.” He said with a small chuckle.
After easily finishing her soup, she leaned back with a small cough. “I can sleep all day today, right?” She double checked, opening one eye to see Luke’s body protectively leaning over her.
Luke chucked. “Of course you can.” They sat in silence for a while before Luke spoke again upon seeing her struggle to fall asleep once more. “I used to sing you know. Before all this happened.”
“You mean, before the walkers?”
“Yep. I wasn’t professional or anything. It was just something I used to do.”
“Do you mind singing to me?” She asked, her scruffy, tired voice becoming more apparent with every passing second. However, it didn’t stop her curiosity.
“Of course, kiddo.” Luke cleared his throat before starting to sing ‘Safe and Sound’. “Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. You’ll be alright, no one can hurt you now…”
About halfway through the song, he could see she had finally fallen asleep.
“Goodnight, Clem.” He said softly, tucking some hair behind her ear.
He refused to leave her bedside all day. At one point, Kenny went back upstairs to check on the two. Once he creaked the door open, he studied carefully what he could see through the darkness of the room.
Luke’s head resting against the side of Clementine’s bed where he had been hours before, both in a peaceful slumber.
“He’s not leaving there anytime soon, that’s for sure.” Kenny said with a small smirk.
