They had been walking for days. While her feet ached, the hope of Wellington, of safety, of comfort, was enough to push Clementine to continue with each step. Each stride was another one closer to, hopefully, the rest of her life lived in safety. One could only hope. The least she could do for little AJ was take him someplace where he could grow up.
But suddenly, as if a miracle blessed upon them, they saw it.
In the distance, as they reached the peak of a hill in their wooded path, stood the large gated community.
Wellington. Home. At least, they hoped.
"Beautiful." Kenny breathed, his voice so faint it almost didn't register to the wide-eyed child beside him. She she heard it. If not she would have been able to pick it up by the feeling of hopefulness in the air.
Then they started closer, her feet stung beneath her but Clem didn't care. It was before her, so close she could taste the warmth and security. Each step seemed more comfortable than the last. They could both finally feel home free.
"Stop at the gate."
They jumped back, a voice startling them. Despite the terror that briefly surged through their veins, they obeyed.
Footsteps echoed against the wooden surface before them, their eyes scanning the wall with intrigue. The effort that went into building the haven was the same amount of effort that went into getting there. But the stress was over, they had finally made it.
"Wow,"
Clementine's expression didn't chance despite recognizing the intimidating voice. She couldn't tell if it was because of the numbing shock or the awe of the building, but she was speechless.
"Lily?"
Clearly, however, Kenny wasn't.
She chuckled. "I never thought I would see you guys around again." Lily shrugged, positioning her feet shoulder width apart. "What a surprise." Clem could sense a hint of bitterness in her tone but would never dare point it out.
"What are you doing in Wellington?"
"I should be asking you that question seeing as though I'm inside." She retorted, crossing her arms. "Wellington is my turf. What are you doing here?"
Maybe she had distain to talk to people who weren't already a part of Wellington. Or maybe it was a distain for the idea that they two of them were still alive without her help. But something, something about their presence agitated her greatly.
"What everyone else is coming here for; to get some safety." Despite the way his fists were balled up at his sides, Kenny's voice remained calm. That Clementine appreciated. Everyone knew the two of them didn't leave on good terms.
"Well I have some bad news for you guys. It's not happening." Lily retorted, fingers clinking the pole in front of her.
"What?" Kenny's eyes squinted. Clem silently prayed he would remain calm. The last thing they needed was yet another Lily versus Kenny battle.
A rope flew down from the metal railing as Lily easily slid her way down with ease. She rubbed her hands together upon hitting the bottom, ropes agitating her skin.
So that's what she was doing with the railing.
"I said you aren't getting in." She growled, drawing closer. "Wellington doesn't like murderers."
Kenny scoffed. "I hate to break it to ya but I'm afraid you have a majority of killers in there." He crossed his arms bitterly. "You need to kill in today's world, Lily."
"Not humans." Lily spat. "Walker killers, of course we have. But we don't like having risks like you inside our establishment."
"Oh come on!" Kenny snapped, leering forwards at her. "I know you're still pissed about your Dad but we didn't have a choice, Lily. You think I wanted to do that? You think I got some kind of," He flailed his arms - he did that whenever he got worked up. "Sick joy out of it? I didn't. It's what needed to be done."
Swiftly, without reaction, Lily decked Kenny in the face right against his bandages, watching him as he reeled back from the hit. Before Clementine could beg her to stop she had kicked in one of his legs and had him flat on his back.
Kenny couldn't fight back, he could hardly get back up. As he was busy coughing and spluttered swears Lily drew a gun from her back pocket and aimed it square at his forehead. "Yeah well, so does this."
Clementine stood in shock while Kenny used his good eye to glare upwards. "Lil-"
"Guess what, Kenny? I don't know if you care but after you guys abandoned me on the side of the road, things got kinda tough for me." She groaned. "Watching your Dad get murdered right in front of you doesn't do a lot of good for your mental health, you know."
"Lily, stop!" Clementine begged, reaching forwards only for Lily to shoot her a death glare.
"I need to do this, Clementine. Back. Away."
Clementine glanced back and forth from the enraged Lily to the crippled Kenny and felt her mind churn. What was she supposed to do? Taking any sort of action could lead to one or all of them being killed. But not doing anything meant Kenny was sure to die. She chewed on her lower lip before stepping forwards swiftly, not wanting to hesitate and lose any time. Or a life.
"You are NOT killing him." Clementine spat back, taking her position in front of her gun. Kenny loomed behind her, holding the injured half of his head in agony.
"Back away, Clementine. This doesn't involve you."
"You're going to kill the only person I have left?" Clementine yelled, hugging AJ closer to her chest. How was she supposed to take care of the him alone? Without Kenny they could die easily. She didn't know how to take care of a baby. Let alone in the world they were living in. "You think that doesn't affect me?!" She was screaming at this point, she was well aware. She needed to do something drastic, Lily needed to see her side. Lily needed to BE on her side. "You think that this will make anything better?!"
Lily's hand flattered, lowering slowly as Clementine spoke. It wasn't the misty eyed look or the clinging to he child in her arms. It wasn't Clem's chest being pressed against her gun or the way her body loomed over Kenny's.
No, it was her voice.
Her words.
Those were the same words she wished she could have yelled at Kenny the night her father's death. The way she felt. The way that she knew her father felt. They were all the other had left.
She had been bitter for years over what Kenny had done to her family and all she had ever wanted was the revenge her mind longed for. But like this? Repeating the mistakes she detested so much? Was it going to help her in anyway? Or would it only add to her hatred she felt for not doing more that night?
The two stood, Clementine cautiously helping Kenny to his feet. She balanced AJ in one hand as his innocent eyes grazed Lily's for the first time. Provoking her hand to loosen its tight grip against her gun.
After a brief nudge from Clementine to continue walking, the trio started into the crunching snow with Kenny's hand on Clementine's shoulder.
"Wait." Lily called called her hands falling against her sides. The gate squealed behind the two as their footsteps slid to a halt.
"Come on in."
