“Sarah, you gotta sit at some point.” Nick grumbled, furrowing his brow as he watched the young teen pace back and forth nervously.
“No, I-I’m okay…” Sarah mumbled softly.
Nick rolled his eyes, taking another swing of the homemade alcohol he had found and sat the half-empty jar on the ground. “Sarah.” He grumbled sternly, flashing a harsh glare at the clearly shaken girl. Watching her gaze shift to his own, her eyes glazed over with a blanket of fear, his expression and tone softened. “Come on and just sit. Okay?” The male sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck before sitting against the log he was on previously.
A brief moment of silence passed over the two before Sarah finally eased onto her wooden chair and sighed as she attempted to relax her tense muscles more. Logs were in no way as comfortable chairs, but she had to make do. She had no other choice.
“What do you think they’re talking about?” Nick grumbled, gesturing his jar of alcohol towards the remainder of their small group, whispering and huddled just off to the side of the two.
“They’re probably trying to figure out what to do about the remainder of our group.” She commented with a small sigh. “We did lose a lot of people back there.” Her heart gave a small pang of sorrow as she thought back to the memory of loosing her father. The world was an unforgiving place now, even the good and innocent were killed.
The girl shivered behind her red lenses, fear consuming her body once more as the horrid memories flashed before her eyes. Oh how much she desperately wanted to rid them from her vision. Forever.
Nick glanced over with an uncomfortable gaze. How does he go about doing this? He had never really been one to comfort others, hell he never really needed comforting himself. He normally just went off and did his own thing, which normally consisted of drinking a large amount of alcohol, wallowing and self-regret, and then he carried on. “Don’t freak out too much okay? It’ll work out alright.”
He hoped. He wasn’t too good at this comforting thing.
“Okay, Nick.” She stated solemnly. While the female normally didn’t believe statements like that, this time a part of her did. It was a crazy world she had been tossed into, and even the smallest glimmer of hope at the moment just opened her eyes to even more. She needed to believe in something—anything to keep her going.
“Sarah,” Nick started with a small groan, placing a hand against the girls shaking frame. “Don’t freak out, okay? You worry everyone when you do.” He sighed, turning away from the girl. He didn’t want to freak her out too much with his speech. “Especially me…”
Even though Nick and Sarah didn’t have a truly strong bond, he still did care for her. He had lost so much in his life and so had she, that was something they could bond and grow over. They were all the other had, and they needed to stick together. If not, eventually they would both be alone in the world.
Hearing the male’s words, Sarah’s eyes widened. He cared for her? She couldn’t help but allow the small smile creeping up upon her face to show. It had been far too long since she felt a sense of love, and two simple words gave her that feeling again. Her body shifted slightly closer to the male, comfort and warmth wrapped around her like at blanket at the sweet comment.
“Do you think we’ll be okay, Nick?” She asked quietly, glancing around at their group. Nick was the one person in the group she get like she could honestly trust, so any questions she had she was going to ask him.
Her hesitant tone caused the male to glance at her sideways, raising an eyebrow. “Of course we’ll be okay.”
“But how do you know?” She asked cautiously. She trained that Nick would give her a truthful answer. “So many bad things have happened recently I…” She paused. The dead silence grabbed all of the male’s attention. He worried about her mental health when she was in this state. Especially when she went quiet. “I don’t think things will ever get better.”
Nick sighed, shifting closer to the girl and hesitantly placing a hand against her shoulder. He wasn’t used to the physical contact they were sharing, and neither was Sarah based off of her physical flinch.
“I can’t promise that the world will go back to what it once was. But, I can promise you, I swear this on my life, that we’ll be okay. We aren’t leaving each other’s sides. If we stick together, we can make it.”
She blinked in surprise. She wasn’t expecting the outburst from the normally mono-tone quiet male.
“I swear Sarah, I won’t let anything happen to you. Not on my life.”
Silence drifted between the two once more as Sarah the processed the words spoken to her.
“I’ll do the same for you, Nick.”
He gave a small smirk, nudging her shoulder playfully as he pulled away and returned to his normal sitting position. “We have a deal then. We look out for each other no matter what. Deal?”
“Yeah, we have a deal.” The girl extended her pinky out to him, a playful smile against her normally sorrowful features.
With a small chuckle, the male wrapped his own pinky around her slim one.
Maybe he was better at comforting than he thought.
