"Clementine, take AJ inside."

The words, while intended to come off as sickly sweet, only smacked the child's ears with a sense of bitterness. "No, I'm going to help."

"Clem," his voice was daunting, as if challenging her to face the consequences of her actions if she dared step in where it wasn't warranted. "I said get inside. Don't challenge me on this."

Clementine forced back the urge to roll her eyes at such a claim. Once again, Kenny had to play the hero. He couldn't accept that she was old enough to not only hold her own, but also to defend their family. Clementine, while a child, held more firepower than almost any adult they had ever met.

Well, almost any adult. There was an exception. That exception was held especially relevant today.

Maybe that was what forced Clementine to sweep AJ into her arms, setting him inside their small cabin and securing the door closed with a wrench. Maybe it was what gave her the fire to remain outside, clutching her axe with such relentlessness. Maybe it was what gave her the edge to speak.

"Not today. I'm fighting."

It wasn't difficult to see the swarm gradually closing in, cornering their lot perfectly. With Kenny at her side, Clem knew she had nothing to fear. But when it was 8 walkers vs. an injured man, a kid, and a toddler, the playing field grew uneven quite fast.

Leaping into action, Clementine swung her axe towards a walker looming dangerously close to Kenny's blind side, chopping her axe perfectly through the side of its head and kicking its chest to the ground.

"Clementine!" The voice was harsh and challenging, but the child didn't care. She knew what she needed to do. If she didn't risk it, Kenny would be a goner.

"I'll get the rest on this side, you get those over there."

"Where's AJ?" He scoffed, jamming a screwdriver through the ear of the walker nearest to him, kicking it backwards and allowing it to tumble and crush the one following close behind it. With ease, he jammed the screwdriver through its empty eye socket, then turning his attention to the other two left to take on.

"In the cabin." Clementine called mid thrust as she jammed her axe into the forehead of a walker. Feeling one looming behind her, she whipped around and socked it in the throat, leaving it to sputter in surprise before she delivered the final blow to the side of it's head.

"Go inside with him!" Kenny demand, spiking down yet another one at his side.

"No!" Clementine spat in response, not wanting to be too loud and potentially draw more. Kicking the body still stuck on her axe, she managed to knock down the final walker on her side, killing it with swift ease.

With a grunt, she could hear a faint sputter and grumble from the opposing side of the site. Then, and only then, did she know the task was done. For now, once again, they were safe.

Taking deep breaths, Clementine stuffed her axe back into her pocket, wiping her forehead with the back of a dirtied hand and turning to see if Kenny was stable.

Instead, she was greeted with a harsh glare, one that could melt icebergs, yet it sent a cold shiver down the child's spine instead. "They're gone." She began, hoping to ease the tension settling in the air. "We're safe for now."
