"Is this seriously the only way over?" Kenny grumbled, his knuckles turning white as he continued his death grip against his backpack's shoulder strap.
Luke sighed and rubbed the back of his head. As much as he didn't want to get on the male's bad side, knowing that they didn't exactly have a kind relationship, he knew that this was the only pathway they could take. "We need to take this one. This is the only way."
"We could walk around." Kenny growled, gesturing one of his battered hands around the outskirts of the lake.
"But that would take so much longer." Bonnie breathed, more to herself than to anyone despite the fact that their crew had heard. "It looks like we're just going to need to walk over."
Kenny snarled. "You're all mental."
"Well we're alive and I'd like to stay that way, thank you very much." Luke snapped back. He hadn't intended for it to be so harsh but it seemed to be the only way his mind could formulate at the time. He blinked, surprised by himself, and glanced around their small group rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly as all eyes landed on him; Kenny's more irritated than shocked. "Look, so long as we're careful we can make it over perfectly fine. Okay?"
Kenny rolled his eyes and started forwards, stopping at the very edge of the lake, his toes brushing against the edge of the ice wall.
"We're going to need to spread out. I have no idea how thin this is so we need to be extra cautious." Bonnie stated as she leaned down to examine their walk way. She wasn't going to risk puncturing a hole in the ice to see so she slowly returned back to her normal standing position.
"Clem, you go first." Jane said with a small nod.
"W-Why me?" The child asked, golden eyes wide with misunderstanding.
"Yeah, why her?" Kenny and Luke glanced back at each other in shock as they spoke in sync, but quickly returned their gaze to the grumpy woman.
Jane rolled her eyes. "Well she's the smallest and the lightest. If she goes first there's less of a chance of the ice breaking then if she goes behind all of us. It's basic risk assessment."
Bonny squinted harshly at the woman before turning towards the ice sheet before them. "Okay then, Clem. Looks like you're up."
"Jeez, you guys really are mental." Kenny snarled. "Are you seriously going to make her go first? Is this actually 'risk assessment'," He began making quotation marks with his hands. "Or are 'yall just trying to see if the ice is thin enough to get across? Either way, I ain't having it."
"I agree." The statement gave a jolt to the group as Luke stepped forwards. The two enemies finally coming to an agreement on one thing. "She shouldn't have to go first. Kenny and I will go. She can follow behind."
"Now that's mental." Jane spurted back. "What happens if the ice breaks with you two? Look who's right behind you to take the fall."
Clementine flinched as Jane pointed her way, only to get a reassuring smile from Luke to calm her nerves. "It's fine. She'll be following far enough back that she won't be affected."
Jane rolled her eyes and took a step back, awaiting the men to put their plan into action.
Carefully and hesitantly the two started out onto the ice, spacing themselves out enough so that little of their weight was on the same spot. "Okay, send Clem." Luke called back once they had made fair distance over the ice.
Bonny gently took hold of Clementine shoulder and back, helping her out onto the ice and releasing as she had fumbled forwards on her own. "Please be careful." She breathed quietly.
After several minutes of hesitation and nervous first footsteps, the group was finally all out on the icy platform wandering hesitantly down towards their dream destination; the run down abandoned housing unit. It seemed as if it was a walk that would take an eternity. They needed to move in such slow and sluggish movements it seemed impossible to ever make it there before dark.
Creaaaaak.
Clementine slowly turned to look back, watching as Luke was paralyzed in horror as the ice around his feet begin to crack under the weight around it,
"Luke!" Clem cried nervously, taking a step towards him.
"Stop! Clem! Don't come closer. I'll be okay, okay? Keep going." His voice wavered. His voice never wavered.
"But Luke--"
"Just go!"
Clem flinched at the desperation in his voice, slowly turning away and continuing her pathway. "You need to help him." She begged as she scurried forwards, attempting to keep her distance from the red-head she was calling to.
Bonnie glanced back towards the male. His eyes seem to gather the entire day lit sky inside of them as they swelled to an overwhelming size.
Snnnnnnap!
Clementine whirled around in just enough time to see the ice whimper in defeat and give way underneath the male's feet, the water wrapping itself around his leg and tugging it under the icy depths.
"Okay! O-Okay." He cried out in shock, his voice wavering in uncertainty like the waves that wailed around his limb.
"Bonnie! Help him!"
"Clem, keep walking!" Clementine could hear Jane's demanding voice calling from behind her as she began her long wide turn around shattering ice. Of course, attempting to keep herself out of harms way.
"Bonnie, I'm not leaving until we find a way to help him!"
The two met a gaze for a brief moment, sharing in something that could only be described as a common bond. They both cared a great deal for the male resting before them, and they were going to assured that he got out safely. Bonnie knew for certain that Luke felt the same way about the child. He would do anything for her to ensure her safety. And now they could make it up to him and return the favour.
"Okay, Clem. We can do this." She said softly, attempting to calm the frazzled nerves of the trio. "Everyone else keep walking, we got this. We can't afford to break more ice." The red-hair cried out to their group before them, drawing closer to their temporary home.
"Just be careful. Don't fall in."
"That's the plan." Bonnie grumbled to herself, adjusting her belt and sliding it out from the loops around her waist.
Luke frowned slightly at the sassiness in her tone, but remained silent. The last thing he needed to do was to gigs attitude to the woman saving him.
"Okay, just grab onto this and I'll try and tug you out. I don't want to get close if I don't have to."
Luke nodded and attached one of his pale, frozen hands onto the metal clasp of the leather material. Slowly, Bonnie began taking steps backwards, skidding hesitantly on the ice. "You're going to need to try and tug your leg out."
Luke nodded, groaning in pain as his leg slowly began to surface itself. Drops of crimson painted the icy surface as the frozen limb began to hover above the liquid, exposing the large gash against his leg.
Clementine frowned. "The ice." She whispered to herself. Luckily the male had no feeling in the leg, so the wound didn't faze him.
"Go! Push up!"
With a gentle slap of water to surface contact, Clementine's nervous eyes opened to expose a pale, damp Luke resting aimlessly against the rickety ground. Tired, weak, but out of the water.
"Oh thank god!" Bonnie cried happily, letting go of her end of the belt and sighing happily, closing her eyes in utter joy. They had somehow, in all of their miracles, had been able to get him out without breaking any more ice.
"Ugh." The male groaned, shaking his head as the blood slowly began to return to his senses. "Well then. Keep on trucking?" He asked with a smirk.
Bonnie rolled her eyes. "Maybe take it a little slower there this time."
"Please." Clementine said with a nod, her gaze serious but with a gentle smile curling against the corners.
Luke nodded. "Of course. I can't go too fast with this leg here anyway." He swayed it back and forth, allowing the limp limb to dance along the slippery ice floor. But no matter what the injury, no matter what the cost, he was still there.
Hopefully, he would continue to be there for a long while.
