"No. No no no no no." Kenny's quick, muttered, soft breaths pushed Clementine over the edge of worry that she was already standing on the edge of.
"Kenny-"
"God damn! No no no..."
"Kenny!"
Despite her calls pleading for the male to turn his attention to her, he was in his own little world. Kenny had started forwards through the thick, harsh forest, desperately searching for a clearing of some sort for all of them to rest in.
As they were wandering searching for an opening, Clementine's golden eyes studied the small drops of blood that fell from AJ's arm down onto Kenny's coat. A frown graced the teenagers lips as she tore through the brush following directly behind the duo. Never in her greatest nightmare had she ever dreamed of such a thing. Their little AJ, who they had promised to take care of, being bitten.
It happened so quickly. The three of them were stepping outside of their little shack they had found to go and look for food. Kenny had wanted to leave AJ behind but worried about bandits attempting to kill him, so he requested that the child come along.
It happened so quickly. To Clementine that was the most horrifying part.
AJ was reaching for a dead bird he had shot when a pair of teeth reached out and latched onto the poor boy's flesh. And in a split second, it was done.
He was infected.
"This can't be happening..." Kenny pleaded, resting the boy against a nearby rock and examining the arm. "O-Okay, okay, this is fine. If we take off the arm now maybe the infection won't sink in and he'll be fine."
"Kenny!" Clementine scolded, crossing her arms. As the years had gone by Clementine had aged hard. In a world like this it was a need to grow up fast in order to have any hope of staying alive, and her innocence and trust of the human race had been dashed early on in her life. She grew up in a world where she needed to run and kill everything that she didn't love. No matter what.
But now, it seemed like even that rule would need to be broken. Everyone, everything, needed to be killed. Loved or not.
"What?" Kenny asked weakly. He glanced up, tears streaking his dirty cheeks. Clementine, for a brief moment, flashed back to when they were all still together and well. Kenny, Lee, and herself. She remembered watching her two adult figures return in shambles as they sat down without a word against the old train they had found. The face that Kenny had then sitting down in silence, was the same expression he had now. That fact alone was heart-shattering.
"We can't amputate him."
"Why not? It's the only chance we got! We might as well take it."
"He's too young! He can't live without an arm!"
"Would you rather have him not live at all?!"
Clementine took a step back from Kenny's sudden outburst. His grip against the knife in his pocket tightened, his eyes growing more and more menacing every moment. "We need to do this."
"Kenny, we--"
"We need to! Don't argue with me!" At this point Kenny's voice was booming to the very tip of the forest trees. Deep in her heart the golden-eyed girl knew that the noise would attack walkers, but at the moment that didn't seem to be very important. It was the least of their worries.
Kenny was kneeling down before the half-conscious boy, cleaning his knife blade and sighing, his palms shaking as he attempted to do so.
Closer. Closer. The blade was practically brushing against the pale green-tinged skin. AJ's breathing slowed, his body desperately attempting to fight whatever was swarming in his veins.
Closer.
Clementine glanced away. AJ was hardly conscious but she knew that he would feel immense pain as his arm was severed from his body. He would scream, yell, cry. Her golden eyes teared over at the thought. She loved him so much she couldn't bear to sit in the same room as a limb was torn away from his body.
Pressing against his skin.
Hesitation.
Silence.
"I can't do it."
Clementine glanced back to see the blade resting beside the elder's leg. His hands were planted in the dirt and his head was lowered against the young boy's lap.
Clementine remained silent, studying the scene and listening to the gentle weeps of her guardian and the small breaths of the child. Kenny was always so strong, seeing him in tears was enough to break her heart.
"He's not going to make it, Clem." He coughed and sputtered. "What the hell am I thinking...it's been to long. It's already set in. I mean look at him!"
Clementine continued to remain silent but nodded. Her own tears were resting on the rims of her eyes. But at a time like this, especially with Kenny, he needed someone to try and be strong. Even if it was fake strength. Even if she was shattering from the inside out.
"What do we do now, Clem?"
She hesitated. They were both thinking it. But it was what nobody in their right mind ever wanted to say. "Kenny, we..."
He glanced up, tear stained cheeks and all. Clem leaned forwards in pain from the pang in her chest. Her heart felt as if it was trying to claw its way out of her chest, scratching her inner walls begging to escape from the situation.
"We can't let him turn."
"I'm not doing it Clem, I..." He shook his head, lowering his head into his hands. "I couldn't do it then...and I...I..."
"I'll do it, Kenny." She breathed. The words tastes bitter on her tongue. The words she never wanted to say. She would give anything to let someone else take the gun from her belt and do it for her. AJ was like a brother to her, her own child at some points, and she couldn't bear to be the one to end the life that had made her so happy.
Kenny was silent, nodding and pushing himself to his feet using his knees for support. He took a slight step behind the female, placing a hand on her shoulder for a moment before closing his eyes and turning his gaze to the floor. His legs shook, his arms were weak and numb, he was silent.
This was it.
Shaking madly the teen lifted the gun from her back pocket, her finger hesitantly resting on the trigger. They both stared at the sad little boy with desperation longing on their eyes.
He had no idea.
Once he was bitten he had passed out from the terror and shock of it all. And as he had come-to the bite had already began taking its existing toll on his body. He had no idea what hit him.
"I'm sorry, AJ." Clem whispered, voice wavering madly as she toyed with her weapon in her sweaty palms. "We're doing this because we love you."
Kenny remained silent. Waterfalls of silent tears streaming down his cheeks.
Her hand slowly lifted as she aimed her shot right at the young boy's forehead.
"Goodbye, AJ." She breathed. Her eyes sealed themselves shut and turned away. "We love you."
Her finger slammed down on the trigger, shooting and shattering the quiet forest air.
Then a bloodcurdling scream of a teenage girl.
Then silence.
