Clementine, Luke and Lee

This was suggested by juliaaaaaaaaaaaaisssssmeeee and Anonymous. Clementine finds Lee roaming the streets in an un-dead state, sending her into a panic attack. Luke then needs to find a way to help calm the young girl down.

"Guys, we need to leave. Now." Luke scolded, one hand gently on Clementine’s back as he pushed her forwards and down a small ragged path.
The gang had finally escaped Carver and were wandering down an old town street trying to find a place to camp out for the night. They had been on the move for almost a week and half now and Luke wanted to keep the group on foot if they had any chance of surviving walkers and outrunning Carver.
Clementine’s eyes squinted as they finally hit solid pavement, causing the group to glance around them in wonder.
“Where are we?” Kenny asked, adjusting a bag on his back.
Clementine took a few steps forwards, brushing away from the others and stepping in front of Luke as she glanced around. “I kind of recognize this place…” She said under her breath, glancing around the destroyed street in search of something to help jog her memory.
“Well keep thinking, kiddo. We gotta keep moving if we wanna live to see daylight. It’s gunna get dark soon.” As he spoke, Luke’s eyes drifted to the sun that was already descending causing the sky to grow a shade of bright orange with pink splashes here and there.
The farther they walked however, the more Clementine couldn’t help but wonder why she had seen this place before. It was definitely in bad shape, probably the worst out of everything she had seen. Walkers were around almost every corner, causing her and the others to jump back and forth between hiding spots.
Luke quickly stabbed a walker in the head before continuing down the street, kicking the rotten body out of the way. “I’m sure at least one of these houses has gotta be unlocked. We can stay there for the night.” He said, turning back to Clem for approval. Clementine gave him a nod of approval and a small smile. The grin quickly faded when a deep growl came into earshot.
“Damn. More?” Luke asked, angrily grabbing the knife out of his back pocket. Clementine glanced all around with her hammer in hand as she searched carefully. Hearing the noise over her right shoulder she flipped around and froze. Her body couldn’t move. Her mouth went dry, her legs felt like lead, her shoulders felt as if a thousand weights had fallen upon them.
It was Lee.
As a walker.
“No…” Her voice came out hoarse as the hammer fell out her hand and landed on the pavement with a clatter. “No…” She said again. He continued to grow closer, his slow steps taunting her.
Why was he here? How did he get here? She didn’t understand how he had broken free from the radiator in the police station and someone managed to roam the streets again.
“Clem!” She could feel a pair of arms wrap themselves around her waist and hoist her from the ground. “What’s wrong with you, Clem?!” Luke asked urgently, setting her down next to a building away from the action. “Are you alright? What happened out there?!”
Clem’s eyes refused to meet his however, they were too busy staring at Lee. He became one of them.
One of them.
Clementine could feel her hands ball into fists as she turned to the male in front of her. “I’m fine.” She growled, dashing back out onto the street and sliding on the pavement to reach her hammer.
With a small cry of anger, she slammed her hammer into the head of a teenage girl and kicked her in the stomach to get her off her weapon. With another swung she nailed an older man right in the head, causing a spurt of blood to fly out as his lifeless body fell to the ground.
“You became one of them!” She screamed in anger, single-handedly knocking two adults to the ground and stabbing them with her hammer.
Kenny was in a much calmer state, watching as his old friend hobbled closer to him. Quickly, he pushed the others away, being careful to not injure Lee in any way.
Finally killing all the walkers in the area, Kenny placed a hand on Clem’s back and pushed her forwards. “Let’s go.” He said softly, his eyes closed in sadness as he did so.
“You forgot one!” Nick called out to them, gesturing to Lee.
Kenny shot him an evil glare. “Don’t. You. Dare. Touch him. Leave him be.” Kenny yelled back to him, continuing on his way with the young girl.
They were walking for around five minutes, Clementine’s fists shaking the whole way, the anger still bubbling inside her. Suddenly, she stopped upon making eye contact with a house. “Here.” Without another word, the young girl started up the stairs and headed to the front door of this house and swung it open. “So that’s why this place is familiar…” She mused sadly, taking a step inside.
It was her home.
Clementine wandered through the torn up living room, glancing at the pictures and furniture. She laid eyes on a photo of her entire family, resting by the answering machine. With a sad smile, she slid it into her backpack and sighed.
“Clem,” Luke started, shutting the door behind him as the others settled in the small living room. “What was that back there?” He asked, stepping closer to the young girl that Kenny was still standing beside.
“Correction, what the hell was that back there?!” Nick asked, more demanding than Luke had. “I mean…woah! You went all badass back there, what the hell caused that to happen?!”
“Nick, I swear—”
Clementine held up her hand sternly, her expression serious and irritated as she did so to stop Kenny from speaking. “No. I’ll explain.” She said, her tone indicating that she didn’t want a fight. Her expression grew solemn in the silence, her eyes drifting from her friends to the floor. “That was Lee back there…” She said quietly, instantly causing Luke’s gaze to change from panic to pity. “He promised be he wouldn’t become a walker…but then he got bit.” Kenny placed a hand on the young girl’s shoulder hearing her voice crack slightly. “Seeing him was just a little too much…I got angry. I didn’t like him being a walker.” She sighed and took a shaky breath before finishing. “He was always there for me. He protected me from anything that could hurt me and offered to help me find my parents. That’s how he got killed….He was supposed to always have my back…but now…” Clementine could feel her vision go blurry, the tears clouding her eyes making it impossible to see. “But now he can’t.” After a tiny sniffle, tears poured down the young girls face, tiny sobs escaping her lips.
Before Kenny had a chance to do anything, Luke leaped forwards and wrapped the young girl in a hug. “Hey Clem…calm down. We got our answer, we won’t ask any more questions.” He shot a glare at Nick, begging him internally not to say anything to upset her more.
Kenny removed his hand from Clem’s shoulder and turned to the others. Without saying a word, he ushered them away to let the two be alone and quietly asked to start setting up sleeping bags.
“Shh…Clem it’s ok.” Luke whispered. “I know it’s sad but it’s ok now, alright? It’s ok. You’re safe. You’re fine.” Noticing how everyone was getting ready for bed, Luke hoisted the fragile girl in his arms and started up the stairs. She seemed almost as if he held her too tight, she would shatter like glass. She was so broken, so sad. “There’s gotta be a room somewhere up here for you…” He mused, glancing around.
“My room is on the right….” She said with a sniffle.
“Your room?” Luke asked softly, not wanting to be too loud for her.
“This used to be my house.” She said sadly. “That’s why I knew we could stay here for the night…”
Luke frowned. “You’re a tough little girl you know…” He mused quietly, following her directions and entering the small room. He set her down on her old bed and sat beside her.
“Aren’t you going to go downstairs to sleep?” Clementine asked sadly, her tears falling against the pillow.
Luke chuckled and brushed a tear away. “No. I think I’m going I’m going to stay up here for the night.”
Clem gave him a small smile in return as she closed her eyes. Carefully, Luke lifted the blankets up to her chin and watched as he began to drift to sleep, small sniffles escaping every now and then. “Sweet dreams, Clem.” His gruff voice whispered. Knowing that she had finally fallen asleep, he planted a gentle kiss on her cold forehead and leaned against the wall.
He could never leave her alone. Not anymore. He had to always be by her side and be there for her.
She may be a little girl, but now she was his little girl.
