Clementine and Luke

This was requested by Anonymous and juliaaaaaaaaaaaaisssssmeeee. Clementine finally needs to tell the season 2 cabin group what happened before she met them, and the story is a little too much for her to re-tell.

"Clem, I don’t think you ever told us where you came from." Sarah’s voice broke the silence that Clementine had been so carefully building up. She knew this moment was coming, hell, she was even bracing herself for it. She still didn’t want to speak, however.
Clementine set her fork down against the table of the ski lodge and took a deep breathe inwards before speaking. “What do you mean?” She asked, as if trying to delay telling her story.
“Like, clearly you were with someone before you were with us, right? Who were they? What’s your story?”
“Sarah…” Carlos said, giving his daughter a cautious gaze. Clementine held up her hand however, stopping the silent conversation in it’s tracks. “I’ll tell.” She said softy, causing Luke’s eyes to study her carefully. Her voice sounded different, almost as if it was filled with regret. That was something new to his ears. Clementine gave a small, weak cough before speaking. “It started out with this man, Lee.” She second the name grazed her lips, Luke’s gaze softened. He knew this story would be hard for her to tell, he only hoped that sitting near her could possibly help since he knew a small portion of her background. “He found me when I was all alone in my tree house. He told me he would help me find my parents—they went to Savannah on a vacation.” After adjusting her hat and giving another small cough, she proceeded in her story. “Well, he helped me through a lot. We met a lot of people…but all of them, every single one of them…is gone now….” Clementine’s voice began to fade as she continued.
“Clementine, you don’t—”
“We actually reached Savannah,” Clementine stated, cutting Luke off. “But I was taken by this man…he was angry that he lost his wife and thought he could take care of me.” Clementine sat silently for a moment, the haunting memories clouded her mind. “Lee got bitten when he came to find me.” Everyone’s breath hitched slightly at the comment, their eyes darting to one another as if looking for answers on what to do next. “I had to shoot him….the one thing I had left after I saw how my parents had turned into walkers…” Her voice cracked slightly on the middle of her sentence, but she gave a hard swallow and continued on. “It’s my fault I lost him.” Her golden eyes rose from the table to meet Kenny, who was slightly across from her. “And I miss him.”
Kenny gave a small nod and looked away, as if completely understanding anything that she said or did next.
As she glanced around the table, she got stares of pity and sadness. She knew her story couldn’t be possibly as bad as anyone else’s, but maybe to them her story was the most tragic. “Excuse me.” She whispered, pushing herself away from the table and starting for the stairs. As soon as she grabbed onto the doorknob of the small room she was staying in, she could hear a familiar voice call he name and come bounding up the stairs after her. Before she knew it, Luke was closing the door behind them and kneeling in front of her.
“Clem,” he whispered softly. Clem’s eyes rose to meet his own, small pools of tears resting on the corners of her eyes. “I’m so sorry. We never should have asked you to tell anything. I mean, I think Sarah—”
“It’s okay.” Clementine said with a short, single, sad laugh. “I’m glad they finally know. I’m glad I finally got it all out.” Clem forced a sad smile while Luke’s gave remained stern yet concerned.
Just as Luke reached around to give her a comforting pat on the shoulder, a wrenched sob escaped her lips as she quickly looked away. Just before she could fall apart, Luke wrapped his strong arms around her and kept her together.
“Hey Clem, it’s okay.” He whispered, carefully walking over to her bed and sitting on the edge with her resting on his lap. “Everything will be okay, Clem. I promise. What happened to them won’t happen to me.” He didn’t know if these words were true, but he swore to keep this promise no matter what happens.
After a while, Clementine’s weak sobs turned into gentle breathing with a small shaky breath or two here and there. Luke carefully glanced down after half an hour had passed and carefully studied her face.
“Hmm..” He grunted softly. She looked so innocent when she was sleeping. She looked a little less bad-ass and more like a little girl. A smile forced it’s way onto his face as he adjusted her hat. It was heartbreaking to him how such a young girl could be thrown into such heartbreak and madness that the world was tossing at everyone. He could only pray that she would make it, she just had to.
“Luke!” Nick cried in terror, slamming the door open. “Carver’s on his way up the mountain. We need to move. Now!” He called sternly.
Luke glanced down at the slumbering girl in his arms. “Gosh, she’s out like a light….” He muttered as gently sat her on the bed and stood.
“Well, wake her up. She has some running to do.” Nick quickly tossed Luke his backpack and dashed down the stairs, brushing past the others as he did so.
After tightening his straps around his shoulders, Luke carefully lifted the young girl in his arms.
“I’ll do the running for you today.” He whispered with a small smirk as he started for the stairs.
Once they all had gotten outside, Luke stayed at the back as the group started for the woods. As he ran he was careful to hold Clementine close, but not too close as to crush her. “I got you, Clem. I promise.”
