As soon as Clementine took a seat at the ski lodge dinner table, something felt off.
She could feel it in her bones.
Kenny slipped by and placed a bowl of peaches and beans in front of her, as well as dropping one in front of all of his other crew members. The original cabin group that Clementine had shown up with all had to get their own food, that was, except for Clementine. She could feel the questioning glares from her original crew digging into the back of her skull with every ticking moment as they slowly walked to their seats. It felt as if they were going slower just to sink more pain into her heart.
“So Clementine, how ya holding up?” Kenny asked with a smile in attempt to break the nervous silence, mixing his food and allowing it to rest against his spoon as he awaited an answer.
After blinking a few times to think of a response, she smiled and gave a tiny shrug. “I’ve been…okay.” Even though in her mind she thought that was an okay answer, according to the glares of her group members she was wrong. Did her answer offend them somehow?
Seeing the young girl sink in her chair, Kenny raised an eyebrow and stared down the rest of her crew. Something was going on…but what?
“Clementine, do you need anything to drink?” Sarita asked with a sweet smile. Clem could see why Kenny fell for her, she was just as sweet as Katjaa, but she seemed to be able to hold her own a little more.
Clementine smiled but shook her head. “No, I’m alright.” Sarita nodded and returned to her meal, causing Clementine to give a rather late, “Thank you.”
“Anytime, Clementine.” She responded with a small nod.
Kenny was about to speak again to make sure that she was comfortable—after all she did seem a little on edge—when a sudden slam at the end of the table grabbed his attention. “Okay.” Nick grumbled, pushing himself to his feet and throwing his spoon on the table. “We need to get something out in the open that we’ve all been wondering.”
“Nick,” Luke warned, glaring up at his best friend cautiously.
Nick met his gaze for a brief moment before tearing away and glaring at the youngest girl at the table. “We all just want to know how long it will be until you drop us.”
“What?” Clementine asked in shock.
“Don’t fucking play dumb with us.”
“Nick!”
Ignoring Luke’s plea, he continued. “Clearly you love this group way more than you like ours, so when are you going to drop us and move onto the next best thing like you did to your last group.”
Clementine could feel her heart collapse at that statement. She didn’t leave her last group, her last group died and left her all alone in the woods. Is that what they thought she did?
“Nick I—”
“Fucking save it. If you want to hang out with these guys instead of us, stop bullshitting around and just tell us.”
“That’s enough!” Kenny boomed, pushing himself to the same position as the irritated Nick. However, if Nick was considered angry, Kenny was infuriated. “Don’t you dare come into a house that we offered to let you say in and then smash on this little girl.”
Slowly, Kenny pushed himself away from his seat and began working his way around the table towards Nick. “Clementine didn’t leave her last group. Having the option, she probably would have stayed with all of us until the end of this all. But you know what happened? Walkers fucking happened. She didn’t choose to leave, asshole. She was forced!” By now, Kenny was looking over the man, fire blazing in his eyes. “I’m the last known survivor of that group that she had, and if you’re going to sit here and tell me that she can’t have a fucking conversation with me, then you can get the hell out of this lodge. Because Clementine is the best thing that could ever happen to your group, and you should be so god damn lucky to have her with you!”
Silence.
Nick had backed off by now, and had purposely taking a step away from when Kenny was leaning over him.
Kenny huffed in satisfaction and leaned back.”That little girl is tougher than any kid I have ever met. And if you’ve got a problem with anything about her, you take it up with me, vanilla ice.” He snarled, returning to his original seat.
Looks of panic and horror were streaked across the faces of the cabin group, while Kenny’s group seemed calm and mildly relaxed.
As he slid into his seat next to Clementine, Kenny threw an arm over the back of her chair and gave her a reassuring nod. His signature one that he used to give all the time that said ‘I’ve got your back’. She used to see it all the time when he talked with Lee.
Dinner resumed to being rather quiet, with the cabin group mostly talking to each other and Kenny’s group keeping to themselves.
At one point, Clementine rested her spoon in her bowl and glanced up to see Kenny smirking happily.
“What is it?” She asked, tilting her head in interest.
Kenny’s smirk grew as he turned his gaze from the young girl to Nick.
“Hm. Vanilla ice. I think that’s going to catch on.”
