“Sarah?” Hearing extreme heavy breathing coming from her right, Clementine glanced over and placed a hand against the girl’s shoulder.
Flinching away at her touch, the raven-haired girl gasped. “S-Stop! Just stop!” She yelled.
“Sarah! Stop yelling, you’ll attract walkers!” Clementine whispered harshly, her eyes a mix of anger and concern.
“I don’t care! Just…” She sniffled sadly, pushing her cracked glasses farther up he nose. “Just leave me alone.”
Clem pouted, glancing to both of their sides as she placed a hand against her friend’s back and ushered her to keep moving forwards. “Come on, we need to keep moving.”
“Can’t we just…stop. I don’t want to go any farther.”
Clementine bit her lip in restraint and sighed. While she understood why Sarah was acting in such an intolerant way, she didn’t have her head straight. They needed to keep moving otherwise they would be found out. By walkers or otherwise. “We’ll stop in a little while, let’s just get out of these woods first.”
With a defeated sigh, Sarah nodded. “O-Okay.”
Guiding her down the frosty dirt path, Clementine wore a distraught frown the entire way. How were they going to get past this? Sarah was a broken girl now, there was no going back to who she was before her father turned. She desperately wanted to see the girl she knew again. She missed seeing Sarah’s grin when they would take pictures together or her laugh when she would decorate the Christmas tree back at the lodge. Why did things need to turn so bad so fast? Sarah was a new person now, and Clem didn’t like it one bit.
“Here. Sit down here.” Clementine said quietly, placing Sarah against a large rock in a tiny dirt clearing. They hadn’t been walking for too long, but the deafening silence made it feel like forever and a half.
Noticing Sarah’s shaking, Clementine wasn’t able to tell if it was because of her anxiety or because she was cold. In this circumstance, either or could be the case. Glancing around their small site, Clementine quickly grabbed two dry sticks and placed them at her side before fumbling around to grab dead leaves, small twigs, and branches that had fallen off of the large looming trees. Stuffing them all into the centre of dirt circle that she had made with her shoe, Clem stuck one of the leaves in between two piece of bark to stay in place and rapidly rubbed two twigs together in hopes of creating friction.
Sarah watched curiosity but her eyes constantly drifting to where they had came from, and Clem knew why.
She missed her father.
Hearing a satisfying crackle, Clementine grinned in awe as one of the twigs ignited into a small flame. Without hesitation, the child slipped the burning twig around the dead leaves, causing a small but steady fire to burn before them.
“Thank you.” Sarah said, kneeling against the ground and placing her hands closer to the fire.
Finally being able to see her friend in the light caused Clementine’s eyes to widen. She could see it now, the small trails from old tears left markings along her face. She had been crying on the walk there.
“Sarah…”
Hearing her name, the teen frowned. “Yes?”
Instinctively, Clem slipped around the fire and took a seat beside her friend, placing her hands in her lap to speak. “Sarah I know it’s hard.” She started, watching as her expression fell even more. Yes she didn’t want to make her feel worse, but this needed to be said. “I’ve lost people too….I lost someone who felt like my Dad…”
Lee.
Even thinking about him caused her to descend into a fit of depression. Lee was her entire world for so long, and he was so quickly ripped away.
“Right, Lee.”
Clementine nodded, refusing to speak the name aloud in fear of her herself breaking. “We’ve all lost someone or something we care about. But we need to stay strong. You’re Dad would want you to keep going.”
Sarah was silent for a moment, future tears glistening on the rims of her eyes. “You think so?” She said softly, her voice breaking as she spoke.
“I know so.”
Three simple words, and the teen turned into a wreck.
Tightly wrapped her arms around Sarah, hugging her as tightly as she could without cutting off airflow, Clementine hugged her tightly. “It’s okay, Sarah. You’ll be okay.”
Allowing the teen to cry into her shoulder gave Clementine a small glimmer of hope, however. While Sarah was still a wreck, Clementine knew that she would be okay—at least for now. She would let all of her emotions out, and then they could continue on living. Together.
“I promise Sarah, I won’t leave you.”
Feeling her fists grab and clench the fabric at the back of her jacket, Clementine gave a sad smile as Sarah nodded.
“I won’t either Clem.”
Or at least she would try.
