“Luke?” Clementine called, gently knocking against the metal door that separated the male and female. Hearing a tiny sigh from within, Clem creaked the door open an inch more.
“Yeah, Clem?” The male grumbled in a husky voice, causing the female to finally step inside.
“Luke I—” Noticing the small bottle of beer in her hands, Clementine’s eyes widened and flickered to meet his gaze. “I came to see how your birthday is going.”
He shrugged, taking another swing and allowing the dull liquid to swirl around in his mouth before swallowing. “It’s okay. You know, for what it is.”
Clementine frowned, walking closer and taking a seat next to the drinker and watching as he tilted his head back to finish off the bottle. “Where did you find that?” She asked with a sad, yet curious, tilt of the head.
Giving a refreshing sigh, he placed the jar at his feet and gave a weak smile to the girl. “Leave it to Nick to snag a bunch of these before we got him out of that shed.” Luke said softly, his eyes darting to the ground in sorrow. Lifting another one out of the bag to his right, he took another long chug before adjusting his hold on the bottle and letting it sway between his legs.
Watching his actions carefully, Clementine frowned and spoke. “You shouldn’t drink that much.”
“I need too right now, Clem.” After speaking the male rubbed one of his eyes tiredly and sighed. “I can’t believe Nick’s gone. We were so close. So close to making it.”
“I know. I miss him too.”
Luke sighed, standing and rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s unfair. It’s unfair…” He grumbled to himself. In a drunken rage, he tossed the empty bottle of beer against the wall. The sound of glass slicing filled the air as tiny shards fell like snowflakes around the two, glistening softly as they landed in Clementine’s hair.
Gasping, the child ducked her head into her legs, shielding her face from the soaring shards. “L-Luke!” She squealed, a mix or horror and anger in her voice.
Wobbling in circles around the room, Luke ran his fingers through his hair in frustration before flopping to the ground.
“Luke, you need to snap out of this!” Clementine claimed loudly in hopes of shaking him out of his drunk tantrum. “If you keep going on like this you’re going to hurt someone.” Shaking some of the glass out of her pigtails, she flinched and quickly blew the tiny shards out of her finger that had gotten stuck there.
Luke groaned, lifting the bottle of beer again and taking another swing.
“Luke!” She yelled angrily, stepping forwards, glass crunching underneath her feet. Kneeling down against the shards on the floor, a jolt took over her body as she felt the glass cut her hands and knees. But this needed to be done, she knew that the injuries would be worth it. She needed to save her friend. “Luke, you need to stop.” She whispered desperately, clenching her hands into fists of pain and worry. “You’re going to get someone hurt by doing this. You need to stop!”
Luke paused his eyes blinking slowly as the edge of the bottle rested against his lower lip, mentally debating wether or not he should take another swing of the bitter liquid.
“I know that Nick’s death is hard on you, but you need to stop hurting yourself. You’re going to end up hurting other people to.”
Luke’s eyes slowly peeled open, glancing to his side. His orbs widened as his gaze rested on the girl. “Clem, you’re bleeding.”
Clementine blinked in confusion and glanced down, lifting her sliced hands with shards of glass protruding from her wounds.
“Oh my god, you’re bleeding bad!” Tossing the bottle to the side with a clink, he took her hands in his and carefully plucked the large bits out of her palms, causing a finch from the female every time. “Oh god…Clem I’m so sorry.”
Clementine jolted one last time as the last bit of glass was plucked from her bleeding palms. “It’s okay, Luke.”
He gave a weak smile to the female, brushing his fingers over her cuts. She was his wake-up call. What would he do if he didn’t have her here with him? “We should get these bandaged up. Before anything else happens.” He whispered with a sad smile, regret washing over his features. Clementine gave a small nod and a tiny smile, hoping to calm the males nerves.
“And Clem?”
The female met his gaze and nodded, her golden eyes sparkling. “Yeah?”
His smile fading into a genuine one, he nodded thankfully. “Thanks. For everything.”
“Anytime, Luke. Happy Birthday.”
