The New Frontier had them cornered. Their land was on complete lock down, and their group was already on the wanted list. The perimeter would be searched top to bottom until they were found.

Next up on their to-do list: figure out how to get out of there.

"Clementine?"

The voice shot the child out of her thoughts; forming ways she could search and snag AJ without being caught by security. Her ideas were drawing thin, but just before frustration could fuel her, Gabe's voice broke the silence.

"Hm?"

"Do you mind if I stand?" He gestured to the open space on to the counter she leaned against.

Offering a kind smile, a part of her thankful someone interrupted her thoughts, she nodded. "Sure. Pull up a slab."

Without hesitation, Gabe slipped beside her. He made sure to leave enough space between them for it to not be awkward, but still allowed himself to sink back. "You seem lost in thought."

Clementine chuckled, her arms crossing. "And you aren't? It's crazy out there."

In response Gabe matched her laughter, elbows behind him propping him upright. "That's fair. It is a little crazy." He turned, instead of staring at the huddle of adults to rest on the girl beside him. "But you seem different." He hesitated, realizing how awkwardly the phrase came out. "I mean, thought-wise."

Clementine could feel her stature break, turning to the boy in surprise. How long had he been around and yet could still decode what she was thinking? How strange. "I guess that's true."

"So, what about?" Gabe shifted to his side, his hip jetting into the counter to fully face her.

Staring at him from the corner of her eye, Clementine scoffed and adjusted her crossed arms. "You don't wanna hear what's going on in my head."

As if offended, his expression softened. "What? Of course I do." He finally managed to catch her gaze, enabling eye-contact with her. "You're deep in thought. I'm curious as to why."

Clementine refused to look away, merely because she was intrigued by his interest in her. She had yet to fully understand Gabe, but definitely wanted to decode him. She had most of the others in their group pegged, but not him. Not yet.

"Okay," Clem began, removing her gaze before continuing. She didn't want to meet anyone's as she spoke further. "I'm just," she hesitated, air catching in her throat. "Worried about AJ."

"Your brother?"

"Yeah." She had to admit, she was surprised he remembered. She had explained the situation what felt like ages ago but refused to let the surprise show in her body. "I just want to find him and get him back. I'm worried we won't have time if we're in a rush to get out of here."

"Then what will happen?"

"I'll stay behind." The phrase clearly seemed to jolt the boy beside her, so she continued. "If he's here and alive I'm not leaving him behind." She shook her head, her body tense. "I refuse."

"We won't leave without him." Gabe assured. "We sure as hell won't leave without you, which means we won't leave without AJ either."

Clementine's hardened gaze, now one that had fallen to the floor, lifted hearing his words of reassurance. The gaze meshing with hers was stern and serious, but also carried a hint of sincerity. Something about him made her need to believe it. "Really?"
