"Oh my god!" After everything that had happened today, Clementine had to admit that Sarita's scream was well earned.
Flipping around to see what was going on behind them Clementine watched as Carver's so called "minions" stood on the roof firing down at walkers and survivors alike. Of course they weren't aiming to save; they were aiming for cold blood to be spilled upon the pavement they walked upon; For survivors to fall where they had drifted astray to Carver's plans. The raven-haired child could only wonder if any of them knew that their precious leader was laying dead inside the building they were standing on, his face beaten in beyond recognition.
"Clem. Watch it."
A gentle whisper hissed in her ears flipping the child's attention back to her front. It was Kenny, she could tell by the irritation dripping from his voice. He clearly noticed her mind starting to wander and intended on keeping her on track. Thank God for that. If it wasn't for Kenny, Clementine would have been toast long ago.
Wavering and flipping through the swarm of flesh hungry beings wasn't easy. They couldn't move to fast, and yet needed to get out as soon as physically possible. They couldn't make a sound but then they couldn't communicate with each other. They needed to blend in but they desperately needed to get out. Their situation wasn't simple to say the least.
A growl snapped the girl back to reality. She needed to stop daydreaming. She had gotten so used to walkers around that she could allow her mind to wander away with them in her presence. Oh, when would things ever get back to normal?
A dart. A dash. A swish. No way was she going to let one of these walkers snag her. Not now. Not on her watch. At least not as easily as simply reaching over and biting her. Too simple. Too easy. Frankly, Clem was too smart for that. However, her teammates were not.
"Agh!"
Clementine almost didn't hear the almost-silent gasp, but it was there. She knew. She could feel the presence of something off in the air. Glancing to her right the child saw Sarita standing in-between two walkers, both limping closer to her. Either they were both trying to pass her, or she was busted. But based on the way they were walking, Clementine wasn't able to tell which one it was.
The adult glanced towards her, desperately begging for help. One of the most pleading states she had ever seen. It almost rendered her weak just watching the fear and hopelessness wash up against her orbs and crash back into her mind, only to return with greater force a few moments later. Clementine glanced around. No other adults were nearby. Kenny was practically home free, and Luke was the only other person Clem could spot but he was on the complete other side of the mess. Neither of them could help. For now, it was her just her and Sarita.
With a hesitant sigh the child slowly slid her way over, moving as quietly and slowly as she could to avoid walker suspicion, but as fast as she could to safely get to her teammate in time.
Clementine reached out, a hand resting against Sarita's coat sleeve. She tugged gently snagging her attention in the quietest way she could think of. However, it seemed as if the walkers surrounding them clued into the situation. One growled and swung his teeth towards the two. Clem yanked Sarita closer to her, just missing the jaws attempt to snatch her skin. A horrified gasp entered the air; Sarita's. She knew she was busted.
They knew they weren't one of them. There was another swing. And another. And another. And yet each one Clementine managed to snag both of them out of the way in time.
Except for one.
Diving in for another bite, Sarita stood stuck, frozen in place. She was hopelessly accepting defeat as the monster lunged for his meal. Clementine shoved with all the strength she had left, leaving her hand perfectly in-between the jaws of the beast. Before he could bite too far into her flesh the child kicked him away with a grunt, stabbing him with a pick in-between his eyes to end his miserable existence.
Her golden eyes glanced down and studied the wound, her fingers tracing the broken skin. At first, she thought it was fine. It looked like nothing more than a scratch and therefor the chances of it getting infected seemed slim. But even as she studied it she watched as the skin shifted to a purple tinted colour. It hit her in the stomach like a brick. She stumbled; almost collapsed onto the floor. She was bitten.
She was done for.
There was a swish, quick and sharp. Clementine ducked and flipped her head to the side. It was Sarita, axe in her hand, a wide, dazed look in her eye, and white knuckles grasping the weapon in her palms so tightly it was as if it could combust into powder.
"S-Sarita?"
SWISH. Another swing.
The child stumbled backwards but regained herself before falling back into the herd and exposing herself more than she had already. "S-Sarita! Stop!" She whisper-yelled, turning and dashing away. She knew what she trying to do; cut off the limb to save her. But Clementine would rather go on with a walker bite than die of weakness and lack of blood among the feet of walkers.
She squealed and whimpered as she shimmied and shot past the swarm of monsters, finally escaping out of the heard and making a mad, violent dash towards Kenny; her saviour. He would understand. He would know what to do. He always did.
His eyes were wide with concern, gathering her in his strong arms upon her hurried arrival. He studied her eyes for an answer, as if he was reading her thoughts so she didn't need to speak.
Her palm was raised to his eye level; the horrendous bite coming into his weakened focus.
"Oh god..." He whispered, taking her tiny hand in his large, thick one. His little girl. His angel. She was harmed, tainted. Her wings were clipped.
Sarita rushed into the scene, axe still in hand and eyes still wide with determination. Instinctively Kenny pushed the girl behind him, standing before his woman in a firm stance; eyes harsh and demeaning. "Weapon down, Sarita."
"But Kenny-"
"Down."
"Kenny she doesn't stand a chance if we don't do something! Like this!"
"Stop it." He spat, flipping around halfway to see the girl behind him. Staring back into her sweet golden eyes he knew he couldn't do it. He couldn't mutilate her. He couldn't taint her innocence even more. "I'm not letting anything happen to you sweetie. You hear me?"
Clem's head bobbed in agreement. She forced back her devastated tears, she didn't want to cry. Not here, not now. It was the stress and anxiety making her feel this way. They would take care of her. They would help her as much as they could. They wouldn't let her go out painfully. She had worked so hard to stay alive, and they wouldn't let that go to waste.
"Then what do we do? Wait for her to turn? Then what'll happen to her? To all of us?"
Kenny shot a glare, one that dared her to continue speaking about the matter. "We'll deal with that when it gets here." And, without another word, they continued walking. Kenny placed a hand against Clementine's back, urging her forwards to stay with the group.
They continued onwards, not knowing what that their future held in store.
