"We'd better get a move on." Carlos grunted, tossing a backpack full of supplies over his shoulder and extending a hand towards his daughter to help her up off the floor.
"Where are we going?" Clementine asked softly, adjusting her hat with one hand and her heavy looming backpack with the other.
Luke carefully adjusted the holder he had around his sword against his back, fixing his belt full of tools and supplies and rubbing his forehead in exhaustion.
"Don't know. We just need to keep walking until we get as far away from here as possible." Kenny muttered, vigorously stuffing cans of food into a large duffel bag.
The group had been on the move for several days attempting to escape Carver's trail, and they had no idea if they were getting any closer to freedom or not. Every day they packed up whatever they could from their location, and continue onwards. They didn't know where they were going or when they would get there, all they knew was that they needed to keep going and never hesitate even for a moment.
"Okay, let's move out." Carlos stated, patting his daughter on the back as she violently clutched at his shirt.
Clementine nodded, following close behind the two with the others trailing behind them. For the most part the group travelled in silence, there wasn't a whole lot to say or do. Everyone in their group was solemn and quiet, and breaking the silence wall that they had built would be a dangerous thing to do.
Rebecca and Alvin always travelled at the rear, the male helping his pregnant wife walk. Luke and Nick were next, just standing silent beside one another for support if the other ever needed it. Next came Kenny, Sarita, and Clementine in the center, and finally, Carlos and Sarah in the lead.
"Ugh, shit." Kenny growled after a while of walking, detaching his arm from Sarita's waist.. "Do you guys hear that?"
The group stopped, and stood completely still and silent on their ground, glancing around and attempting to understand what their ally had been hearing. The male placed a hand against Sarita's shoulder, as if he would be able to tug her close if he needed to.
"Listen." He hushed. A faint growl filled the air around them; a groan of pain from the undead's lips. Kenny silently sighed and placed his head into his palm. "Another walker, Jesus Christ." Holding his hand out to Clem, she reluctantly gave him her small axe; the best weapon they had. Even then Clementine was still nervous to hand it away to anyone. It was her favourite weapon of all, as sad as that was to say.
Sauntering forwards towards the thick forest brush, Clementine frowned. "Just...be careful okay?" She asked softly, and rather nervously.
"I will Clem, don't worry."
She nodded, hugging her arms tightly across her chest. Kenny knew how much she worried about him, and so he always tried his hardest to keep them out of positions that would cause her to fret. The child had enough on her hands as it was.
As the growls slowly faded away to nothingness, small little stabbing noises could be heard by the rest of the group. Clementine winced at first, but slowly relaxed her muscles. She was used to this after all. This was now the world they lived in.
Emerging from the thick brush, Kenny sighed and wiped off the weapon against his dirtied jacket. "We might want to get a move on. I think there are a lot more where that one came from."
"Why do you think that?" Clementine pondered, accepted the weapon that was being slipped back into her delicate fingers.
"There were a lot of growls. Distant ones." He muttered softly, kneeling down to the child's level. The two had discovered not to talk about walkers too much with Sarah in earshot. She was too fragile and they didn't want to risk breaking her down. "We must be passing by an abandoned town, that's where they normally are." He grunted, pushing himself back to his feet with his knees. "Let's get going. No time to lose."
Carlos gave a small nod to his friend, thankful for his tone he was taking up with Clementine. Kenny knew what it was like to have a child in this mess, he wasn't going to risk harming Sarah like he felt he had failed Duck. His features faded into mourning as they walked, quickly discovered by the child walking beside him. Clem couldn't help but feel her heart sink whenever Kenny's did. When you spent enough time with someone, sensing their emotions become a sixth sense. Slipping her little hand into his own, she gave her guardian a reassuring nod in hopes of lifting his spirits.
Feeling warmth against his palm, the male couldn't help but offer a small smile as they continued forwards. Clementine cared so much for so many people, and she had to admit that it weakened him a little. Clementine was his weak spot, his eternal kryptonite.
As they continued to walk however, the grip against Clementine's hand grew tighter and tighter. Distance groans and snarls were growing louder now, boxing them in like a lion stalked his prey.
"They're getting close..." Kenny grumbled through clenched teeth. Just hearing the haunting moans caused him to tense. Kenny would forever hate walkers to the core of his being. "Pick up the pace guys, let's not hesitate."
Carlos forced his hand against Sarah's back that much more, ushering her forwards as much as he could without pushing her.
"Come on, Clem. We gotta move faster."
"Okay." She grumbled quickly, scurrying faster towards the edge of the woods that were drawing closer with every step. Kenny extended his arm out to Sarita to keep her close, gesturing to the others to stay nearby.
Taking a sharp turn to escape the herd that was climbing closer to their backs, the group burst out of the thick brush to reveal a deserted city street.
"It's a town..." Sarah said softly, her eyes wide with horror as she glanced around the barren wasteland of an outskirt.
Nick scoffed. "More like was."
The few buildings that remained were damaged severally and splattered with blood, bodies lined the edges of the streets like driving markers, and the houses that were not torn completely to shreds still had decks smashed in and windows shattered.
"Jesus Christ." Kenny muttered. "Those damn walkers tore this place apart. It's a wasteland."
Clementine's eyes scanned the streets, slowly sauntered forwards to get a better look at the state and condition of everything.
"I'm sure at least one of these houses is in good enough condition for us to camp out in. Even for just the night." Luke reasoned, hands resting at his sides.
Stepping past an ally-way, Clementine could hear a growl emit from the dark depths in between buildings.
"Clementine, watch it!" Kenny wailed.
Turning to her side in hopes of stopping the walker in its tracks, her eyes widened upon seeing the figure stumble closer towards her.
One arm looked as if it had been ripped off, while the other looked rather in-tack except for the bite mark against its wrist and the small yellow rubber band wrapped tightly around his bicep. But glancing up into the monsters eyes is what shattered the child whole.
"L-Lee..."
Hearing the child's desperate and soul-crushing whisper made Kenny to immediately glance away from staring behind him. "C-Clemen-" His voice hitched as he studied the two, and the walker that stumbled closer as the young girl weakly stumbled backwards. "Clem..." His weak voice pleaded. Rushing to the child's side, he placed his hands against the girls limp shoulders.
"It's....that's....it's Lee, Kenny." She stuttered. "That's Lee."
"I know, Clem." He whispered weakly. His heart dipped into his stomach with each lifeless step, his friend from so long ago fumbling to remain balanced.
"I can't kill him, Kenny." Small pools of hot tears gathered in the corners of her eyes, resting and waiting for the final hit to push them over the edge and down her cheeks. "I can't hurt Lee."
"You don't need to, Clem." He whispered, hugging her shoulders closer to his body in comfort. "Come on, we'll just leave him, okay? We're gunna walk away, and let him roam around here. Alone. In peace." He adjusted his hold on her so he could peak into her broken gaze. "We won't hurt him. We're going to leave him be."
"O-Okay, Kenny." She said quietly, one of her hands clinging to his shirt as if it was her lifeline.
"Let's go, sweetheart."
As he turned the child around, he frowned and gave a respectful nod to the male. No way in hell were either of them going to injure him in any way. They respected him way too much for that. He had saved Clementine's life a countless amount of times, and that's all the thanks Kenny ever could have asked for.
Ducking her head into Kenny's side as they walked back to their group, Nick raised his arms in confusion. "What the hell was that?"
"Clem, what's going on?" Luke asked desperately, kneeling to her level and placing a hand against her head. His heart ached whenever he saw the young girl in pain, he just couldn't bear it.
"Don't ask. Let's just keep moving." Kenny grumbled, gesturing for them to take another route around the town instead of through. They could stand to lose a few minutes for Clementine to regain her metal health.
Gesturing for everyone to move ahead, Clementine rushed to Luke's side. The male placed his arms around her frail, quivering her body, acting as a shield for all questions that would soon be fired her way.
Kenny gave once last glance at his companion, and tipped his hat in respect.
"Rest easy, pal."
