She had been waiting outside of their door for at least 5 minutes, yet still couldn't gain the courage to push it open.

With tears stinging the backs of her eyes, the child set a cold, trembling hand against the wooden door. Just across this barrier sat two people she loved — two people she saw as her second set of parents — and still, she hesitated.

The cloud of fear that had consumed her in sleep returned, hauntingly floating over her head as she stood in the doorway, quivering lip clenched down by her chattering teeth. Her hand wavered atop the doorknob, wanting nothing more than to burst inside. But what was holding her back?

Maybe it was a fear of what was inside the room, or maybe it was a fear of irritating the two she adored so much. Maybe it was both. But feeling a surge push her forwards, she reached out and turned the doorknob, pushing it open.

Then, there was stunned silence.

The sudden fear that had once consumed her seemed to vanish the moment she stumbled into the room, freezing in confusion at the sight before her.

On the bed sat the couple, Kenny looming over his partner who remained topless under him, her hands clenching at his shirt. The instant the child burst into the room, however, whatever they were doing froze and their eyes hauntingly wandered to the girl in their door frame.

"Clementine!" The horror in Kenny's voice said everything Sarita didn't need to. The instant the name escaped his lips, she rushed to stuff herself back into her shirt, rolling deeper into their covers to hide herself before the child got too good of a look.

Yet, almost just as the name left his lips, Kenny's gaze truly fixated on the child. Beneath her horrified gaze he could see clouds of sorrow, and the faint trails of past tears staining her cheeks.

Instantly, he softened, his voice taking on the tone of protective urgency rather than apprehension. "Clem, what happened?"

Clementine's head tilted. The sudden sorrow and anxiety built up within her being pushed aside, rapidly replaced with confusion. "What are you doing?"

Kenny blinked in befuddlement, amazed at how she had dodged his question and instead was more interested in the two them. "Clem, d-don't worry about that. What's wrong? What happened?"

Clementine, at first, didn't answer. She remained silent and stubborn in her efforts to study the expressions of the two. "What's going on?" This time her voice came out more hesitant, almost cautious.

Sarita, now joining the conversation after having composed herself, glanced between the two of them nervously. The awkward, silent stare off seemed to strike fear into Kenny, turning to Sarita desperate for answers. Luckily for them, they hadn't proceeded further than getting the single shirt off, so they didn't need to explain too much.

Nervously, Kenny cleared his throat. "Well, Clem," Sarita swished her eyes to study her partner. "We were going to do--"

"Kenny!" Sarita whisper-yelled, slapping his arm with the back of her palm.

"Ow!" He groaned, flinching at the contact. His voice was sharp and fierce, as if he was caught off guard. "What?"

"She's 5!"

"She asked!"

"She's too young to have any of this explained to her, Kenny!" Sarita huffed, crossing her arms and allowing the embarrassed, red tint to flood her cheeks. "She won't understand."

"Then I don't see what the problem is."

Spotting Sarita's daring glare, Kenny groaned internally, only allowing a meek whisper of it to escape. Finally, he turned his attention back to the nervous child, discarding their whisper-yelling fit.

"Are you guys okay?" The child asked meekly, hesitant fear clouding her every word.

Kenny's brow twitched, confused as to why the girl seemed so on edge. Whatever she was in here for had shaken her badly enough to a point to cause distrust of the two she was as parents. He didn't like that one bit.

Kenny bit down on his inner cheek, his shoulders deflating in frustration before trying again. "We were just," he hesitated, as if waiting to see if Sarita would strike him once more. When she didn't, he resumed. "Showing each other we love each other."

While her dumbfound gaze remained stuck, Clem's shoulders eased given the response. Somehow, it calmed her. While she still didn't know exactly what the claim meant, it sounded sweet enough that it gave her a sense that they weren't trying to kill and/or smother each other.

"Clementine, what's wrong?" Sarita asked, her voice gentle and soft, and yet she was somehow more pressing than when Kenny had asked earlier. The adult slipped herself closer to the edge of the bed, hoping to seem more open and generous towards the child.

Clem's eyes flickered to the woman, her feet suddenly shifting back and forth underneath her in a frenzy of nerves. Feeling content enough with their answer, she felt comfortable changing the subject. For now. "A bad dream."

"Oh sweetie," Sarita breathed, the couple's shoulders falling in sync with understanding. Tenderly, her arms opened, waving her hands sweetly to come closer. "Come on, come in here with us."

Kenny's head instantly whipped to the side, studying Sarita's face; however, she refused to turn and make eye contact with him. While a part of him knew this was coming, he still had hope they would have time to themselves that night.

"But," Clem hesitated. "I think you were busy." She spoke in a hushed tone, her eyes turning to meet the panicked horror Kenny wore.

He didn't dare move, too afraid he would give her the impression she wasn't welcome with them. Instead, he let Sarita do the talking.

"We weren't, Clementine. Even if we were, we'd make time for you." She turned, urgent eyes settling upon Kenny's. "Right, Kenny?"

Kenny suppressed a groan and gave a kind smile, turning to the child to offer his answer. "Exactly, Clem."

"So, come on." Sarita opened her arms again, her smile radiating the same amount of warmth as earlier. "Come sit with us."

Kenny would never flinch on gushing about how much he loved the child, and seeing her meek smile as she waddled towards the edge of their bed made his heart swell. With ease, Sarita had lifted her between the two of them, laying her down and letting Clem curl wherever was comfortable for her.

From across the bed, she opened her eyes, spotting the wide-eyed gaze Kenny was giving her from over the child's resting head. His stare gradually melted to one of desperation, one that screamed 'seriously?' Of course, his irritation could never be directed towards the child. Rather, it was held towards the fate that they could never get time alone together.

Sarita simply smiled and coiled her arms around the young girl, bringing her deeper into her grasp and cradling her into a sense of security.

Oh how she loved teasing him. Keeping him waiting was part of the fun.
