“Nick—”
“God damn! I can’t believe it.” Nick grumbled, quickly cutting off Clementine as he slumped to the floor of the small shack they had taken shelter in. It was a mystery to Clementine on how long he had managed to hold out before breaking down, and even at his weakest point he was still pretty sturdy.
“Nick—”
“God dammit! Why did I leave his side! This is all my fault…”
“Nick, it’s not—”
“Jesus Christ…”
“Nick!” Clementine scolded, being careful not to be too loud to alarm any of the walkers that were lurking nearby. Finally grabbing his attention Clementine blinked, realizing her seriousness, and gave a gentle cough. “Nick.” She repeated, calmer and quieter this time. “I’m really sorry about Pete.”
“Yeah.” He grumbled, massaging his temple with two fingers as his head hung in shame. Clementine studied this gesture carefully, as it seemed to be a way to a lot of men expressed their displeasure.
“But we need to keep going.”
Nick’s gaze slid up and locked onto hers. “Are you serious?” Flinching back at his harsh tone, she nodded and continued to stand her ground. “We can’t leave now. Walkers are surrounding the woods around us, we’re stuck in a tiny shed, nobody knows where we are, and the best survival expert I know is dead. Take a seat, kid. It’s going to be a long while before we can ‘keep going.’”
Clementine frowned as her eyes studied her shoes and the dirty floor beneath them. Gathering up the courage to do so, Clementine walked beside Nick and slid down into a sitting position beside him.
The saddened orbs turned to glance at the small girl before turning back to the wall in front of him. Silence fell over them like a blanket, giving some awkwardness but also some comfort.
“I don’t understand why you chose to come and help me over him.” His gruff voice spoke. Clementine’s eyes rolled up to the side of his face, watching as he continued to speak.
“We’re friends, aren’t we?” Nick glanced down at her, as if the answer wasn’t intelligent enough to compute. Clementine frowned at her attempt to make peace and continued. “Pete was bitten. No matter what he wouldn’t have made it.”
“You still could have helped him, maybe we could have fixed it.”
“No, we couldn’t have. It’s happened to a close friend of mine before.” More silence and a stunned expression from Nick caused her golden eyes to flee back to the floor. “It’s less pain for everyone this way.”
Nick couldn’t believe the words that he was hearing. Here was this young girl whom he thought was going to hold them back and, in more was than one, she had saved him. “You’re strong, kid.” He whispered, giving a sad smile down at the girl. “And thanks.” The young girl gave a small smile in return before the comfort of quiet consumed them again. Nick couldn’t believe it. While he missed Pete with all of his being, this little girl just wanted to see him go through the least amount of pain. For some reason, that gave him a little relief.
“Yes.”
The one word escaping his mouth caused Clementine to stare up at him in confusion. Slowly, Nick placed his hand on the young girl’s shoulder and smiled down at her. “We are friends.”
Clementine smiled back and slid herself a little closer to the male. Those three words seemed to give her more courage then she ever guessed she would gave in that moment.
