They had been bickering for upwards of half an hour. Finally, having enough of them chattering in her ear, Brody slammed her book closed and shot a glare at the two beside her. "If I say yes, will you guys stop pestering me to play every day?"
Louis hesitated, standing upright opposed to the deep leer he had previously been giving her. He chewed his lower lip, debating.
Beside him, Violet rolled her eyes. "Yes, he will."
"Vi! I haven't decided yet." Louis scoffed, faking disrespect. Louis contemplated for another moment before shrugging. "Yes, I will."
Violet scrunched her nose. "Louis, you're an ass."
"I know," he claimed, waving a hand. "But, I'm an ass that gets to play war."
Brody, visibly irritated, shoved her book to the side and started toward their usual playing table. As she brushed past them, she didn't say a word. She could already see Marlon sitting, fiddling with the deck of cards.
The thought of Marlon being there made the concept of playing more tolerable. Marlon, for as long as Brody could remember, was like a mentor. He looked out for her and talked to her like nobody else had. She would be lying if she said she didn't think he treated her differently than everyone else at the school.
Hearing shifting sounds across the table, Marlon glanced up. Catching Brody's gaze, she could see his eyes waver and widen. "Brody, are you playing?"
She nodded, shrugging her shoulders. She tried to play it off as if she was disinterested and forced, even though the thought of playing with him made her more accepting — even excited — to play. "Louis's making me."
Marlon's shocked expression curled into his unique frown, the one where the left corner of his mouth pressed into itself, but he didn't tell her she didn't need to play. A part of him was glad she was finally engaging in group activities. Her seclusion from the rest of them worried him.
"Finally, we have a decent team." Louis grinned, placing himself at the head of the table as usual. He cleared his throat, swiping the cards from where they were sitting in front of Marlon. Swiftly, he divided the stack into 4 and slid them to each player.
Without needing a cue to start, they all played a card. Brody had watched from afar enough to know how to play.
Violet won, Louis lost.
"Ha!" Violet laughed, leering over the table at the teen. Her eyes squinted. "Did you take the last granola bar from the snack cupboard in the kitchen?"
Louis slammed a fist on the table and leaned forward to meet her. "How dare you accuse me of such treason."
There was silence, the two staring each other down intensifying. Marlon smirked, watching the stare down with amusement.
"Yes, it was me."
"Ugh!" Violet slammed herself back down in her seat. "You dick! You know I called it."
Louis shrugged, hands extended, and flashed a toothy grin. "It was the best snack I've ever had."
Violet flashed her middle finger.
