"Are girls supposed to like boys?" Silence flooded the room upon the question's entry. Clementine's curiosity hung hauntingly over the heads of those in the vicinity.

Slowly, Kenny lowered his book, allowing his gaze to peek over its cover. Luke's attention diverted from the stick he was carving into with a pocket knife, and Carlos, busy braiding Sarah's hair, froze to make eye contact with the child.

"Clem," Carlos began, shattering the carefully crafted silence. "Where is this coming from?"

The child hesitated before shrugging, stuffing her hands in her pockets. Her eyes roamed the room, wanting to land anywhere except the bunch. "I don't know," she mumbled, as if suddenly trying to bury the subject. "I was just curious."

Sarah smiled, her eyes crinkling as she felt her Dad abandon his work on her hair. "That's what all my books say," Sarah responded, running a set of her fingers through her raven locks. "Is there another option?"

Clementine bit the corner of her lip, only looking at Sarah. If she made contact with any of the others, she wouldn't be able to say it. "Can they not like girls?"

The room, once more, went still.

"I've never read a book about a princess liking another princess." Sarah quipped. Clementine closed her eyes, mentally rolling them. She had a feeling this conversation wasn't going to get very far.

"I mean," Luke cleared his throat, leaning in to join the conversation and abandoning his stick and knife on the coffee table. Kenny watched said actions with a raised brow. "I don't see why they can't. Love is love."

Carlos's nose crinkled. "I don't know if I'd say they aren't supposed to." Carlos cast a side glance at Sarah to see how she was taking the information. Her brows were pressed, questioningly studying her friend to see what she was trying to get at.

"Do you think it's okay for a girl to like girls?" She paused, waiting for an answer, and then once again sputtered her mouth to life. "Or, or," she stuttered, fumbling to find a good way to begin. "Or for a boy to like boys?"

She could feel her brain slap itself. Smooth work hiding her intentions.

She could see Luke visually soften given the question, slowly understanding what she was getting at.

Kenny, on the other hand, wasn't. "Is this because of Walter and Matthew?" He pressed his lips together, abandoning his book altogether on the side table next to him. Carlos watched his movements cautiously, hands sliding from Sarah's hair to his lap.

Clementine hesitated, squinting ever-so-slightly at the statement. Suddenly, her eyes widened, spotting her scapegoat. "Uhhh yes," she began, already angry at herself for the meekness of the statement. She really did need to work on her acting. "I'm just confused, I guess."

Luke frowned, but Kenny gave a faint chuckle. "Of course it's normal. Those two love each other like nobody I've never seen."

Love, of course, wasn't what Clementine was talking about. Luke seemed to be picking up on that given her nervous shuffling. In order to avoid outing herself, she had been roped into a conversation she didn't want to have.
