A scream. Ear-piercing, blood curdling, horrifying, scream. One single one. No more, no less.
Maybe it was because before anymore could occur, they were all able to be stopped.
Luke immediately threw himself into a sitting position upon the foul sound entering the air and slapping him awake. Without a moment to spare the male was soaring out of his bed and sliding down the wooden cabin hallway. A few faces poked themselves out of their rooms, all quickly being shushed by the adult and being told to return to their slumbers.
"What's going on?" Whispered one of the voices.
Luke sighed and placed his palm against his tired, swollen eyes. Of course someone else needed to ask. This would be the fifth person he had to coax away. "It's nothing, I'm handling it. Go back to sleep, it's fine." He grumbled in irritation.
However, this voice didn't seem like they were going to give up so easily. "Oh no. I want to know what's going on."
A sudden light filled the rather dark hallway, and watching the two figures's shadows dance along the opposing wall mixed with the accent tinted voice, Luke knew exactly who it was.
He gave an exasperated sigh. Really, he didn't have time for this. "Bonnie, I'm handling it. Please just go back to bed."
"You know how curious I am. I can't be lead away that easily."
Luke rolled his eyes and continued forwards, however the small, glistening light seemed to follow him as he walked. His fists tensed. He didn't have the patience for this he couldn't stand Bonnie and her curious ways at this particular moment.
Whenever someone in their group was in trouble, was scared, was injured, was weak, Luke was always the first person to react to it. Especially if it was the little one under his care 24/7. The one he liked to say he was responsible for. The child that he had taken under his wing. The child that was "his".
His foot steps seized, as well as the light growing closer behind him. With an irritated eye roll the man turned around and took the lantern from the female's fingers. "I'm going to need this."
Bonnie placed her hands on her hips, her usual skeptical gaze filling her facial features. Normally a snappy remark would come next, but it seems that being woken up at the early hours in the morning to a loud scream can change how the group responded to things.
"Who do you think it was?"
"That's what I'm trying to figure out!" Luke snapped back. However, he did know. He knew exactly who's fragile plea for help that was. He sighed, rubbing his tired eyes in realization of his harshness. "Please, Bonnie. Go back to sleep."
There was a moment of silence before little creaks and cracks of the hardwood floor beneath moving feet sounded into the air. Bonnie could tell just off the way he had spoken that his little Clementine was the one who had shrieked. He never got THAT worried about anyone else in their group. Only ever her.
His hand quickly reached for the doorknob as he heard the red-head's door click shut. He slid into the room and waved the small lantern around, scanning and scoping for the one who he was searching for so desperately. "Clem?" He whispered.
Little whimpers and quick-paced breaths grabbed the male's attention. She was here. He knew it. Now the key was to find her.
He sauntered over to her bed, the floor groaning under him with every step. The ski lodge they had remained in wasn't in the best condition, but for the time being it was the best thing they had.
He paused once he reached the base of the child's bed. Her room was still and quiet, only the flickering of the lantern and the frightened breathing could be heard from anywhere in the room.
Yet, why couldn't he find her? Why wasn't she responding?
He paused for a moment, thoughts churning around in his mind before he knelt onto his knees and peeked under the empty bed-set.
And there she was.
Huddled into the farthest corner she could be in, the fragile little girl remained squished, hugging her legs to her chest and hiding her head from sight.
The male's heart dropped. "Clementine..." He breathed sadly. She couldn't be alone, not in a state like this. Possibly not for a while.
The tear-streaked face of the child glanced up, studying the blurred figure before her in silence.
"It's Luke, Clem. What's going on? Can you come out?" He spoke softly and gently, setting the lantern on the floor beside him as he allowed his hands to be free to gesture to her.
"No." She whispered.
"Why?" What on earth had scared her so badly that she refused to come out to the very person she had grown to trust so much? "Clem?"
"I don't want to get hurt. I can't." She pleaded, her breathing pace quickening again as her head returned itself to its hidden position.
Luke's head drooped with heartbreak. This poor little child that tried so hard to seem strong was terrified. She needed someone. She was breaking.
"You're safe, Clem. I promise. I won't let anything happen to you. You're safe here with me."
Her golden eyes glanced back towards him.
"I'll keep you safe. Nothing will touch you with me here." Carefully the male extended a hand out towards her, reaching half-way under her little hiding place. "Come on out, Clem. I'm here for you."
Her hand slowly went out towards his, flinching back several times into her chest.
"It's okay, Clem. I won't hurt you. I promise you that."
Finally, after more trial and error, the female's little hand slipped into his own squeezing it as tight.
"Okay, come here." Luke whispered, backing away to give her space to get out, gently tugging her with their locked palms. She slowly crawled her way out of the space and immediately, upon hitting fresh air, the child threw herself into the male's awaiting arms tucking her tear-stained face into his shirt.
"I got you, Clem. You're okay."
"I don't want them to get me. I need to stay alive."
"You don't want who to get you?"
"Them."
Luke frowned. She had succumbed to the fear even the adults faced in these dark days; being bitten. "That won't happen to you. Not when I'm around, I'll make sure you stay safe, okay?"
"Promise?" Her voice was soft and delicate, yet filled to the brim with horror and nerves.
"I promise you, Clem. You'll be safe as long as you're with me. I won't let anything bad happen to you."
A whimper escaped the child's lips, captured and absorbed by the older male's shirt.
"Shhh. You're okay, Clem. You're safe. Nothing's going to hurt you." The sweet nothings and reassurance continued into the night with the adult stroking her hair and speaking to her softly whenever she began to cry.
"L-Luke you aren't going to leave right? You're going to stay with me tonight?"
He gave a soft smile and nodded. "Of course, Clem. I'm going to stay right here. Making sure you're safe and warm."
The child nodded, nuzzling her face back into his shirt, hiding the old tear-stains that streaked her face. Luke wrapped his arms tightly around her, locking her in a small bubble of comfort and protection.
And like that he remained until morning light began to fill the small room. Never closing his eyes for a moment to ensure that his little girl was sleeping safely the entire night.
