Already he was two beers in, but that didn't stop him from snagging another.

"Don't hold yourself back." Jesus claimed, already popping the top off of his new bottle, passing the opener to the male at his side. "This is a cause for celebration, even if it's just a beer."

The two were celebrating the completion of ridding Richmond every walker that drenched the city. After scouring the city for weeks on horseback and on foot, they had killed and disposed of the dead lingering within. So, now that the toughest part was over, they could celebrate.

"A beer does more than enough." Javi claimed, flipping the lid off of his drink and taking a long drawl, releasing a content sigh after allowing the liquid to slip down his throat. "It's been too long since I've had one of these."

Jesus chuckled. "You think you're having only two. That's cute."

Javi raised an eyebrow, chuckling as he downed another sip. "I would gladly take any beer you can pass me."

"Then buckle in partner," Jesus stood, wandering behind their two plastic chairs and tugging forwards a single wooden crate, settling it between the two of them. "Because we have a lot of ground to cover."

Javi laughed joyfully, clapping his free hand against his bottle in disbelief. The entire crate was filled entirely with fresh, untouched bottles of beer. It was a survivor's dream come true.

"Where the hell--"

"The warehouses contain amazing things, my friend."

"You are the best." Javi claimed with a laugh, already sweeping another bottle into his hand and swinging back his open one.

In comfortable silence the two sat, both easily downing their drinks and sharing the bottle opener to crack open another.

Overlooking the city and hearing the faint sounds of sleepy life emerging from the town below sent a wave of calm over the two who had been fighting for such a sensation for weeks. It had felt like centuries; every day waking to put their lives on the line all for the safety of others. Really, they did it all for little to no thanks. They did it all for the assurance of safety, and the sensation of warmth.

Of course, now they did it for the beers.

The small lights from the town flickered before them, dancing with joy knowing that their inhabitants felt safe in their new homes. The lights, much like them, were in celebration, dancing across the rooftops and lining the quaint streets of the man made town.

"You know," Jesus's voice shattering the silence caught Javi's attention. While slightly distorted and blurry, the alcohol finally starting to kick in, he shot his companion a kind smile as he began. "If this view reminds me of anything, it's about how lonely this life we live is."

Javi's head tilted, intrigued by what exactly he had to say. Glancing to his side and noticing such, Jesus continued.

"Day in and day out we fight to keep others safe. Namely, people we love." His gaze faded, growing distant. If he had been closer, Javi might have even said he sensed a glimmer of hurt within them. "But because we fight and place our lives on the line, we're distant. Distant so that they don't feel crushed when we die."

There was a beat of silence between the two, Jesus squinting and fixating on a particular building before chugging back the rest of his beer and absentmindedly tossing the bottle beside their crate.

"I get that."

The words, breaking the newly-made tense silence, caught the interest of the male, turning his full attention to him.

Javi, downing the rest of his beer and popping open a new one, waited until he had chugged a quarter of the bottle before speaking. "You can be surrounded by people every day, including the people you love, and you still feel so damn lonely."

Jesus's gaze fixated tightly, but Javier continued.

"The worst part is that it isn't that you don't want to get close. You do, obviously. You love these people. But you can't." His gaze softened. "You can't because you don't want to get attached. Hell, you don't want them to get attached if you're doing dangerous shit all the time. You don't want them being crushed when you get killed." He sighed, eyes closing. "Because it's going to happen. It always does."

Jesus's eyes remained entirely focused on the male who seemed to completely understand what he was going through. His explanation was almost exact to the reasoning that played through his head daily.

Somehow, Javier understood him every inch of what roamed in his head. That in itself was amazing.

"Yeah," he began, voice breathy in awe. "That's exactly it."

"I get where you're coming from." Javi claimed with a shrug, pausing from chugging back his beer to respond. "It's a shitty feeling. Every day is nags you."

"Loneliness is a killer." Jesus claimed, sighed in understanding as his gaze returned to the city before them, to the very location that was causing his dilemma in the first place. "But the only cure is to keep fighting."

He could feel Javi's eyes rest on the side of his head, but refused to tear his gaze from the landscape.

"You can't give up just because of those nagging thoughts in your head. Even if it sucks, it's best for everyone around you." His gaze switched down to his bottle. "At the end of the day, you're keeping them safe. You're keeping everyone safe."

Silence lifted once more, for the third time since their binge drinking had begun. This time however, it wasn't tense or filled with the chugging of bitter liquid. It was calm and filled with understanding. It was a silence of mutual respect for the now shared thoughts lingering in the air between them.

"You know Jesus, you're a pretty great guy." Javi's speech, now growing slightly slurred, furthered as he extended a hand out towards the male. "We should go out sometime."

Jesus's eyes widened, for a moment debating if he misheard or misinterpreted the statement Javier was offering. As he continued, it became clear.

"The loneliest of people make the best partners, after all."

Jesus keeps his eyes locked on the male, intently staring him and studying the concept he was proposing. Javi was, after all, far more intoxicated than he was. Yet judging by the tender smile he wore and the kind hand still being offered to him, he assumed the question was genuine.

Swiftly, he slipped his hand into his own. "I'll take you up on that."

Javi laughed, giving the hand a tender squeeze. "Good, 'cause it would have been embarrassing if you turned down our second date."

"Second?"

"Is this not our first?"

Jesus, smirk fading onto his features, chuckled. He leaned back in his chair to continue sipping his beer. "Well, I wouldn't turn it down for the world."

There the two remained, sipping contently on their beers until sunrise, occasionally breaking the breathtaking view to chatter about this-or-that.

The entire time, hand in hand.
