"Oh no."

Marlon and Louis detached their gaze from the new girl they were admiring — Clementine — to see what Violet's panic was about. Louis, in specific, raised a challenging eyebrow. "What?"

Violet scrunched her nose, her arms already crossed. "I know what that look means."

Marlon and Louis glanced at each other, silently exchanging whispers of confusion, before turning back. "Elaborate?" Louis challenged.

"You like her." Violet sighed, hands flapping dejectedly at her sides. "Both of you like Clem--"

Louis snapped forward, planting his hand on the blonde's mouth. Even though Clementine was halfway across the courtyard, well out of earshot, he didn't want to risk her hearing. "Can you maybe keep it down?" He whisper-yelled.

Violet shot a glare at the male, swatting his hand away and using it to smack himself on the cheek. Louis and Violet were two of the few who stayed at Ericson when the apocalypse began. Because of their choice, the two had grown close to one another. Close enough that they could pick on and tease one another without either caring.

Normally, Louis found it to be wonderful. On days like these, not so much.

"You know what this means, right?" Seeing neither of them respond, both standing dumbfounded, she rolled her eyes. Boys. "Only one of you can date her."

Slowly, Louis and Marlon turned to one another, drinking in the others' expression. Violet was right, and they both knew it. But it didn't mean either one of them was going to settle.

"What should we do then?" Marlon asked, hands planted on is hips.

She shrugged. "You're just going to need to find out who she likes more."

"How do we do that?"

Violet smirked. "Louis already has a head start."

Whipping around, Marlon spotted Louis approaching Clementine in the courtyard. She was watching AJ play with a half-deflated ball on the basketball court while she sat off to the side, picking at a discarded book she found in the library. Louis sat down beside her wearing a grin as bright as the sun, chatting about the book between her palms.

Marlon's gaze squinted. "That bastard." Vi, catching his whisper, raised an eyebrow. It seemed like she had just helped them start a war.

This was going to be fun.

The next morning, Violet woke up to Clementine in the kitchen. She was on cooking duty that day, making a batch of oatmeal for the school to have for breakfast. AJ sat to the right of the door, a magazine in his hands as he audibly practised his reading.

Violet's gaze tore when she felt a breeze at her side, and found Marlon walking by. He gave her a nod to which she reciprocated. Watching him glance into the kitchen and stop in his tracks, however, made her actually grin.

Marlon froze entirely, and Clementine didn't even notice.

Violet, glancing between the two, rolled her eyes. "Offer to help her." She whispered.

Marlon turned to her, an eyebrow raised skeptically. Rolling her eyes, deciding she would lend him a helping hand, Vi shoved him into the room and turned away.

Clementine glanced up, furrowing her brows and smirking as the blonde tumbled into the room. She was thankful that she and Marlon — and the rest of the school for that matter — were comfortable enough to crack jokes about each other, and that was exactly what she was going to do. "Hey klutz."

Marlon scoffed. "The doorstep's slanted."

It wasn't, but Clementine didn't care to comment.

"I actually came to ask if you wanted some help."

Clementine raised an eyebrow, smiling tauntingly. "I don't know. You gotta have steady hands to mix this oatmeal." Marlon rolled his eyes, sliding forward and placing his hand over hers.

She smiled thankfully at him, their eyes meshing sweetly for an instant, before her hand slipped from under his. "I'll get the bowls and cutlery." She hushed. Marlon smiled as she did so, turning himself so he could watch her. With Clementine around, chores didn't feel like chores. They were enjoyable. They were different.

Amidst their chatter, the two finished up the meal preparation and organization. All that was left to do was cart everything outside.

"I'll go make sure the tables are cleared off." Clementine called, wiping her hands on her apron before tossing it on the hook to the left of the door. "Do you mind coming to help, Marlon?" She asked, pausing before the door frame.

Marlon smirked. "What? With me and my clumsy hands?"

Clementine scoffed and rolled her eyes. She had to admit, their play-teasing was extremely enjoyable. "Just come on."

As Marlon trotted out after her, he turned to continue their conversation when he froze, his mouth hanging limp. Clementine's gaze, awestruck, was fixated on something to her side. Turning, his heart frozen, Marlon's brows curled.

Louis was sitting beside AJ, helping him work through the magazine he was practising his reading with. Glancing up, he smirked at the two of them. He seemed 'surprised' he'd been caught. "Oh, hey."

Marlon shot a glare at the teen behind Clem's back as she crouched down to AJ, peaking at how far he'd gotten. "Wow, you guys are really covering some ground here."

"He's a quick learner." Louis claimed with a smile.

Tenderly, Clem smiled back.

From the end of the hall, watching the scene unfold, all Violet could do was smirk. To say the battle was getting interesting was an understatement.

Finally, the next evening, everything came to a head.

For the entirety of the next day, Violet watched as Marlon snuck flowers in front of Clem's door only for her to assume AJ brought them. She saw Louis goofing off with AJ, only to leave to fetch water the moment Clementine came outside, missing the whole show.

Their efforts were not being met with the slightest bit of favouritism or affection, and finally, Louis and Marlon snapped.

Marlon flashed a cheeky smirk Clementine's way during a game of war. She made a comment about the weirdness of his mullet, and when Marlon retorted that Louis' hair was even more ridiculous, all Clem could do was smirk.

"Marlon?" Louis asked. He jerked his head to the side, silently asking to speak with him in private. When all Marlon did was blankly stare back, Louis groaned and thrust himself to his feet, snagging the blonde's arm and dragging him away by force.

After they were out of earshot, watching the two begin their couples quarrel on the other side of the courtyard, Violet chuckled and leaned in toward Clem. "So, you've got some admirers, huh?" Vi questioned.

Clementine raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "What?"

Violet's brow matched hers. "Marlon and Louis? They both clearly like you." Clementine's brows shot up, eyes widening in horror. Violet scoffed. "Is this news to you? They've been flirting with you all week."

Clementine turned, studying the two aggressively chatting a few feet away. "That was them flirting?"

Violet froze, her face dumbfounded by the girl's obliviousness.

Somehow, this made their war a hell of a lot more entertaining.
