"I think you should tell her." Such a simple statement and yet it shook Kenny to his core.
His dark and shadowed eyes glanced up to meet the golden orbs of the young female sitting across from him on the couch. Her curious gaze would dart between him and a figure off on the opposite end of the room, her attention flickering on who to pay most attention to; the speaker, or his focus?
"Really?"
She nodded. "It's for the best." A hesitant silence filled the air around them before being broken by a small sigh from the girl. "She needs to know. This can't be hidden from her for forever."
"I'll postpone it at least as long as I can." He shot back, his gaze how faltering from hesitant to irritated.
Clementine flinched at the gaze, standing down and sliding an inch farther away from him against the cool leather couch. "I just think she needs to hear about what happened to you."
Kenny scoffed, adjusting the way he sat so he could face the fire instead of the girl fixating his gaze on the flames. "I'd rather avoid talking about that."
"I think we all would."
Kenny flinched as if her words had physically smacked him across the cheek. Dammit. There she was again with her wordplay. She always had a way to make the best points and influences feel like the wort decisions.
"The point is that we still need to talk about it and considering that you two love each other she deserves to know what happened to you." Clementine fought back the words 'and your family' and instead let a strangled groan escape her sealed lips. He didn't have a family; at least not a blood-related one anyway. They were all slain, abandoned, and scattered around the States.
Silence fell into the air again as the older male continued to study the fire dancing before them. He couldn't help but wonder how close he needed to get before they swallowed him whole and sucked him away from this dilemma.
A sigh finally worked its way into the chilled night air. "Fine. I'll go." The adult shifted his feet off of the coffee table they had previously been resting on and attached themselves to the floor. He glanced towards the girl, who has now grown to feel like a daughter to him, and watched as she gave him two thumbs up and an encouraging nod. With two of his soiled fingers he tapped the bill of her cap, smiling his classic grin before starting away. Not of course before hearing a giggle escape the playful child's lips.
"Sarita," He breathed as he drew closer to his lover. The woman turned towards her love, smiling kindly and setting down the notebook that she was jotting in and wandered to meet him halfway. "What are you working on?" Stalling. Something he was hoping to do for the next small while before he slammed down his life on her life a ton of bricks.
She smiled, her sweet accent filling the air around them as she began to speak. "Taking inventory. Luke suggested that I do it to see if we have enough food for everyone. Or at least to see when we need to go find more."
He raised an eyebrow. "We have tons of grub."
"Not for much longer with these many mouths to feed." She smirked, pushing the notebook to the corner of the table. "Anyways, what are you up to?" Her eyes drifted towards the child resting in front of the fire, smiling as she watched the flames fly against the wooden logs. "How is Clementine?"
Kenny smirked, turning to follow her gaze. Despite the horrors she had seen she was still able to keep the innocent gaze that kept her childlikeness alive. That was the only smile she ever gave and only did so when she thought nobody was looking. She was determined that she needed to be strong for everyone, but somehow she didn't include herself in that plan.
"She's doing good." He finally whispered. "Listen, I need to tell you something important."
Her gaze fell. Those words were spoken so often and frequently in this world she should be getting used to hearing them, and yet still every time they entered the air she could feel her stomach drop. "Of course, what is it?"
Kenny placed a hand on her back, gently guiding down to sit at the table nearby that they dined on every night. "Uhm..." He rubbed the back of his neck, eyes closed and head lowered. "I uh," Groan.
Clementine glanced away from the fire and over towards the two, her smile fading as she watched the male struggle with his words.
"I think that it's only right for you to know...what happened. What happened to me before I came here. Before I met you." Lots of pauses, Clem noticed, as he attempted to gather his thoughts.
Sarita nodded. "Okay, go on."
Kenny grumbled. Why was she so okay with this? Couldn't she object? Assure him that she was busy and couldn't talk now? Tell him that she didn't want to hear it? But no, she was too kind and sincere. He was her priority, and this would be the only moment that he hated that.
"I uh." A deep gulp. "I had someone else before you." Hesitating silence fell, Clementine could almost sense the tension in the air. "She was my wife; Katjaa. We had a son together," he chuckled. "Little ol' Duck." Even saying his name pained his heart.
"What happened to them, Kenny?" He hadn't noticed he had paused, staring solemnly out the window until she snapped him out of his gaze.
He blinked. Right, he needed to explain. He closed his eyes, wanting to get this over with as soon as possible. "Duck was bitten. We had let the infection sit until we knew we needed to...you know." He could feel the tears gathering up on his eyes as he gestured with his head to better describe without saying the words. "My pal Lee shot him for me. I couldn't bring myself to do that." He lowered his head and sighed. "But Katjaa...."
She placed a hand against his shoulder as his voice wavered, silently coaching him to go on.
"She uh...She took the gun and uh...Used it on herself." He closed his eyes, using his dirty fingers to rub his aching temples. "God I miss 'em."
Sarita nodded, patting his back sweetly. "But, why are you telling me this? Why now?"
Kenny turned to meet her gaze, glancing away again after a brief second. "I...I just felt you needed to know how much I love them. And miss them." He shook his head. He would never be able to stop. He does love Sarita, but Katjaa would always be his sweetheart.
Clementine frowned, glancing away and back towards the fire. She could only hope that Sarita wasn't going to add fuel to the fire that Kenny already had in his heart.
"Do you...do you still love her?"
Silence fell. "Katjaa?"
"Of course." She replied with a small nod. "Are you...over her?"
"I don't think I'll ever be." He answered quickly and truthfully. He was fearing she would ask, and he knew that he needed to give the honest answer. No way was he going to lie to her.
"So then, what do you feel about me? What am I to you?"
A tense silence once again fell over the group, Clementine's eyes squeezed shut, begging for them not to continue. She didn't want to see Kenny crack or Sarita yell or a fight escalate.
"Well maybe you need to figure that out." She stated softly, sounding seemingly disappointed.
And then she was gone, leaving Kenny only to his thoughts; all about who he loved lost.
