"Where is she?!"
Hearing Luke's demanding voice boom through the cabin, Kenny jumped quickly followed by a sigh. They had been staying in the ski lodge for a while now, and now that his group had finally warmed up to Kenny's, Luke had grown accustomed to demanding answers. Normally with people who were strangers he wouldn't dream of such a thing, but they were all living together now. It needed to be done. Especially regarding baby Clementine.
They had found her all alone and abandoned one day while the cabin group was on their way to finding a new place to stay, and it was immediately agreed upon to help the poor child.
"She's upstairs. Sleeping. And you're yelling, slamming, and stomping isn't helping." He grumbled, turning to the next page in the novel he had picked up off one of the nearby bookshelves. "It took us forever to get her to take her nap. We should just let her--"
A sudden strangled cry from upstairs caused Luke's head to snap to attention.
Clementine.
Luke was beginning to have a sixth sense for taking care of this child. The entire trek there Luke refused to let go of her, and he was the person who would feed her, rock her to sleep, and hum to her. He treated her as if she was his own.
Sarita's figure appeared at the top of the staircase, rubbing her eyes with a hand against her forehead. "She's not sleeping anymore."
Kenny snarled. "It took us forever to get her to sleep."
"At least now I can check in and see how she is without disturbing her." Luke commented with a grin, dashing up the stairs and brushing past Sarita along the way. He always did this in such an urgent matter, checking in on the infant was his favourite thing to do.
Sarita tiredly trudged down the wooden steps, and threw herself against the couch next to her love. "He sure does care for that little girl, doesn't he?"
Kenny gave a half smirk at the comment. "You kidding? He adores her. He hardly ever leaves her alone."
"It's apparent. He only went to go collect firewood for 20 minutes and he's already in a panic about how she's doing."
"Something about that little girl is soothing. I can't put my finger on it myself, but she's a sweetheart that's for sure." Turning towards his girl, Kenny placed a sweet kiss against her cold cheek and returned to reading his novel, while Sarita's head fell and nestled into a comfortable position against his shoulder. "Clementine..." Kenny breathed with a gentle chuckle. Even for such a young one she was still the star of their little group.
As Luke poked his head into the child's room, he couldn't help but grin sweetly. "There she is..." He breathed quietly, walking up to the squirming child.
As her eyes rested against the male looming over her, her sobbing halted and instead she waved her arms up at the male to be lifted.
Just like how Luke was attached the Clem, she was the same way with him. Whenever someone couldn't figure out what she wanted, Luke would take her into his arms and he immediately knew. They knew each other so well, and they had only been together for such a short amount of time.
A small chuckle escaped the male's lips as he dipped his hands under her body, tearing her away from the pink fabric that rested underneath her. "There's my girl. How you doing?" Using one of his fingers he sweetly caressed her cheek, causing the baby to gurgle with glee. "What a sweetie you are, huh?"
Over time, the brunette gave a small frown as he studied the little girl's face, watching as she smiling up at her guardian in that childlike innocent way she had. She was only a baby, but he knew that she wouldn't be that way for long.
Instead of going to school, she would need to learn from her surroundings. Instead of being with kids her own age she needed to learn how to wield a gun. Instead of spending time with the people that she loves, she would need to watch them all get killed in cold blood. This wasn't a world he wanted his little Clementine to grow up in. His innocent little girl wouldn't be innocent for much longer.
"Oh Clem," He breathed. "Don't grow up. I'll keep you nice and safe, right here." Taking a seat against a small wooden chair at the other end of the room, he rocked the child in his arms, hoping to allow her to get some more sleep that he had caused her to miss.
"You can stay right here with me. I'll keep you warm, I'll keep you safe. I won't let anything happen to you, Clementine." His eyes shifted towards her crib at the far corner of the room. "It's a harsh world out there, Clem. People are going to try and hurt you, even to kill you. But you need to stay strong. You need to keep your head." Listening to himself speak sent bullets into his chest. He was warning a baby about what the world wood be like for her in the future. It wasn't a world any of them wanted to be in, and yet, he was pushing her into it.
"But I'll protect you, Clem. I'm not letting anyone hurt you or corrupt you. You're my little girl, and I swear..." He glanced down at the baby girl with a sweet smile against his features. "I won't leave you alone."
Clementine's eyes faded shut, one of her tiny hands clutching tightly to one of his fingers, wrapped completely and firmly around. Her hands were so small, so delicate. She needed to be protected at all costs.
She was his sweet darling Clementine.
And with him, she was safe from all harm.
