It was a rare feat for Jane to panic, but today was the day she did. In a frenzy, the dirty-blonde leapt from room to room, searching urgently for any sign of the child or baby she always had by her side. The three had made it back to the warehouse a mere week earlier and were still getting accustomed to the size and stock of the location. Thanks to this, there were periods of the day when Jane wouldn't know where either of the two kids were. Normally, she stumbled across them in a matter of minutes, either wandering the lot or rummaging through warehouse stock.
But today was different. Today, they'd been missing for well over an hour, and there wasn't sign of them anywhere.
The woman threw herself into an office frantically. "Clementine?" Her voice was breathy and urgent, searching for any sign of life. With no sound of human life, only of the open window's wind rustling through curtain fabric, Jane's panic only heightened.
Just as she went to tear from the room to continue her search, she heard a gurgle. A familiar gurgle.
"AJ you goofball," a voice answered. A familiar voice.
Rushing to the window, jetting her head out, Jane searched the parking lot below her for any sign of the duo but still, she saw nothing. Only vacant pavement and garbage rustling in the late-evening wind.
"Jane?"
The adult swivelled in horror, hearing the voice coming from above her. Adjusting herself, craning her neck, Jane spotted Clementine's head looming from the rooftop, turning quizzically at her panicked gaze. "Clementine!" Jane breathed, relief flooding her body. "Thank God,"
Clementine pressed the left corners of her lips together, questioning her caretaker's mental state given her frazzled posture. "Are you okay?"
Jane sighed. "Now, yes." She allowed her shoulders to sag, her gaze falling back to the parking lot. After a moment, she cast her gaze back to the children so they could hear her. "I'll be up there in a second."
Jane removed herself from the window, making her way toward the staircase leading to the warehouse's rooftop. It felt odd, she realized, as she slammed the metal door shut behind her. The last time she had paid that roof any mind was during their escape, fleeing from hoards of Carver's henchmen shooting at them.
Upon arriving, Jane's skin was flooding in a deep pink lighting. Turning, she spotted the two kids, AJ in Clem's lap, staring off at the sunset, watching the sky burn orange, the pink fading, the horizon glimmering in purple potential.
"Wow," Jane breathed, slowly making her way to the kids. "This is gorgeous."
"We haven't had a nice sunset in so long," Clementine began, shifting AJ in her lap, adjusting her seat so Jane could slip beside her. "I decided to bring AJ out to watch."
Glancing down at the toddler's face, Jane was met with wide, glistening eyes. The child's bottom lip puffed out, his jaw slightly open, admiring the array of colours. She smirked. "I think he's enjoying it."
Clementine smiled, turning to catch a brief gaze of the woman's face. "We both are."
The three sank to silence, drinking in the luscious sight, admiring every fade from one shade of orange to a deep red. The sky burned for them, and they greedily took in its warmth.
