Gabe would forever remember that day horrifyingly well. He didn't think he'd ever forget it.

When everything went to hell in Richmond, Gabe remembered the terrifying panic that swept over him and Javi realizing Clementine was missing. Javi, Kate, and Gabe had all reunited safely, but Clementine? She'd left to try to track down Kate when Javi left to fetch Gabe. Unlike Javi, Clementine never came back.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing," Kate answered breathlessly, skidding to a halt in front of Javier. "I don't know where she could be. I never ran into her when she left to find me."

"Shit," Gabe groaned, latching his hands to his hat and squeezing. The longer Clementine was gone, the larger his fear grew, the bigger the thought that something bad happened to her began overwhelming him. "We need to find her," he said, the hands to his head tightening. "We need to."

"Let's split up," Javi said, whipping around to face the two from where he'd been frantically scanning the area. "Search everywhere. Every back alley and hiding spot. We'll search inside the buildings after."

No one said anything further. They all obeyed and turned their separate ways.

They searched everywhere they could. Javier searched every back alley. Kate made her way to the Richmond playground to scout for signs of trouble. Gabe searched between buildings, near crevices by back doors, by dumpsters, behind garbage bins, anywhere that seemed small enough that someone could hide from looming danger.

He was panting — panicked, frantic, heavy breathing, groaning and whining each time a new spot turned up empty. There were fewer and fewer places for her to hide. The chance of being gone, or hurt, or killed was growing greater by each passing second.

Then, rounding a corner, he spotted something. Someone. In one of the back alleys in a cluster of buildings, by dumpsters and garbage bins and discarded boxes, sat a girl. Propped up against the wall, pale as could be, sat Clementine — clothes tattered, skin bruised, and hat falling even further apart.

Gabe could feel is stomach drop as every cell in his body tensed and screamed simultaneously — wailing in terror and begging for silence at the same time.

"Clem!" Gabe wailed. He could hardly catch his breath and steady his feet as he lunged forward. His brain was whirling, and his feet were moving before his thoughts could catch up to them. All he could do was run to her, but all his brain could think was that it was Clem, that Clem was hurt, and that Clem was alone.

His ears were ringing as he slammed down on his knees, his clammy hands brushing away the hair clinging to her cheeks. He couldn't feel the burning of his knees' fresh wounds, and could hardly hear Kate and Javi clamouring up behind him. His brain was too loud. His brain was yelling.

'She's passed out. She's pale. She's sick.'

"Clem?" Gabe asked again, his voice muffled in his own head. His hands settled on her cheeks, searching for some hint of warmth, a sign of life, searching for something hidden beneath her skin that could convince him she was still there. "Clem, please."

"Move," Javier said, sliding beside Gabe and hunching over the girl. He felt her temperature, checked her pulse, then examined exposed skin. Something felt off. She was there, she was alive, but at the same time she wasn't. She was gone. Missing. Somewhere else. "This isn't right." He said, brows furrowing. "Something's wrong."
